What's your thoughts on removing the swirl flaps on the M47 320d (Alpina D3) What's the purpose of them? I have a small oil leak from the inlet manifold so I'll be changing all the rubber seals but wondered about removing the swirl flaps while I'm at it. Also going to change the crank case breather to the vortex design as the old loo roll design clog up.
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the M47 engine has 2 inlet runners for each cylinder, and the swirl flaps allow one of the runners to be blocked off at low RPM so that there is faster airflow through the remaining one, which provides greater 'swirl' in the cylinder - providing better low down power/torque, and lower emissions. Just how much improvement they make is the subject of a lot of debate, and so far I haven't seen a dyno chart showing the difference (but I intend to do one in a future video). The problem with them is that the little screws holding them in place can eventually vibrate out and so your engine ends up eating the screw and the swirl flap. An alternative to removing them is to epoxy the screws in place with JB Weld (or similar) or find someone who can do very delicate TIG welding, and weld them in place. It is a good plan to change to the newer vortex design breather for sure. All the best with your improvements!

Hi Steve, I got a BMW320D that gives me P290900 Air System, air to EGR mas flow, error. could this contributed to the early building up of soot in my dpf? my dpf regeneration does work though, I drive 24miles motorway one way and it can drop the soot from 50g to 5g in the travel given that there's not much traffic build up. Im just trying to find out if I have to clean my DPF like what you had in your YT videos. Thanks. very informative. glad to find it. Or it could be an EGR issue like an air leak somewhere that I had to continue finding it. Thanks

Hi, if your car has done over 150,000 miles then there is going to be a lot of the space in the filter that is taken up with ash, which will make it clog up quicker than when it was new. However, it sounds like your main issue is soot-clogging due to a failed engine system, so a remove and clean will only help things out for a few weeks. Once the engine is working happily you will be able to see how often the regenerations are being scheduled.

Hi Steve i was reading everyone’s comments and your reply, also I watched your recent video about glow plugs and dpf and how they related. I recently bought diagnostics scanner to clear of air bag error on my dashboard, then I found many old errors and I cleared all of them. Then I scanned again I found few errors coming up on scanner but nothing on the dashboard. Hi there, If there is a problem with the DPF could you remove the vacuum line from the top of the EGR valve to make sure that is doesn’t open? Then this will allow the exhaust to get hot enough to burn the sutt off?
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! Stopping the EGR from opening will certainly raise the exhaust temperature (along with a long drive), but it may not be enough - depending on the car. If your car has a DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) then the engine ECU may spray in some extra fuel as a post injection pulse along with shutting the EGR valve in order to really bump up the exhaust and DPF temperature, but it won't do this without a fully working EGR valve. However if your car doesn't have a DOC then locking closed the EGR valve will probably help the passive DPF regeneration on a long drive, but your car will probably not run active regeneration properly without a functioning EGR valve and glow plugs.

If the EGR valve is not functioning correctly does it always generate a fault code? I have an E91 330D which has become really thirsty over the last few months (+25% increase in consumption) and it always seems to be running a cool catalyst temp (200 to 350C) and takes a long time for the coolant temperature to reach mid 80s C. Dealer has replaced glow plugs, GP control unit and main thermostat with little change in symptoms. Regeneration happens, but only occasionally do cat temps get up into the 500C range. Is it possible that the actual part that seals the EGR port closed has worn away, and although the ECU is moving the EGR valve to the closed position it is not actually sealing the port? I am using the BMW Drive Analyser app and OBD dongle to monitor temperatures. Another symptom is that in normal (non-regen) operation the Lambda is almost always at 1.40, with little fluctuation on accelerator movement. When in re-gen mode, all of a sudden Lambda becomes really sensitive to accelerator movement (which is what I would expect it to be all the time). Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi, certainly. I have found that the EGR valve, the MAF sensor, and the MAP sensor can all be partly or completely broken without putting up codes. You can pull the pipe off the front of the EGR valve and watch it and hear it working at idle. Live data can indicate if the MAF and MAP sensors are responding like they should when you press on the accelerator pedal.

