Almost all new cameras include impressive video features, but for the best results you'll often need an off-camera recorder. Chris and Jordan take a look at the brand new Ninja V from Atomos, and explain why it might just be one of the most useful tools you can add to your camera.
For more information, check out our article 'Why would I want an external monitor/recorder?'

I've had the Ninja Inferno for about a year now and loved it. Ninja V seems like a solid small-form-factor alternative, and the NDI & timecode (and hopefully SDI eventually?) add-ons are super clutch. Wish I could pick one up to play with.

You're mentioning the brilliant autofocus on the Sony A7iii. I've been using both the Flame and the Ninja V on my A7iii and just FYI the face recognition autofocus does not work when connecting an HDMI monitor/recorder. It still has good autofocus features and it hasn't been much of a problem for me, but there is a difference you may want to be aware of.

I am thinking the Sony a9 w/Ninja V would have a special advantage for run and gun hybrid shooters. Because the a9 is blackout free while shooting photos, you should be able to record video & photos simultaneously. That could be very useful for news shooters! Can anyone verify that this is possible?

Thanks for the review. I certainly would like to see Jordan making more video reviews. Especially 'How To' videos. Many of the latest mirrorless cameras are making their cameras very capable video capturing tools as well as for photography. I am a reasonably accomplished amateur photographer but would class my videography skills as 'beginner' at best. I have just purchased a Sony A7RIII and XT3 (retirement purchase). I hopefully will now have the time to devote to my hobbies, yet video (and audio) capturing (let alone editing!) is a whole new world......any help will be gratefully received and avidly devoured.

An important note for gh5 gh5s users in anamorphic mode: The Atomos Ninja V seem to have a huge limitation: in 50/60P mode 4:3, the display does not want to display or record full screen, so you will have a small output on screen and also loose the x2 enlarger to focus while recording. Someone reported about the fan noise as well on the fan noise. Seriously, I was about to order this because the main reason I wanted this was for anamorphic mode but it seems it has some hidden flaws which I cannot live with.

Amazing production values here for a review - the unqiue introductory wide shot at 0:23, the selection of a perfect natural backdrop, and the audio is on point - I'm guessing that's a lav on Chris' jacket.

Interesting you mentioned that there isnt that much of a difference shooting with or without the Ninja V on a XT3. But you only talked about image quality, what about workflow? Avoiding the internal H265 codec could be a huge plus, especially when editing in premiere (it doesnt handle h265 too well as I heard). Could be a huge plus for the other cameras aswell, especially considering you can record to SSD
@thatjordandrake
@thatjordandrake 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! All-I ProRes or DNxHD is much easier on your editing system, as long as you're OK with the larger files.
@Hangs4Fun
@Hangs4Fun 5 жыл бұрын
@@thatjordandrake Here's something weird. I just got my Ninja V a couple of days ago and I'm trying to dial in my settings and figure out my new workflow (I shoot on a7R3 and a little on a6500). I was excited to see how much better Premiere ran on ProRes... So I do my tests, recording the same sequence each time with different settings. then go into post and pull them into Premiere (I edit on an Alienware with 32GB mem, GTX-1080 (yes on a laptop), 3 SSD's (2 are Samsung 960Pro NVMe) and laptop is 4K (and second monitor is LG curve 37" ultrawide). I drop one of the "ProRes" files from the Ninja V on a timeline, and then hit play. It plays somewhat ok the first time, but after that, it is too painful, it stops/starts, goes back some frames, audio drops, etc... wth? So I go look at the Sequence Settings, and Premiere has it as a DNxHD type? I figured I must have hit the wrong option on the Ninja V, but when I look DNxHD is even enabled yet (apparently you have to get an activation code, until then it isn't working). also, I always separate my O/S, from my NLE app, from the Media, and from Scratch. I had all of those "ProRes" files on a super fast 960Pro NVMe (which goes up to 3,500 MBytes/s (not bits, bytes)), yet it still has issues replaying. The Internal codecs from a7R3 as AVCS at 100mbps mp4's run just fine.. I even tried 24fps vs 60fps, and no difference in performance, though file sizes changed. I am trying to nail down this issue and determine the best settings for the Ninja V with my a7R3. I shoot videos in the wilderness of my doing landscape, wildlife, astro, backpacking/hammocking stuff. I am trying to get where I stop having to carry around the a6500 with sigma 16 f/1.4, another tripod, and a ton of fw-50 batteries which the a6500 eats like halloween candy when shooting 4K or 120fps slowmo. My goal is to completely use my a7R3 for both the photography AND most of the video work (still doing aerial with Mavic Air obviously, but for the few times I need to film me using the a7R3 I was going to start using my Note9 and/or my Mavic Air rubber banded to a 9oz tripod I have which I always seem to have 3 batteries with 25-30% battery left on). The Ninja V was also going to be how I start capturing the moments leading up to the shots (the moments before the Bald Eagle takes off, the moments before the light is perfect for the landscape shots, and in both of these cases, also show all of the settings on the screen). I feel this will be a much better experience then holding up a little RX0 or my cell phone to the back of the camera, plus I'm busy right at the moment of the shot being taken. All that being said though, I still would like to dial in the settings better. At this point I'm not sure what other settings to try here. To be honest, for the above use case I am describing, a 1080P codec would be just fine and would be leaps and bounds better than my current shaky hand held glimpse of the camera's screen. But I was hoping to grab useable 4K footage. And I will be shooting a documentary and some short films early next year, and for those I will need to get this figured out. I was really surprised to see these ProRes files (btw I did eventually activate DNxHD and did similar test) fall down in my NLE. I'm still looking for good user guides, best practices, etc.
@thatjordandrake
@thatjordandrake 5 жыл бұрын
Afraid, I'm not going to much help there. After a half decade of struggles, I finally unsubbed from Adobe CC. I always had trouble with native 4K playback on my Macbook Pro, so after running two NLEs for a while, I went to a Final Cut Pro X exclusively. I'd maybe shoot a message to my man Max Yuryev. He has the answers to everything about optimizing an NLE, video anything, and generally being one of the most likeable people on the entire internet.
@Hangs4Fun
@Hangs4Fun 5 жыл бұрын
@@thatjordandrake totally agree with Max Yurev comment and it sucks how he was demonized and is getting nowhere after months reaching out to Google/KZbin). I'm confident I have my Premiere tweaked as good as it can be. I was really let down to see ProRes HQ not improving the editing performance of my post workflow. I dont have to use the videos from the Ninja V as my final video sources, so for the footage where I show my camera settings and/or what lead to the photos I show I will use the Ninja V ProRes... what I'm doing to improve my post editing workflow performance is use the proxy option on my a7R3. Supposedly it will send your 4k footage to your main UHS-II card and a 720p proxy copy to your uhs-I card... supposedly when you load these into Premiere they use the 720p proxy to speed up editing, but at render time it goes to the 4k files. I know you can generate proxies with Premiere, but it takes time on hours of footage, whereas you can generate them on the fly on your camera

