Dr. Brittney Cooper Discusses Social Context in Case Against R. Kelly

Today was the second day of the jury selection process in the sex trafficking case of R&B singer R. Kelly.
Dr. Brittney Cooper, who is an associate professor of Womens, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University, says that R. Kelly, in her estimation, is a sexual predator and believes the Black women and girls who were violated by him.
She joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss the larger social context of this case and what it means.

I believe abuse is in every culture. It’s the way it’s handled. Most women of any color and race don’t even get a chance to put their predator away in prison because our justice system is corrupted. They look at abuse as if it is something you can just stop once it happened the first time. Did they forget about the psychological part of what abuse can do to a person? I thought in college, specifically criminology, you at least take some type of class for that typical subject. We should have empathy for the women in this case. Because in the end...music comes and goes but the painful memories of abuse never do. It’s up to them to stay strong and fight through it.

Kelly took her under his wing and started having a sexual relationship with her. Aaliyah got pregnant! Kelly panicked and quickly came up with a plan to lie about Aaliyah’s age and marry her, which he did. Aaliyah, BTW, got an abortion. She died in 2001. May she Rest In Peace.

I just had to come back here again to give my views. This woman has annoyed me so much the way she talks about a man with NOT ONE CRIMINAL RECORD. His accusers, however…. Why should we believe these women when there is no evidence to suggest that they are telling the truth? It could easily be that they are the PREDATORS and NOT the victims. There’s also nothing in a woman’s DNA to suggest that she is incapable of lying or incapable of displaying predatory behaviour or incapable of abusing a man. The way this woman interprets his songs speaks more to her mindset than the actual meaning of the songs. She needs to take her mind out of the gutter, “it seems like you’re ready” to me talks about a romantic relationship between a young couple, who have dated for sometime… The woman, traditionally, always holds back on “full” intimacy until she has been with her man for a long period of time. She does this for several reasons. She doesn’t want to appear “ easy”, or perhaps she wants him to earn this “prize” by means of “LOVE” been the currency. Obviously not the R.Kelly women🙄. In their cases, you can skip the “courtship” part as they are, let’s say, a certain “type” of women. I think Dr. Britney Cooper knows this only too well…

@@JDMHaze Um I believe this pandemic has a lot to do with plenty cases being delayed. 2nd Surviving R Kelly was a television show that brought awareness. This man has been under investigation way before that show. As for the 1st video that the public saw... It was him. I saw it on Limewire & Napster. He obstructed justice to get off that case. He wasn't acquitted because he's innocent. Funny he paid off people & he's currently charged for obstruction. Which means they have solid evidence. There's so much we do not know. Fans are making a judgment call based on his art. His art is not on trial. His criminal behavior is. I believe he is GUILTY of everything he's being charged with & then some. Read his book, read his indictments, read the discovery. Nothing about that monster says he's innocent. Pray for him & keep it pushing. He definitely needs it. No sympathy for the Pied Piper over here.
