The roll through on what looks like some of the failed throws is what impresses me the most.. Somebody might call them some form of lateral drop, but idk.. It’s just conditioning and correct instinct and a throw within a throw to me

Watching videos like this reminds me how much I love the sport. I could go the rest of my life without watching a football, basketball, or baseball game. MMA and boxing are not great in my view either; too violent, and I don’t like the thought of how much brain damage those guys take. Wrestling is perfect though, and videos like this explain why.

I was lucky enough to start wrestling under the tutelage of a coach who was a Greco specialist. By my junior year at 145lbs, everyone knew to stay away from my underhooks, overhooks, and Russian armbar tie. Some opponents would basically run backwards off the mat to get away from my underhook. It's rare to meet a wrestler who trains in nothing except throws. When I was lucky enough to face a guy like that, there were always fireworks. My best move was the seat-belt hip-toss from a right side underhook and my left hand just needed to get a grip on their right wrist, shoulder, elbow, forearm, or neck to launch them onto their back. As I would step through and load them on my hips before I sent their feet flying over their heads, it was always comical to me how many of them I could hear say, "Shit" or "Oh shit", just before they went flying. I was in the semis at a pretty prestigious tournament against an out of state kid from a wrestling powerhouse in Nebraska, Omaha Skutt Catholic. We were tied up going into overtime and I'd just given up a takedown to allow my opponent to tie the match with like 5 seconds left. My coach was irate. I told him to settle down, I knew how to beat the kid. OT started and we went into sudden victory. The kid always reached out with his left hand to get a collar tie. Before he could get his hand on my shoulder, I reached over and got wrist control with my left hand and took control of him with a tight Russian tie. I jerked his body toward me and used my forehead to dig into his temple. He immediately started to try to face me and back away. I let go of his bicep with my right hand and maintained wrist control. I put my right arm over his shoulders, like you would a buddy of yours. His coaches had no idea what was happening. My coach did. Then in one motion I used my left foot to kick his feet together as I jerked on his wrist and used my arm across his shoulders to tug him toward me as I swept his feet. He went down like a sack of potatoes. The ref told me that it was definitely the move of the tournament. He had never seen anything like it before. When I went over to shake the Skutt coaches hands, they asked me, "What the hell was that?", I smirked and said, "It's called the 'buddy' trip," because you have to put your arm around the shoulders like he's your buddy." They just raised their eyebrows and said, "Never heard of it." I lost in the finals against the eventual state champion. He pinned me in like 45 seconds or something. But when I went home and watched the video of the semi-finals match, I saw my coach's reaction to my set up before the buddy trip. He elbowed the assistant coach sitting next to him and chuckled to himself when he saw what I was doing. Then after I tripped the kid my coach got up and puffed his chest out before he laughed and looked back at my mom and the rest of our fans. He was overflowing with pride when pointed to himself and smiled as he said, "I taught him that!" I talked to the Skutt kid after the match, he wasn't even upset about the loss. He said, "If I lose to something like that, I'll take it. How the hell was I supposed to stop you when I had no idea what you were doing?" I believe he ended up taking 3rd. Folkstyle coaches rarely see the benefits from Greco techniques because it's very easy to turn a good throw into a penalty point because you want your throw to display grand amplitude. Sometimes it's hard to stop yourself when you know you could suplex(souplay), slam, or drop your opponent directly on their head. In Greco that's the goal. In folkstyle, that's illegal. But for some reason, arm-spins are allowed, go figure.

The Russian wrestlers often start their career or co compete in Sambo, which is kind of a mix of wrestling and Judo. It’s got a ghee jacked but not pants and does not ban lower body attacks, so it makes sense that they go for more throwing techniques.

It's folkstyke so they have to be in control/on top at the end of the throw to get the points. Freestyle and greco gives points for exposure so you can explode with the throw and not worry about being in control/on top at the end.