You make a good point. I mean costs about the same to buy a BMPCC 4k. Canon, Panasonic, and all the camera makers need to start making small form factor cinema cameras like Blackmagic has. Fuji and Nikon could really make a big splash since they don;t have big, expensive cinema camera lines to protect like Panasonic and Canon. Blackmagic has already set the bar.

Fan noise has been mentioned in other reviews. Has anyone recorded it to see how prevalent it is? Also curious if this is really worth it for A7iii shooters. I'm assuming for punch ins (4K footage, 1080 timeline) I would see an uptick in quality just because of bit rate?

I recorded a video using it close by on my desk, and my lav mic did pick up a little noise. I'd avoid using it in conjunction with an on-camera shotgun mic, but for most other purposes, it shouldn't be an issue.

Is it me? Why is the Atomos Ninja V quirky when it comes to audio playback? Before and during recording audio levels are visible in the display. However once clips are recorded, there is no way to hear audio of the recorded video. Yet, audio is heard on the camera sd card? Further, when pulling the clips off the SSD drive into the computer, no audio is heard in Quicktime. The only time audio of Ninja V recorded clips can be heard is when the clips are played in an NLE. Then, it's revealed that even though clips are monitored on Ch1 & Ch2, they are recorded on ch3 & ch4. Yup. audio clips cannot be played back on the tracks they are recorded from. Damn inconvenient to have to pull the SSD card out of the Ninja to be certain of the audio. Spoke to Atomos at PhotoExpo today, but no one could really speak to the issue. Is this normal for Atomos recorders? Is there a workaround?

Whenever I see a monitor or accessory with some decent mass to it perched fairly high atop a camera using only the hotshoe as a base, I can only cringe. I know this is a demo, but just about any user of a rig like this would struggle to not eventually bump or push that monitor and crack it off the hotshoe... there is a lot of leverage there! What mount would you suggest to put your Ninja V ( or any hefty accessory ) securely on top of a camera cage to protect that hotshoe investment? I have a GH5 with a SmallRig cage, if that's of any importance to this conversation. Oh yeah, and this wonderful Ninja V monitor which just arrived tonight ! Thanks for a nice review, man. I initially bought an Atomos Shogun Inferno recorder from B&H with power pack and a 2TB SSD, after I was told by the salesperson that I could record 4k 60 fps to this recorder, using my Canon 1Dx mark ii. Long story short, he was dead wrong, and as I found out, my camera doesn't even output ANY 4k signal, so I am hoping you would be able to help me answer a single question (since I am a brand new kid on the block when it comes to external monitors/recorders). Since I am shooting my videos with Canon 1Dx mark ii, and I like my footage in 4k 60 fps, and since I can't externally record 4k 60 fps using this camera, the next best thing is to make the internal recording with 4k 60 fps, and here is my question... If I am recording internally 4k 60 fps on my 1Dx ii, do I need a monitor that's capable of displaying 4k 60 fps? In other words, if I purchase a monitor that (for example) is only capable of displaying 4k 30 fps, (or even is only capable of displaying 1080 60 fps), would I still be able to make the internal 4k 60 fps recording, while monitoring the recording in progress on an external monitor for focus, and overall image analysis? Thank you.

