The government spent $400k and 3 years to fine him $3,000. If that doesn’t perfectly encapsulate the idiocy of government spending, I don’t know if anything will.

@@RobertSmith-lg7jp on the face of it, it might seem disproportionate, but he's put the consequences of his actions all over the internet, had his passport and career compromised for 3 years, (and possibly longer). I live in central London, near bank, and I honestly cannot explain the levels of complexity that is beneath me. There’s a black door in an alleyway below me that is a private members club and is essentially 5 stories down and is absolutely huge. People don’t realise that London has two cities, above ground and below ground. There are hundreds possibly thousands of abandoned tunnels and bunkers below this city. It’s fascinating.

I work by Bank as well, and under our office building, there used to be a restaurant called The Throgmorton. It's absolutely huge. I believe it goes down by at least three levels, shame it's gone, was a nice place.

Lucky he didn't. I remember hearing a few years back about a guy who deliberately tried to get into MI5, or MI6 (one of them) via underground tunnels. He was posting about it on social media, right up to his last attempt and was livestreaming himself going through a tunnel when 3 people dressed in suits with flashlights approached him and grabbed him, taking the phone and cutting the stream. That guy was never seen again. Not sure what tunnel, or part of London here was under/near, but I reckon it was close to MI5/MI6 and they got him.

He wouldn't have fared any better under any other country's judicial system. If he had done it in another major European country, the same thing would have happened. If he had done it in New York (if he were non American), he would never be allowed back in to the USA again. If he had done it in Beijing or Moscow, he would still be in prison now. If he had done it in North Korea, he would never be seen again. You believe a state can allow people to access their communications hub with impunity and advertise to every idiot in the world how to do so? Just because 'oh im writing a book, so im fine to do as I please, I promise I will be respectful, honest'. It's a very naive thought.

Holding much more serious examples as clear breaches of human rights and furthermore an example of an undemocratic system. Yet most folk have no idea the same things happen in your own country. As soon as boundaries are tested in even the smallest way you’ll find out there’s no difference. No rights, no freedoms. If they’ve decided you’ve done something wrong. You’re done. In these countries most law abiding citizens don’t see their rights being infringed. It’s only when you twist the wrong screw you find out how little you matter as an individual. This is true in most countries. And before before anyone starts giving me examples. Consider the money and energy used to deal with someone removing some screws. Imagine he twisted a different screw. Ive been fascinated with ancient tunnel networks and subterranean worlds. While in Peru for 2 years I did lots of exploring and found ancient runnels that the locals say are pre Inca made by the "gods". The walls are smooth rock like they were melted! And big enough to take horses and cattle through. Also other kinds of incan tunnels all over the place. Some say the pre Inca tunnels of the ancients run underground for hundreds of kilometers. There's one tunnel system confirmed to run all the way from Maccu Picchu in Peru to Bolivia and onwards to a mountain top in Brazil. Under Cusco city there's a huge laberynth (maze) which is hidden from the tourists because so many people got lost and never came back in the 1980s and earlier. They had to block of the entrances. But there are still ways in. In one small village we found an Incan "escape tunnel" that travels from the village about 15kms underground to the top of a mountain nearby. Pretty interesting. The locals wouldn't let us go there. They were very wary of gringos. We had death threats a few times for been in non tourist areas. We traveled on foot disguised as Priests to avoid trouble but ended up having to spend many days blessing families, livestock, villages etc in order to keep the locals happy and to get permission to be there. We found tunnels no foreigners had ever seen before. (As far as I know). We heard incredible stories from the locals of tall white ancient wise people who still live in secret in the Andes to this day in hidden temples where the mountains meet the high jungle. I hope to return some day soon when all this covid BS is over and continue the quest for the secret temple. It was the best adventure of my life (so far).
