In relation to Dr Brett I think people need to understand the difference between minimising risks and maximising safety. Minimising risks is taking the collisions out of rugby - only allow tackles around the waist, no more pushing in the scrums for example, whereas maximising safety is keeping all the elements that we love about rugby but just make that as safe as possible with improved medical monitoring and support e.g. fancy mouthguard, return to play protocols etc. A difficult balance to find.
@richardyoung440516 сағат бұрын
It is difficult to find the balance but I would like to understand how the fighting sports deal with this. At least in our game the objective is not to incapacitate your opponent where as in fighting sports the objective is literally to smash the opponent into la la land
@nicholasfallowfield437915 сағат бұрын
@ agreed. And both my sons gave up rugby at about 16 years old due to injuries. One with repeated concussion and the other broke his collar bone twice in the same year. The amateur and professional game is very different.
@garywagner2466Күн бұрын
Rugby needs a strong foundation in the clubs with youth programs. That’s where you create and nurture the stars of the future, their supporters, and enthusiastic spectators. It can’t always be about the professionals at the top of the pyramid. World Rugby has forgotten that. The kids who get involved, become passionate rugby enthusiasts, and carry that passion for life are the backbone of the international game. Players, coaches, officials and administrators have to have that passion. Without it, you just have people going through the motions. There are already far too many of them.
@icefarrow7959Күн бұрын
World Rugby has almost zero to do with that. That's dealt with by the individual unions.

I think a major part of growing the game especially for a younger audience is the Gaming Console side of things there is currently a rugby union game coming soon “RUGBY 25” which if this was advertised during International breaks on tv adverts and podcasts more will buy or play it and do what FIFA has been doing for younger football audiences by showing off the game in other ways

New Zealand also made substitutions so it’s a little rich to suggest Marcus Smith going off changed the game… George Ford looked pretty under control when he came on… New Zealand made a tactical change that took control of the game for the last 15 minutes.

Salary Caps !!!! This is crazy talk .. the only way to keep future player interest in Union is to figure out how to pay them more. you need to make more money. making more money doesnt mean playing more games / tournaments. its about driving a more sustainable business and adopting business models that are not still stuck in the 80s.

Each pro comp needs to run independently of World Rugby & learn to run proper pro sport. They should all be allowed to tinker with rules that suit the peoples interests in that country without hinderance from World Rugby. Each country has to commit to international windows where tests are played under agreed international laws and top tier pro Rugby cannot be allowed to happen at the same time. Rugby Union has great playing numbers they just don't know how to run pro comps for entertainment that generate money other than the World Cup which is great. The club comps need to learn the entertainment game fast or the game will die at a pro entertainment level & we will all be left sadly watching the NRL every week.

Very interesting. Thanks a lot for the interview. Hope you'll do the same with Abdelatif Benazzi. I must say I quite dislike this vision of growing growing growing the game not matter how, especially when it's about the growing those who are already rich. But seems to be the trend today. The entrance of CVC in URC, PremierShip and 6Ns is a disaster for that imo. Anyway, thanks a lot. Love your show.

Rugby is not a safe game. There will always be collisions and rough stuff, thats why we play. The solution lies within coaching structures and player conditioning. There is also far too much rugga being played...so if you want to improve player safety, rather apply the less is more principle. Currently its a war zone with the amount of injuries we see week in week out, its out of control.

Why not reduce subs Have 8 available but you can only do 5 subs. This will increase the attrition of the game, open it up and make the management think in real time about who comes on the field. Also this will reduce the gladiator collision and make people fitter for 80 minutes and think more on their feet
@therealmrfishpasteКүн бұрын
You're operating under several false assumptions... 1. The two Springbok forwards who routinely play the full 80mins are Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph Du Toit...so having to play a full 80mins doesn't lead to smaller players with smaller collisions. 2. The Springboks now, with bomb squad and all, play a far more expansive game than they did in 2007, when they played 10-man rugby under Jake White and hardly used their bench at all.
@hamishfleetwood4386Күн бұрын
Not really mate. I understand your point. But today we don’t see players off their feet at 80 minutes because of the attrition of the game now. You go back to 96 when the ABs v South Africa in those epic test matches. Most of those players were exhausted after 80 and the games were epic to watch. High scoring and epic to watch

Rugby is not a product. Please leave the game to the players, coaches and fans. Officials, refs and corporates need to take a huge step back. Money, bureaucracy and bad losers have no place between four white lines. Australia, and a few others need to pull up their socks and start fixing their game, and their players. Stop focusing on rugby politics please.
@EasyWakeUpChannel3 сағат бұрын
One last word from me, then I'm done. You won't ever globalise rugby, ever. Is NFL or NBA globalised? Not really. Rugby is an alpha-male sport, and thus the appeal of the game is limited to certain personality types. This contrasts with football, the global game...due to its refined physicality, its way more accessible to a wider range of people. Rugby is for the precious few who understand what happens at the base of a ruck for instance...you'll never be able to explain it to some landscaper in California, for instance. Let's keep the game sacred.

Now that the northern hemisphere teams are good, let's have a southern hemisphere type lions team your England or France or whatever ,and also a northern hemisphere team vs southern hemisphere team match every two years, and also the winner of super rugby plays the winners of your comp winners. As an Allblacks fan I love when we play England not because I hate the team it's coz I hate those cocky media people(some), but that's what gets me emotionally invested in the game. Ireland are the same I can't stand their (we the best) attitude so again that makes me emotionally invested. It's getting the fans emotionally invested by creating a dislike for the other team because winning against them is so sweeeeeeeeet