0:11 Could you link to that exact HDMI to microHDMI cable you guys are using (I see they're good for UHD to 23.98). I'm looking for an alternative to the one Atomos sells for $99, that is HDMI 2.0a (yes, "a", is an update; there's actually 2.0b, and higher specified cables). I think Atomos' coiled cable is good up to 4K60. I think the specs for those are supposed to work for HDR. If your cables specs work for 4K without limitations, it would be great!

Hi. Have you had any problems with your Ninja V overheating? I just bought mine two days ago and I noticed that after 30 minutes it gets really hot. Is this normal or does this mean there is something wrong with it? Another question... What is the best battery to buy for the Ninja; a battery with the longest runtime? Thanks.

Thanks for sharing the review. Would you be able to mention what are the benefits of using this if I am shooting with a Sony A1? Thanks in advance.

Best thing hands down in this video is the background. I'll take it with my 8-bit, 4:2:0 AVCHD camera over the GH5S with the Ninja 5 any day.

Fan noise is the ONLY ONLY thing that concerns me. I do lots of interviews, indoors, and I mic both with a boom and a lav (often just a lav) so if that expensive lav picks up fan noise, that's a problem.

You should really test the outputs. The Ninja V will not output to Teradek, Vaxis, Serv Pro, Ikan or Small HD 503. The list is growing. This is serious issue if you need wireless HD (steadicam, pro gimbal work, cranes, vehicle work, etc).

Awesome video. I’m looking into this to go with my Sony RX100VA. Mostly to record longer 4K footage without the over heating. Do you think this would be a good fit and what cage do you recommend? Thanks again for the overview.

the add for this device claims "Eliminate your camera's internal compression and time limits - record up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR video direct from your camera's sensor over HDMI 2. 0. Teamed with a 1TB Atom SSD mini you can now achieve up to 150 minutes of 4K recording on a single drive!" but will this record 4k 60fps on the sony a7rII even though that camera can only record 4k at 30FPS?? and how can it record 10bit from that camera when that camera only outputs 8-bit 4.2.0??

I'm impressed with the sharpness of the XT3 but ambivalent about the colors. In particular when looking at nature footage plants and wildlife look desaturated to me, is this just a setting? Ken Rockwell said the XT2 excels at skin colors but other footage (like landscape shooting) looks muted, hope this isn't the case with this newer camera. I'd like to see if the XT3 is capable of outputting lush colors like the GH5.

Yes, it's just the setting - there are about 14 film simulations, I think. And you can re-process the RAW files in the camera, as well as change the contrast etc for each film in advance or for a specific image afterwards. There are plenty of films which I never use, or rarely use, and I often see reviews with Fuji images and wish that they'd show something other than Provia or Velvia. The beauty of Fuji is that they have an excellent selection which can be tuned to your style, and re-processed/experimented with immediately without fuss. (In fact, you can even shoot multiple film simulations simultaneously if you like.) I virtually never postprocess Fuji files outside the camera, despite having Capture One and Affinity at hand. Some brands are criticised for having RAW colours which are time-consuming to perfect, or which are always compromised, yet I've never heard this about Fuji. This may have something to do with the colour filters and coatings on the sensor itself, as some reports of Fuji R&D have mentioned this, and they are unique in the industry due to their chemical expertise. You can certainly produce lush colours with Fuji. The G9 changed coatings after the GH5 and produces distinctly better images; personally, I wondered if this was part of a trade with Fuji for IBIS, as Panasonic and Fuji have collaborated on sensor R&D before.

I'm sure you could find footage with a search (X-T2/X-T3/X-H1 are more likely to have video analysis). Most of the information refers to stills, but also applies to video (I searched for video footage, but most were using subdued modes like Eterna and Chrome, not Velvia). I remember seeing videos by professionals who were pleased with the options, and didn't see the need for LUTs etc (though, Fuji X-T2+ now have 4K, F-Log built-in), especially for quick turnarounds. Are you sponsored by fujifilm, you just invested a lot of time into posting a bunch of links that endorses fujifilm lol. Ive seen most of that footage but thanks for posting it; again, I haven't seen a single piece of footage showing the fujifilm capable of outputting punchy lush video (like the Sony A7 series or that new blackmagic thats coming out). It all looks pretty flat and borderline desaturated to my eye.
