Been trying to find a play through of one of my favorite memories of games as a child. I played this for probably 100+hours and never got very far. Rip batteries in my game boy. Oh that music though damn good for game boy.

I never played much on any iteration of the Game Boy when I was younger, but I'm rather intrigued by this era. Like that the developers _could_ just make a fun little game about a Frankenstein monster exploring a castle to reassemble/resurrect his girlfriend. And the fact that you'd have to read the manual to know any of that. XD Love it.

Funny also that the game is called dr Franken bit you never see it..dr franken(bone)is dead and only his coffin is visible

I love this game. Really good graphics, atmosphere and music. When I played this as kid, it was very hard because I didn't know english yet, so item descriptions didn't help. I did ask for item names though from my sis, and of course I could see from the picture what the item is so it wasn't all hopeless. I slowly made progress and one day I could beat the whole game. Later on game became a lot easier because I could understand descriptions/hints of all items, and I somewhat remembered level map. But map is so huge that it's very hard to remember every room. And those dark areas were a bit scary when lantern oil run out, especially when I got lost in the maze :P

ilmothedude i can understand you ih. ..as a kid the maze was scary as hell...and so hard but at the end i have complete the game..in 2005,after 12 years

@@paolotondo2463 Good job on even doing that. I don't think i could do that even now at 39.. i played this when i was about 9-10 years old. I couldn't get anywhere. I remember buying new batteries, and dedicated and entire sunday, to play until the batteries ran out or i beat it. The batteries went flat. I think i got about 30-40% into the game. So incredibly hard to remember that map. It does not show very well that when you press up or down to go through a door or "exit", that moves you around the level floor that you are on. But when you go through the roof or down through the floor, you move up or down a level, and then the map changes to the next map floor. Also, even if the clues and hints come with the objects, they still don't provide much help. Because remembering all of the room names (well, tower, stream etc) is next to impossible. If one only could move the cursor around in the map screen, and see the room names, then that would help a lot. It is a decent game. It just lacks a few things to make it great.

Interesting, my version does not have the item descriptions nor the room names. Ought to look into that. Edit: The USA version doesn't have room/item descriptions, the EU version does.

This game was very hard but without the item description is even harder..anyway a great game,i have the EU version ( the original)

I ended up getting lost on the map several times playing this game, the castle connections gets confusing several times. I think it was a good idea to reduce the speed of the character compared to his nes counterpart, that added to the dark atmosphere and its theme gives it a special touch, although I would have preferred more variety in the soundtrack. Several times I felt the control rough when trying to move around small platforms and reach certain places, apart from the enemies respawning in short period of time after killing them and close to the character, several times you have to take obligatory damage from the enemies. I can understand to a certain point why people have some kind of affection for this game, after all, is one of the few metroidvanias in the game boy, and it has a good atmosphere with detailed graphics, but if you try to play it without a guide like I did, the game quickly becomes tedious. Good guide by the way, I would have liked to seen it in the first place haha.

Fun fact: loved this game soundtrack already as kid, and kept listening title tune (Bach) many times. As you stay on title screen, demo gameplay starts running at random location in castle. I noticed you could actually control franky in demo mode to go up into doors, but nothing else. You could control franky to go so destructive route in demo mode with so many enemies that he would lose all energy and die. That was pretty neat thing to achieve! Anyone else did this?

@@paolotondo2463 If you google Dr franken gameboy booklet, or something like that, you will find the little flyer that came with the game. It is really cool, explains everything in detail ^^ Dr Franken(bone) is also magically transformed to be smaller than he actually is, which explains why some of the monsters/ghosts are much bigger than him and the size of the woman he is trying to ressurrect ^^ Yeah, i never knew who the "baron" was either xD

That ending sequence is quite morbid and scary ^^ but still happy and exciting at the same time, since he's getting his girlfriend back to life ^^ This game is just such a huge range of things. It's both good and bad, boring and funny, easy but difficult, at the same time.
