This is gold, thanks so much. I was 70 kgs and down to 57 kgs in 6 months after stage 3 uterine cancer diagnosis. I juiced a lot, stopped eating meat, went on the Budwig protocol. (The cancer I have Looks like lynch syndrome, so no link to diabetes and obesity). Anyway, I have lost lean muscle, it’s v noticeable, I was concerned about cancer cachexia and now it seems like complete sense. I had a feeling i needed to try a ketogenic diet, so now I will. Also fasting before, during and after chemo infusions. This talk gives me great confidence

Wow. Dr. Dawn Lemanne has such a wealth of information. Thank you for publishing her presentation. I was already convinced that keto was the way to go, given that it has given me stellar weight loss results and health outcomes. She just provided me even more reason to stick with the keto way of eating.

Dr. Lemanne, your talk is so well organized and logical. You covered a lot of ground, and did so at a brisk pace, which was still easy to follow, even for a layperson.

Oh and this is the first time I was told why fasting has a protective effect on cells... because they don't divide. Makes so much sense now -- and makes sense as to why fasting slows aging.

At 42:20 With the greatest respect for your incredible work, I believe your comment “60 days fast is ok for most people with an average BMI” is a bit of a stretch. Many hunger strikers died around this amount of days. This in no way takes anything away from this informative talk.

I wasn't sure about the value of exercise (cardio or resistance) after learning about ketogenisis, but after Dr. Naiman's talk (and reading through some of his references), now I do. I wasn't sure about the value of intermittent fasting until this talk, with Dr. Dawn - thanks! Shortly after I started the keto diet, I found I could work out at the gym, ride my bike for miles and go for unrealistically long periods without food. I showed up at the gym, late one night, on a 36-hour fast, and told some of my gym friends about it, while I was on the treadmill. These are people trying to lose weight - telling me I was nuts. This was a few months ago. One big thing, I hate veggies anyway, but cutting them out completely could be hazardous. My BP started going up. Turns out, not only do you need more salt, you also need more potassium. I was getting all of mine from bread, rice and tators. I've been fasting 12 hours every night. I guess now it's time to add an extra hour, or stop eating earlier. I would like to see more substantiation on the 13-hour fast, though - some study or research that shows the advantages.

Is that possible, that in some cases of chemo or radiation therapy the patients got cured because they had nausea and no appetite. So, cancer was starved to death.
@thetramels4344
@thetramels4344 7 жыл бұрын
This would be a factor on both branches of any results. Meaning if you are comparing radiation alone vs radiation plus keto, presumably, an equal number of people would have those symptoms in both groups.
@m.talmagemoorehead
@m.talmagemoorehead 7 жыл бұрын
Except that the ketogenic cohort, we're told, has less nausea, and overall tolerates chemo and radiation better. So there would likely tend to be fewer nauseated patients in the ketogenic group than in the controls. If ketosis renders cancer cells more vulnerable to chemo and radiation, then it shouldn't probably change the outcome much if the ketosis is a side effect of nausea and decreased appetite (the side effects of chemo and rad therapy).
@CelineNoyce
@CelineNoyce 4 жыл бұрын
@@m.talmagemoorehead I believe it is more important to keep the patient healthy even if it makes no difference in fighting cancer. I think it is pretty obvious that a lot of people that die of "cancer" really die of side effects of the treatment. If we can find ways to keep the human more healthy with the same treatment I think we could gain years of survival.

Sucks that not all oncologists are up to date with fasting and chemo, or that nutritionists and dietitians are still urging patients “to eat whatever they want”. As a caregiver trying to do my best for my loved one, having the oncologist, dietitian, and Cancer Society opposing fasting is very frustrating, or in the least to encourage patients to remove all processed foods and processed sugars, would help caregivers be able to say no, it’s best you eat fruit rather than a rice crispy 🤨 please fix our health system

I'm a NET cancer patient and find it incredibly difficult to find nutrition info that applies to NET and info that is neutral to the influence of capitalism (who funds the info?). I appreciate the broad scope of info covered here. Is there a resource for nutrition as it applies to neuroendocrine tumors? How about info on fasting, keto and/or nutrition in patients who chose not to do chemo? Thank you.

Diss-ect is the British pronunciation, Die-sect is the American pronunciation. Both are correct, it's just a dialectic difference. I don't know why Dr. Dawn says it the British way, maybe she has an English grandma or something.

