I had the same reaction to the news, I though it was a joke or click bait, then it became all to real! DPreview was a place for us who enjoy buying older gear and want a quick way to see how the camera preforms. Sad to see it go! Though I wonder if this will just quench the need to buy more and just use what I have. So easily we get distracted by the gear, now it is time to use it...and not add to it. Sad days, I agree. @CameraConspiracies I honestly thought DPReview have been outdated for years. By the time cameras are on DPReview you have already seen 20 pre-reviews and reviews on KZbin and know the important specs by heart. I suppose we can assume one of the main appeals of DPreview was the consistency of their reviews and features. It was certainly a main factor for me. That review style is rarely copied on a large scale because DPreview already do it so well. With no more DPreview, I guess it's possible that someone will adopt their style on a larger scale. OTOH, I stopped using DPreview for my regular camera news some time ago... mainly because most cameras are so good that reviews rarely pick up the subtle differences that might be important to me. It's actually that reason that I started following Camera Conspiracies - I enjoy different perspectives. I was also addictively studying all the reviews, and that just fed my GAS.

The only real places left now are wildlife and nature. I don't have a need to show my work to the world, I would rather enjoy the fruits of my efforts and thank God for the beautiful blessings of the natural world and the ability to capture a memory. Maybe after I'm gone, it might help the future generations see the beauty of this world amidst the increasing digitization of everything. I feel AI, etc will make people value the real world even more and for that us photographers and filmmakers should never give up. Not to make them immerse into video and photo but to go outside and see the real world. We can already see how people are longing for real connection these days and real experiences. 10 years from now, we will appreciate the non connected world much more than they do now.

One of the first things I thought when I heard it was closing was that oh now camera conspiracies will have something to talk about. He was bored. xP But really it’s very messed up. There’s so much knowledge and experience there that will be erased. Sure, photographers in general tend to have a snob factor that makes them seem born for LA but they are also helpful at times. If you ask a question you’ll get 4 “it’s not the camera, it’s the glass”, 3 “it’s not the camera, it’s the person”, 2 “photography is so complex I need all the details of your life to answer this basic question”, and a couple kind people who will actually invaluably share their technical experience. If Amazon could just put a filter, it would be much less to store.

On DP Review, in economic terms: Sounds like a corporation destroying your utility to increase their profits. At minimum it isn't as profitable to have good equipment reviews. You lose money if spending goes to a product that you make less margin on. Even if this only works in the long run, it will make it harder to find rock solid equipment at a good price. Also they lose money if you find an older product that is better then a newer product. Especially if the older product has been discontinued. There are probably all sorts of game theory going into it for all corporations.
