The centrepiece of the new model series is the newly developed four-cylinder flat engine with turbocharging. The 718 Boxster develops 220 kW (300 hp, 718 Boxster: Combined fuel consumption: 7.4 - 6.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions: 168 - 158 g/km) of power from two litres of engine displacement, while the 718 Boxster S attains 257 kW (350 hp, 718 Boxster S: Combined fuel consumption 8.1 - 7.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions: 184 - 167 g/km) from 2.5 litres of displacement. In the S-model, Porsche also uses a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. In fact Porsche is now the only manufacturer to offer VTG technology in production cars with petrol-driven engines, both in the 911 Turbo and in the 718 Boxster S. Impressive here are the considerable power gain of 26 kW (35 hp) compared to the previous Boxster models and the efficiency of the new turbo engines. The new 718 Boxster models have fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent.
The completely new chassis tuning and stronger brakes provide for passionate and sporty driving pleasure. The design of the new model line was also comprehensively advanced. The vehicle was completely revised except for the luggage compartment lids, the windscreen and the convertible top. Inside, a newly designed dash panel frames the cockpit. In addition, the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a state-of-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option.
The launch of the new 718 Boxster generation represents the first time since the late 1960s that Porsche is implementing sports cars with four-cylinder flat engines again since the end of the 1960s. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-litre engine of the 718 Boxster has a maximum torque of 380 Newton metres (gain of 100 Newton metres), which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The 2.5-litre engine of the 718 Boxster S even attains 420 Newton metres (60 Newton metres more) over a speed range from 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm.
Thus, the new 718 Boxster models sprint even faster. The 718 Boxster - with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package - sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds (0.8 seconds faster). The 718 Boxster S with the same equipment completes this discipline in 4.2 seconds (0.6 seconds faster). The top speed of the 718 Boxster is 275 km/h, and the 718 Boxster S has a top speed of 285 km/h.
The Porsche turbo concept is boosting driving performance while improving fuel economy. In the 718 Boxster, the four-cylinder flat engine with PDK has a NEDC fuel consumption figure of 6.9 l/100 km (1.0 l/100 km less). In the 718 Boxster S, the 2.5-litre turbo flat engine with PDK consumes just 7.3 l/100 km (0.9 l/100 km less).
The 718 models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option.

I got a 718 GTS around a month ago. I had a 996 before that and I can tell you the 718 is a fabulous car. I don't know how you couldn't be blown away with the performance of the car. I'm sure the 981 sound is different but it dosen't have even close to the power unless you wind the piss out of it. That sound is the 981 trying to keep up with the newer 718, Ha ha. The 718 in the sport mode sounds great, maybe not the same as the 981; but then a Ferrari makes a 981 sound like a VW. The 718 is a masterpiece of a sports car!!

Agree 100%. I was debating between a base model 911 or a 718 GTS or S and after driving both and doing months of research I decided on the 718 S; the sound is definitely different than the flat 6 but the trade off in performance is worth what you "lose" in sound experience.

Porsche Engineers were not targeting to beat the 981 sound, but the 981 performace and driverability, and they did it. The 718 is a step forward on every single dinamic/performance point compared with the former 981. Both cars are great, but no dicussion which one has the edge.

I have a 986 but should I ever be in the position to buy a much newer model it would be the 981. The sound of the flat 6 is the soul of the car.

@@kcimages5157 Agree! The videos on KZbin that talk down on the 718 sound have obviously used very selective clips because the sound is not as bad as they say or might I even say GOOD but different.

The flat 4 sound is not as bad as they say, but still... can't beat the flat 6 sound. Indeed a fast balanced car.

my m8 had both , 718 s fully loaded and 981 s fully loaded, prefered the 981 for its sound, 718 was quicker, but most of his friends prefered the 981s

With piston rod connection issues. Sounds like a Subaru WRX. Subaru WRX is 321 hp. That flat six sound is not replaceable in a Porsche. Sad day

When Porsche makes a 4-cyl 911 I’ll believe they really love this car/engine combo. Until then, it’s a sacrifice to the EU emissions gods so that they can produce 911’s for their truly wealthy clientele.

Synonymous in almost all cases. All boxer engines are flat engines, but all flat engines are not always boxer engines. Instead, a flat engine can be a "180 degree V-engine". Flat engines are also called horizontally opposed engines, which would be different than a horizontally inline engine like a BMW K1200 engine, which is technically flat, but not opposed, making for a confusing naming convention. Hence, since almost all flat engines are boxer engines, the convention is that they are synonymous.