3:18 20 - 30 years. I'll be dead by then. 6:38 I need to know which type of breast cancer. *Right now!* Where do I find this information? [rips thru all my papers and can't find the ones that tell me what kind of Cancer I have... panics] 9:18 Since the only variable mentioned here was carbs - and they were lowered - the fat on the body could have been a determining factor also. The "WHELS & WINS" ratio implies this. If the fat on the body was consumed to make ketones ("weight loss") so the overall metabolism shifted away from glucose, there was an improvement. _Who's not paying attention?_ 12:31 Insulin Receptor Growth Factor 17:25 OMG I totally guessed it! Cancer is Ancient! It prolly evolved before there was Oxygen on the Planet! 36:10 I'm going to fast 48 hours before Chemo! Thank you!!! 39:00 LOL This is my plan. Exactly. 42:39 I attended a Cancer Support Group Speaker Meeting this last week where a Dietician was advising us to do this. She was 200% Gung-ho on the Cancer is a genetic disease model and made fun of people who were restricting carbs. It was hard for me (a Trauma Survivor) not to burst into tears of fly into a rage at this meeting. The next day my blood sugar was a mess and I was comatose most of the day. Cortisol Poisoning, maybe? Anyone studying that?

i just wonder what would result from a no protein no carb diet. all fats and oils. there would have to be a significant reduction in available fuels.
@CelineNoyce
@CelineNoyce 4 жыл бұрын
I think you would probably get very sick. We need protein. But perhaps for a short term period. Maybe cancer patients should be immediately put on an extended fast 60 days or so. There are drugs on the market that help reduce appetite if the patient can't handle it.

thirty grams of glutamine/day, two days before chemotherapy, on chemo days and on the two days following it, can in addition to protecting gut and prevent neuropathy, also enhances chemotherapy results a proper use and scheduling of cancer promoters can be very beneficial if done properly fasting for a day prior to chemo day and than eating sweet fruits an our or so just before chemotherapy 1st drug is going in, can do the same/ it enhances the intra-cellular absorption of the chemo drugs selectively in the cancer cells kind of a Trojan horse effect

Well presented and valuable information. My question in response to this information is, would periodic fasting and keto or low carb diets reduce the initial formation of many cancers, excluding any need for treatment. My religion asks for us to fast monthly and give the savings to care for the poor and needy. This same religion is known for their good health and longevity, (and if more faithfully practiced the benefits may be more well known). After about 3 years into keto, I believe we will end up knowing that a keto style diet combined with minor calorie restrictions, will leads to avoiding large meals and extended triggered insulin, and this will be the secret to health and longevity. I think some fruit and berries in season may be safety added, if the person is thin, and when the diet includes higher fat, moderate to low protein, and carbs from non starchy vegetables, including limited seeds, grains and nuts. But the most important thing is not to get over weight or, if so, the diet needs further restrictions, such as eliminating the fruit, grains, berries, etc. All good food benefits us if we are working and staying on the thin side, but idleness leads to weight gain and then the rules all change.
@CelineNoyce
@CelineNoyce 4 жыл бұрын
The answer is this isn't known yet. If doctors knew, for sure, what formed cancer they would be in much better shape. They don't know, but they suspect that yes...fasting will help in two ways, 1. reduce insulin and insulin growth factor and 2. reduce protein which triggers proliferation via Mtor. She wasn't joking when she said you would stop eating.

Idleness has nothing to do with weight. I sat at my desk as lost 35kg doing nothing. The only thing that movement will do is help you gain muscle and health but it cannot help you lose weight at any cost because the more you move the more you will eat. Everyone knows if you're not hungry, go for a run.

Please expound on your comment on the ancient lineage of Cancer. . .?
@CelineNoyce
@CelineNoyce 4 жыл бұрын
In Dr. Fung's latest book he argues that cancer could be simply a devolution of the cell. In that we became multicellular from single celled organisms. So cancer could simply be something causing the cell to "devolve" back to this single celled state. Cancer shares a lot of traits with single celled organisms. He argues cancer has always been with us because it is part of our cells.

I would assume starve the cancer by lack of carbs or starve it by lack of keytones and attack it with fasting
@CelineNoyce
@CelineNoyce 4 жыл бұрын
As she noted here cancer is too smart. If you starve it on one level it will just find a new fuel. Cancer can use both glucose, ketones AND glutamine. As this doctor said, "starving cancer' only slows it / makes it more weak. There are some experiments with combining starving the cancer and then attacking it with oxygen which has been shown that it can cause it to die. The important part of this treatment is that it keeps the patient in good shape.
