Sorry its late, but another one I'm proud of, hope you guys liked my take on DP- in the Digimon Card Game. Learned a lot from the last one and hope to keep getting feedback to make these better and better. What mechanic do you want to see covered next?

It does rub me the wrong way that Yellow has access to the two most unstoppable removal types: -DP and adding a card to security. Both have very little counterplay outside of effect immunity, and even that doesn't help against lingering -DP effects like Megalo Spark. I think -DP will continue to get more valuable as more powerful boss monsters with conventional protection pop up, just as how normal deletion has become less valuable because of how common protection is, along with triggering on deletion effects.

Consider the following: Red is the best color at checking security. It can trash security as well as negate option effects with ease. Isn't it unfair that they get to do both? It doesn't just have no counterplay, it's actually removing counterplay. Should that change? No, SECntrl is already a problem as it is. Colors have specialities. This is good. You want them to have this. When everybody does something and color identity starts to dissapear card games start to degenerate fast. Yellow is the best at removing threats from the board. It's white in Magic. You may be indestructible, but exile cares not about that. Yellow compliments this ability to deal with threats with recovery, becoming a very resilient color. You know what wouldn't be ok? If this was combined with being the best color for OTK comboes, like Red has always been or purple is starting to become. If a deck can negate all your progress and deal with your set up and then it can also blow you away in one turn it'd be incredibly frustrating. But that's not what yellow does (with the exception of Shinegreymon, if you want to lump it with yellow). Yellow has very little access to sec+ or unsuspend. Not inexistent, but it's usually limited and conditional. Because that's not something Yellow does. Yellow endures and fights an attrition war. Or sometimes makes a zoo, but it's been long since yellow recieved support to its zoo strategy. Yeah, not every deck can protect itself against yellow options. But all decks can instead build in the nursery or set up memory for a bigger turn later, without having to worry about getting killed from 4 security out of nowhere. That makes it quite fair. And it also is good color identity design. What do you expect from Yellow? Recovery and alternative removal tools that bypasses most protection. You know what it can do, you know what it can't do, and can therefore play accordingly.

Heaven's Judgement has become one of my favorite cards. Greymon and its protection can burn in hellfire.

Funny to hear you talk about "funky state effects" from my perspective as a Magic The Gathering player originally, because this is all very standard for how power and toughness work in MTG, but I guess most Digimon players started off in Yugioh, which does not work at all the same. Also this goes to galaxy brain meme for digimon Lvl1 - DP doesn't matter Lvl2 - DP is everything Lvl3 - DP doesn't matter All digimon do the same checks regardless of DP, there's no break points and it's just a matter of whether or not you WANT to keep your digimon around that impacts whether you attack. That's why bagra army is so interesting and why despite being annoying, yellow vaccine and other yellow control strategies will never be the pinnacle of digimon power without having an actual game winning gimmick to go along with it (such as board flooding or strong protection in the cases of lord knight, nume, and armor decks). The DP manipulation is just icing on the cake.

OK there is a very specific reason why it seems funky and that is because you don’t think of power as a “health stat” , in Magic the gathering your creatures don’t die if they have zero attack And in Digimon if your weaker Digimon attacks into a bigger digimon The bigger Digimon doesn’t lose DP like who magic the gathering creatures lose health

@empireyouth5791 I'm not sure what your point is. 0 DP functions almost exactly the same as 0 Toughness in terms of processing when and how a creature/digimon leaves play. It's not funky if you played MTG, the principle is the same. It is funky if you played Yugioh, the principle is not the same. You've just poorly explained how power is a separate stat, but ignored how the most common ways to increase or decrease toughness via an effect in MTG tends to also impact the power since most effects give +X/+X or -X/-X. All of which means that the funkiness is pretty much dependent on whether or not you were a yugioh or MTG player first. Which, you know, was exactly what I said.

@@deucemoose7852 I don’t know , DP and toughness seem very different…. if a creature attacks another creature in magic the gathering so long as their attack is not zero they lose toughness, but in digimon they don’t lose DP , You can put a creature with zero toughness onto the field but you can’t with digimon , digimon attack with their DP, creatures attack with their power not their Toughness, Also I don’t think my example is intrinsically poor , Power and toughness is separate and I know for a fact there are effects that increase power but not toughness or decreased power without decreasing toughness. Sir you can argue it’s a not to relevant example but it’s an example nonetheless I would be the equivalent of saying “ there are no black geese because geese aren’t black” also finally A new digimon a player at my locals was confused about DP During shine gray primer and when we explain it to him his response was “ I thought DP was power not toughness, wait can I decrease the DP by attacking a bigger Digimon with a smaller one”…. I am guessing you can guess what card game they played primarily And honestly I think this is a fair question to ask if you’re coming from magic the gathering so it even confused someone from magic the gathering. again there was literally nothing hostile about my comment I’m just explaining the confusion is simply more than just “ A particular group from ONE card game being confused” in fact I am glad you were one of the few that weren’t confused by it and I am pretty happy about the Is eas you adopted, You are clearly a very flexible person

@@empireyouth5791 Creature combat in Magic does not reduce toughness. It just marks damage on the creature. Sure, it lets you combine multiple damage effects to kill something (digimon doesn't have damage spells, so there's no equivalent), but if a 5/5 and a 3/3 fight, you still can't kill the 5/5 with a card that says 'Destroy target creature with two or less toughness'. This carries over to Digimon pretty well. Toughness does not change in those situations. If someone thought that attacking into a Digimon reduced its DP, they weren't wrong because they had played Magic - they were ALSO WRONG in Magic. The main confusion I think comes from the fact that DP is toughness AND power at once. It tells you how strong something is AND how much it takes to kill it. Therefore, coming from any game with split P/T will cause some weird assumptions to be made. It also doesn't help that the other big one - YuGiOh - also has two stats, but they're both power and toughness at once, like DP, but they depend on if the monster is in Attack or Defense position, a thing that doesn't translate either. Basically, there are assumptions people can carry over from both MtG and YGO, but the person making the assumption you mentioned wasn't making it because it was Magic's 'fault', because they'd also be wrong in Magic.