However, I am paranoid that the DPF might have been adversly affected by the old EGR part. I have a scanning tool to check ODB2 data. Can you tell me what parameters would indicate a healthy DPF? Thanks.
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! Do you think that your EGR valve was failing in some way before it was replaced - maybe a loss of power or rough running on startup? Most of the valves replaced under the recall were probably working fine. If you check OBD2 data, look for any DPF related errors - which would indicate a pretty severe issue. If you can check the live data, then you can get a better idea of what is going on - for example how many miles/kms since the last regeneration, the estimated levels of soot and ash, whether regeneration is enabled or requested. If your car requests a regeneration when it has only gone 100 miles then that would indicate an issue for sure.

Hi Steven, I had a recall on the EGR for my BMW (F20) 116d recently. Following which the part was subsequently replaced at the local dealership. Since the replacement after driving the car for some 2000 miles, I experienced power loss and the car refused to accelarate. I suspected that this may have been due to the EGR works and took the car back to BMW for diagnostics, which suggested replacing inlet manifolds, decoking and replacement on glow plugs, although the car never gave any warning lights on the dashboard. I saw your video and suspect that the EGR might still be responsible for the loss of power and may cause the issue to recur. Can you kindly advise as to what will be the best course of action should the problem arrise again?
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! I can't quite tell from your question whether BMW did the work that they recommended, or that they haven't done it yet and that you are thinking about it. Your BMW will almost never give dashboard warning lights about these kinds of engine issues, so you really need to get a diagnostic unit plugged in, and to read the engine error codes - I recommend the Autel AP200 as the cheapest good solution that I have found so far. Inlet manifold clogging almost never causes the car to suddenly lose power - it is more of a gradual thing over months or years. If glow plugs or the EGR valve isn't working, then there can be power loss because the diesel particulate filter can't do any active regeneration, and so it becomes blocked with soot - although it should recover again once the underlying issues are resolved.

@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, many different engine issues can stop regeneration, but EGR valve is always first on the list of things to check - if it is not closing the whole way then the exhaust gas temperature can not get hot enough. If it is glow plugs then you should get an error message that one or more is not functioning. Check for engine temperature too - if your thermostat is stuck open then your ECU might think that your vehicle is not warm enough to do a regeneration.

Hi, chances are that if the EGR is not closing it is because it is jammed by a big lump of oily soot, and will need to be given a good clean. The problem could also be that your DPF is very blocked up with ash, and so there is just not enough capacity left to burn off the soot. A good diagnostic tool should be able to give you an estimated ash reading, or give you a number of miles to next regeneration.

Steven I’ve been creating an ongoing diagnosis of my 2011 VW Golf TDI 2.0 (with 229,000miles) since last August of 2022. This all began with my engine light coming on intermittently last August with P2002 and P0401 codes coming up. I began my work by taking off and cleaning the EGR valve in October 2022, no change. In November 2022 I replaced my EGR Filter. Then the engine light stayed off. I thought it was success! But… the engine light and same codes came back 300 miles later, and have stayed on since. Worth to note: I am driving aggressively many miles for Uber (600-800 miles a week). I finally took it to a professional in January 2023 and had my latest diagnosis. Many things checked out positively until they wanted to look at the EGR vacuum solenoid which was out of spec with an exhaust mg/stroke from 160 mg/stroke down to 144.5 mg/stroke. They were then going to check the EGR potentiometer but that process would not be so conclusive and so I declined. The P2002 and P0401 have remained on and no longer display intermittently, since November of last year 2022. So now, 6 months later I now have the DPF light coming on, although intermittently. I figure it is the EGR cooler that is clogged up with carbon/oil. And just this past week, my car now goes into LIMP mode for the first time. I drive my car home, turn it off and then back on.. drive around the next day on the highway and LIMP mode doesn’t come back.m, DPF still intermittent and now additional codes of P240F “EGR slow response” and P2BA6 “no definition found” which I have learned for my car means NOx gases excedance or something of the sort. Am I right, could this be a clogged EGR cooler? I’m getting ready to clean it with Liqui Molly Diesel Purge. I hope I have gone the right path. Any input given would be very valuable.

