A crackling headset mic is typically caused by a poor cable connection. Many headset microphones have replaceable cables. Quality manufacturers such as DPA often have generous warranties as well. If you are using the headset with a wireless system RF interference or poor signal could also cause unpleasant audio artifacts. If you have a 4066 or 4088 (the metal ear hook versions) it's 2 year warranty, void if you tried to push the cable into those little clips along the headset (that's only for the boom)... And the cable is the same piece as the mic (on those specific models, not the 4166, 4266, 4188, 4288) so it's a ~$500 replacement. A good reason to avoid the 40 series DPAs and try the newer modular ones or a different brand.

I realized I got crackle from the mic rubbing my cheek. Check if it's a low end crackle (cable) or high end (cheek rub).