I started playing in BT13. The first deck I built was Yellow Vaccine. I stuck with the Patamon line and angles. Did tech in two ShadowSeraphimon as well. I love DP reduction. It’s by far my favorite mechanic. It’s fair-ish. As for Judgment, instead of limiting or banning it, I think an errata would be better, “you can active this effect up to three times” which is basically the first activation and then if you have a duel color Digimon. Judgement’s probably is power creep of other Digimon giving it a huge buff. Three color Digimon seems like a real slippery slope in terms of game design. It’s going to limit the cards that can be printed.

I think DP reduction is important, although i feel like some cards are stating to reduce to much DP, especially for their price. (Heavens judgement especially)

its a weird one, its a necessity for decks like fanglong and tyrantkabuterimon running around immune to digimon effects, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised to see it get limited at some point

As an amature designer and newcomer to Digimon, -DP seems so important to keep the game emphasis on scaling up to larger digimon, rather than rushing out go wide boards, since while -dp is effective against larger mons, you still have to spend resources to remove the larger mons via an attack. Having played a lot of other games, its really intresting how this makes boss monsters still very useful without needing "I win" written on the card, I think shine greymon is like, a card that could see a ban in the future, especially if the game slows down and as boss cards get increasingly powerful due to its nature as a floodgate, but making sure like go wide isnt too powerful in this game, having aoe deletion vs -DP, id rather have -DP be strong and come into the game later rather than for "Dark Hole" effects becoming soft required vs go wide, esp going second. I need to play the game more but, yeah game cool. Getting over "towers" (effect immune/destruction immune) is like something -DP maybe shouldnt also do but considering how much setup big -DP tends to be Im not overly concered unless -DP becomes a lot faster, future reality where more immunity to -DP means that maybe like, a future core rule of lvl 4 and higher digimon cannot be deleted by -DP effects may be useful, unclear.

This is a great video. I always wondered whether I can degenerate my Corona into Sunmon, then go straight into Lunamon without the egg deleting itself off the field. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

And if bringing up a video isn't an option at the time, 11-3-3 and 11-3-1 from the comprehensive rules should be all you need to cite, alongside maybe 3-5-2 if the opponent is being particularly stubborn.

Terry single handedly got me into yellow because Dp minus is so cool. Nothing beats the feeling of clearing wide boards. Ill take DP minus over Recovery +1 any day.

Eh, game has gotten out of hand imo They started printing busted cards immune to destruction, so they amped up soft removal (dedigivolve and dp-). Now effects that delete outright are pretty bad. Then things like fanglong show up and you MUST have options or you can't touch em. So now even digimon based removal is powercrept. THEN things like belphemon sleep mode and magnamon x come around and you literally can't interact with them. You sit there knowing there's nothing you can do and exactly how the game will play out barring EXTREME security luck (and that's only if you have bomb, and since decks are so fuckin fast now you can't afford to play bombs lest they kill you by turn 2/3.) And now everything can avoid leaving the field by effects so the only thing that stops them is dp-; a mechanic almost exclusive to A SINGLE COLOR in the entire game. Nah, this shit is AIDS. Really contemplating bouncing. I hear flesh and blood is good, and star wars just got its own new game. Very sad state of affairs, used to love this game. Edit: I guess you can dedigivolve also, but that is infinitely worse than outright destroying something with dp-.

​@@KnTElixaragreed; unless tyrant is fun and able to effectively mitigate the turbo aids that will be yellow vacc/armors i think I'm sitting it out. People shit on things like Yugioh for the handtrap thing but at least I feel like I have a chance with a well dropped nib/ash; against the most oppressive decks in digimon there IS NO counterplay. You know exactly how the game will go 9/10 times and I fuckin hate it.

I mean this is near any card game. Fanglong is fine because honestly It requires more luck to get him. The searchability is LOW. Even when my buddy has 4 in deck it's less than half the time he can get it out. He usually gets his Devas out and swings like crazy. Leviamon is absolutely STOOPID. Unless you can stop the line from creeping up (which is most times impossible), LEvia X comes out so quickly and for very little cost comparative to the crazy output he has. The only deck that stands a viable chance against is my D-Reaper deck and I made that for fun. But if you think "new" card games won't power creep eventually, you best never play card games again.

Edit: no one was saying fanglong is even a good deck or isnt, simply that fanglongmon, the card, is impossible to interact with outside of options and this is a FACT. It's consistency or lack thereof is not the point, the text on the card is. You're conflating your personal feelings and biases toward/against the card/deck in a context where neither of them mean shit. My statement was that protection effects are getting stronger and pointed to fanglongmon as an example; this is a fact. However you feel about the fairness of such a card is your own personal opinion, but doesn't change how strong the protection on it is.
