Bellafill is a newer filler on the market, so many patients wonder what the pros and cons are of Bellafill. The key pro to Bellafill is that it lasts 5 years, so as compared with Juvederm, Restylane, and many of the other fillers in the market that lasts only about 6 months to a year, Bellafill gives you a long lasting result of about 5 years. So that’s really the key advantage to Bellafill. It lasts 5 years and you don’t need to come into the doctor’s office every 6 months or a year to have additional fillers performed. Instead, you have a result that lasts about 5 years.
The main disadvantage to Bellafill is twofold. One, we can’t use Bellafill in the lips. So if you’re looking for fuller lips or you are currently being treated in the lips with Restylane or Juvederm or one of the hyaluronic acid fillers, you are not a candidate for Bellafill, because we can’t use Bellafill in the lips. We can use it around the mouth, but we can’t use it in the lips.
The other relative disadvantage to Bellafill is that there is a collagen component to Bellafill. We have to perform a skin test to make sure you aren’t allergic to the collagen component of the Bellafill. A very small amount of patients will be allergic to collagen; that number is probably under 1%. So the majority of patients are candidate for Bellafill and Bellafill can be used to create a long-lasting result of about 5 years and that’s one of the key advantages, again, to Bellafill.