The systems all work together, so an EGR valve that won't fully close means that your DPF scheduled regeneration will be cancelled, and then your DPF will clog up over a few months. It doesn't mean that is happening in your case, but it is definitely a fairly common reason - and it is usually pretty easy to check.

Can an egr off do any damage to the engine on long term? My car doesn't have dpf from factory. I been told by my mechanic that engine was designed to run with egr so by blanking it may wear due to the higher temperature
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, it is very unlikely that a diesel vehicle with a factory tune would do itself any damage as a result of a blanked off or 'disabled in software' EGR valve, as the ecu has to add additional 'post injection' fuel pulses as well as closing off the EGR valve in order to get the exhaust gas temperature up to 600 degrees Celcius for active DPF regeneration. A lot more than 600 degrees is needed to burn valves and turbo components. However, once you are in the realm of custom tunes then any amount of silliness is possible as the ecu can be programmed to ignore all kinds of safeguards. If you wanted to be extra friendly to your engine just to be sure, then it is best not to get into the habit of keeping your foot to the floor in a high gear when going up a steep hill at 1500 rpm, for example.

@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, lots of good questions and concerns - and I probably should make a video about it. Anything re-circulated will go all the way through the engine - only some of the soot and oil will end up in the intake manifold. When everything is working fully on an engine then the intake system stays quite clean, even when there is an EGR valve in operation. The problems come when there are turbos that leak oil, or boost leaks or an EGR valve that is not working too well - then the oily soot that results is re-circulated too, which builds on itself and clogs things up more. Regarding the exhaust gas temperatures: unless you are putting out a lot of smoke or have a tuned engine then you have nothing to worry about, but I'll try and get some actual numbers for you from a diagnostic unit running on a car with a blanked EGR, just so we all know.

Hi, thanks for watching! The amount of soot going into the DPF isn't effected by the EGR valve. The soot comes from the diesel fuel, so whether it goes straight out, or instead is recirculated and then goes out doesn't make a difference to the DPF (although it will make a difference to how much soot ends up in the intake manifold). The EGR valve will not make any meaningful difference to the back pressure in the DPF either.

Normal levels of fresh air contain 74% nitrogen and therefore give you a nice clean burn but produce high levels of nitrogen oxide. Therefore mixing dirty exhaust gas with fresh air all be it just enough oxygen to give a nice burn controls the nitrogen oxide levels ! Removing the egr function is a good idea but the greens won't like it .

Hi my BMW X5 had a engine fault come on but the car runs fine any help there of why it is coming on??
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the only way to really know what is going on is to plug in a good diagnostic unit, like an Autel AP200 or better, so that you can see the underlying DTC fault codes. An engine light can mean probably 50 different things, so it isn't useful on its own.

Yep. You are gonna need a diagnostic tool. In my case I use an android /ios app called carscanner on my phone or my ipad (3€ to make it full funtional) and a cheap Mini Elm327 V1.5 Wifi OBD2 to plug in the car. The DTC codes and sensor reading you get fully agree with ISTA-D (official BMW) software I have on my laptop. So I trust it 100%. Cheap and easy way to control what's going on.

Great video & explanation. I do have a question for you if you wouldn’t mind? I have drivechain warning in with engine management light. My little code reader comes up with the following. Air system, Air to EGR mass flow, plausibility: measured air mass compared with calculated air mass too high. Also, exhaust back pressure sensor, before turbocharger plausibility: exhaust back pressure before turbine dynamically not plausible. Any idea what the problem may be? Many thanks

Hi, sounds like you have a dead MAP sensor, and the MAF sensor may need a clean too. After that clear and re-check the codes to see whether all of the errors stay gone.

