I'm from Belgium and ever since I was little I've wanted to be a writer. When I went to see Far From the Madding Crowd, I was blown away by his talent and his English accent, and at that moment I said to myself: 'If you really want something, you can do it, and it doesn't matter how small your country is.' Everyone keeps talking about Marion Cotillard and I keep thinking, what about our boy Schoenaerts? Don't get me wrong, Cotillard is a brilliant actress but it's great to see underrated actors like Matthias Schoenaerts getting the opportunity to work with critically acclaimed directors like Jacques Audiard. That's easy. First off, he doesn't have a "weird French accent" because he is not French, but a Flemish Belgian. So his native tongue is Flemish (variant of the Dutch language, spoken in Flanders, Nothern half of Belgium (Southern half is Walloon, French dialect). Secondly, Flemish people are usually good with other languages. Most of us are good/fluent in 3 languages minimum. Thirdly, we don't dub foreign TV series/films, but subtitle them. So we soak up foreign languages pretty fast.

Glad to see Marion is more at ease with English to express what's on her mind and let her personality shine through. Big different from those interviews she did in the U.S. right after winning the Oscar, even though I understand that she's still uncomfortable at times for not finding the right words. Anyone who learns to speak another language knows it's a big achievement to get that far as being that fluent for interviews.

Rust and Bone will stand the test of time .. splendid acting perfs by both leads, master-class filmmaking, great, great soundtrack.. But Matthias stood out for me. Not at all.. They were joking at the beginning and during the interview.. If anything, one could say that she is a little bit apprehensive because the interview is in English and she is the less fluent of the two. But her English is improving a lot. Also, if Marion wouldn't get along with Matthias, then why would she has worked again with him in the upcomming "Blood Ties" directed by her husband? Too bad this movie won't get a full US release, so a bad remake looks imminent in a few years time..

I admire and am a fan of both of these incredibly talented actors. French and European films embody and deliver a message and quality of acting that Hollywood movies lack. The interviewer is terribly simplistic and it is painful to hear his weak questions to both actors. I would have asked much more intense and intelligent and witty questions to engage both actors. This is painful to watch and you can tell by the facial expressions of both actors, how uncomfortable they were at times with the inconsequential and lame questions they were asked. Aside from that, I admire and enjoyed watching both of these actors in Rust and Bone, as well as other films they've participated in.

What? This interviewer is very good. If you watch his other interviews they are very in-depth and that is why they are so long, obviously. I think Marion was a little nervous because in the beginning, the interviewer could tell and he said, "Ok, this is basically just a chat, so feel free to [joke around (basically)]." Usually he never says that. And it's very hard to give good interviews. His questions are meant to start some conversation that bleeds into other topics, not be a direct Q&A.

in Flanders we speak dutch, and dutch is the closest language to english, so i'm guessing he just took some lessons to improve his pronunciation, but people speak english quite well in the dutch linguistic region... his french is better than his english though, imho
