Hmm did some research and I will concede that the Jacobite version wasn't the original but i've found that both the song you refer to and a song called "my love is in germany" claims the tune (not the lyrics) was composed by some Holland Colonel around the same time. Though looking at the two articles the levellers one seems to have much better citations and evidence so I am happy to concede that point as well until further evidence can be found.

As far as I know the original song was an anti-Jacobite song just not the version widely known in Scotland which is a later Robert Burns version - which though still blaming the Jacobites was more concillatory but the older song he based it on is vehemently anti-Jacobite and anti-Catholic with the lyrics "With the Pope you covenant, as they say, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, And Letters there you sent, Which made your Prince present to array." If anyone actually knows a version that predates the 1745 Rebellion then it'd be interesting to see the lyrics

Protest songs have existed as long as people have oppressed each other. I think Billy would be one of the first people to say what a huge influence Guthrie was on him but why is that a bad thing? I would also like to point out that 'as' in your case doesn't need a capital letter just as 'like' and 'school' don't. It would look like all that time spent at school hasn't really paid off.
