This photo reminds me an interview with a great artist Jay Munly: "(...)Billy Bragg, he did something for me. What kind of effect did he have on you? That was when people went to concerts and stood in line. So we were out at the Rainbow Music Hall all day. And all of a sudden this gentleman comes riding up on a bicycle with powered speakers on his back and he starts playing songs. He's like, "Oh, I'm playing tonight," and no one believed him. I don't think his album had even come out in the States yet. I think his EP had come out, so no one knew who he was, but he was on stage a few hours later. I was young at that time. I don't know what I was -- eleven, twelve. I wasn't even a teenager. " :)

The phrase that Trevelyan used about the Irish Famine being the work of “an all-wise and merciful providence” smacks so much of Thatcher and the Protestant thing that good works don’t matter, only faith, or, in her case, fanatical conviction. @GuitarRocker20088 жыл бұрын
Hmm did some research and I will concede that the Jacobite version wasn't the original but i've found that both the song you refer to and a song called "my love is in germany" claims the tune (not the lyrics) was composed by some Holland Colonel around the same time. Though looking at the two articles the levellers one seems to have much better citations and evidence so I am happy to concede that point as well until further evidence can be found.
@gaconnochie8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that you were wrong Wisdom Pen. As far as I know the original song was an anti-Jacobite song just not the version widely known in Scotland which is a later Robert Burns version - which though still blaming the Jacobites was more concillatory but the older song he based it on is vehemently anti-Jacobite and anti-Catholic with the lyrics "With the Pope you covenant, as they say, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, And Letters there you sent, Which made your Prince present to array." If anyone actually knows a version that predates the 1745 Rebellion then it'd be interesting to see the lyrics

The enclosures act meant that peasants could no longer graze or work the land freely - it was 'common' land, in other word, it belonged to everybody. The creation of private property was a process of exclusion; it is not good enough to say that because the land 'belongs to nobody' it is legitimate to claim it as your own. The ownership of private property is a modern construct and privatisation is a continuation of that same process of eliminating the commons.