Model of car? I had this on Mini Cooper D. Swirl flaps removed, egr blanked and actuator/egr motors coded off. The issue was blocked sensing line to exhaust pressure sensor

Hi Steve, I just bought a 328d and two weeks later it gave some engine codes P2004 intake manifold runner control stuck open and P2453 DPF Differential pressure circuit range/performance. I took the entire manifold and cleaned it but the the code did not go away so does that mean its time to replace the air intake manifold?? There is also a open EGR coolant recall issued by BMW. Do you think this might be related to the recall? What do you suggest at this point?
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! It doesn't sound like it is related to the recall. It could be a range of things causing the swirl flap system to be inoperable, ranging from a loose wire or connection through to a total seizure. There is a good chance that the issue is stopping the DPF regeneration from working properly, which is why you are getting the P2453 error.

@@StevenBTuner Do you think I should buy a new intake. The mileage is 130k miles and the car also jerks at low rpm about 1.5-2k when its cold but it does not hesitate at all when the engine is warm.
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, a new intake would certainly eliminate any issues in that area for quite some time, however some individual parts are available separately if you can determine that it is a single failure causing your problem: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=8E53-USA-09-2016-F30N-BMW-328d&diagId=11_5442 (probably not your exact car, so don't use this as are reference for buying anything). The low speed jerking when cold could be caused by those stuck swirl flaps, but could also be to do with faulty glow plugs, a sluggish EGR valve or a clogged up MAP or MAF sensor, or a combination of things.

@@StevenBTuner Thank your for your quick response! I have checked glow plugs. They were all good but since mileage was too high. I order new ones to replace. I will also order part 2 seal mount as well to see if that helps to eliminate some codes. Thank you for your videos. I lived close by I would gladly let you work on my car. I can find a good diesel mechanic around here in my town. The diesel car are very rare around here. Let me know if you ever want to move to Las Vegas! Cheers!

Hi, I probably should do a glow plug replacement vid, but the main tricks are to get the engine nice and hot first or they might not come out, and to use the same brand for all plugs and that brand probably should be Beru or Bosch. All the best with the work! Haha, Las Vegas sounds great!

Hi, thanks for watching! Which pollutant was too high? If you're fuel injectors aren't spraying well then you might a high count for nitrogen oxides or CO2 perhaps.

I don't agree, EGR problems increase soot loading due to lack of exhaust flow in the egr. The computer computer commands 100% egr, approx 50% of the gasses entering the cylinder is exhaust. Therefore the mass sensor will have a corresponding drop for the same load. If the egr can't supply the gas, ie the pipes and valve is blocked, then the maf sensor reads higher. The computer then supplies more fuel. That is what creates more soot. Have look at a euro3 engine, compare to a euro 4, egr pipework is larger to flow more exhaust.

Hi, thanks for the detailed response - it is great information for an update video. The most important idea I'm trying to convey with these types of vids is that a blocked DPF is the result of some other failure that needs to be addressed, rather than replacing the DPF.

This happened to me. Experienced egr issues for over a year driving with it going into limp mode ever so often. It would either drive limp mode without power or would give a boost of power. Just changed the egr and it went into limp mode followed by an almighty release of white smoke from the exhaust and the dpf was glowing red. I know understand why that happened....due to the dpf regenerating after not functioning properly due to egr issues. I'm now wondering if the dpf needs attention and how much...I.e. replace it, use off the shelf dpf cleaners that are added to fuel or to get it professionally cleaned which is expensive. Or I could just leave it and hope it doesn't go into limp mode again.

Hi, if the DPF was blocked by soot, then it should fine now that you have resolved the underlying issue.

Ignore what the engineers say helps burn the particulates in the DPF and keep the temperature up. Because the return gases pass through the egr cooler and enter the combustion chamber. It's just one big ECO-shit and it all hits the wallet of the user himself

BMW's have a bypass flap in the EGR cooler and until the engine is warm - this flap is fully closed so EGR cooling is minimal to reduce heavy build up of soot when the engine is cold or during a regen cycle.
