Күн бұрын

Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school and internal medicine at the University of Toronto before finishing his nephrology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai hospital.
He now has a practice in Ontario, Canada where he uses his Intensive Dietary Management program to help all sorts of patients, but especially those suffering from the two big epidemics of modern times: obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Fung uses innovative solutions to these problems, realising that conventional treatments are not that effective in helping people.

I have been trying Dr Fung's ideas for 5 weeks now (low carb low sugar / 20-4 Fasting). I am amazed by the effectiveness of Intermittent Fasting, not only have I lost 14 lbs but I was taking 136 units of insulin a day and I am now COMPLETELY OFF insulin and my blood sugars which averaged around 9.5 are now averaging 5.4. Dr Fung I applaud you !!! Thank you for this wonderful change in my life!!!

Dr. Fung's idea doesn't always work so well when you have hypothyroidism and insulin resistant combined. A lot of women gain weight with hypothyroidism and become type II diabetic. My mom is one of them and only eats 2 meals a day; couldn't lose weight. She is on an iodine protocol (100mg of Lugol's iodine and certain vitamins) that I found from Dr. David Brownstein and Dr. Jorge Flechas, that helps both hypothyroidism and type II diabetic. I found this protocol last year. She's been able to lower her insulin medication, because the iodine has helped lower her glucose & A1C by removing toxins and improve her hypothyroidism. This has helped her to lose 13lbs, so far. Unlike me, if I eat 2 or less meals a day, I gain weight.

@@pattywedge5489 I have coffee with cream and no sweetener in the morning to maintain my sanity (good coffee is my one addiction, and I'm okay with it, lol), and nothing until lunch, my biggest meal, then eat a lighter dinner, then nothing again until lunch the next day. It takes a while of getting used to, and you may want to have a fatty low carb snack you like available to you while getting used to the routine (I just bought "keto fat bombs" and kept a couple in my purse. Saved me when the supermarket was handing out ice cream samples, I had a sanctioned 50 calorie fatty snack bite from my purse in stead). I've lost 30 pounds in 6 months. I did do a 24-48 hour fast on average once a month at the beginning, but I found out I was pregnant recently, so I'm just sticking to eating what and when I can as I cope with morning sickness. The plan is to not gain a ton of weight while pregnant (going by the weight gain recommendations for overweight and obese women), so it's easier to resume the two meals a day routine after baby is born and keep losing weight.

TODAY, is the day to write a comment. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. FUNG! Since the beginning of January 2020, my body went totally nuts and I put an extra 16 Kg in 1.5 month!! Beside feeling really sick and generally like crap. Added to the covid19 "thing" and some infections just added to dark the spectrum. My doctor was very concerned, but not more than me. The downward spiral seemed unstoppable! All felt and looked so grim, that I had a very serious conversation with my wife and daughter. To explain about some paper works and other matters, just in case... That's how serious it was. :-( My trousers went 3 numbers up!! To the point that one day went to a meeting with the shirty hanging out of my trousers. Simply because I couldn't tight them up! Shortly after, I had to cancel a meeting. Because I didn't had any pants that fitted! In one word, awful! Meanwhile a few months ago found the work of Dr. Fung, Keto, omad, intermittent fasting and so on. So TODAY, I write because I'm wearing my old pants, for the first time since January!! :-) I'm not there 100%, YET! But it's getting close by the day and feeling way way better. BTW type 2 diabetes, gone. High blood pressure, gone, cholesterol gone... Today is the day! Cheers all

I feel good, healthy, high energy, good gut, and have been told that I haven't aged. Thank you Dr. Fung.

It takes true genius to always keep learning and growing in your craft! Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqodZSar9R4qNU Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJeUm6qDl9uBrtk The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfPXqGfoc2KgsU When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpa0epSLa9yjaNE Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4OwaXqIr9h8f8k Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJamkJp_h5eNZ5Y Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZK1faZ5pd2sadE Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHu4daiZd7ypatU Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. I have been doing KETO, IF and OMAD or 2MAD for 2 months also a few complete 24 hr fasts thrown in. I have lost (MAYBE) 4 lbs tops. I have not weighed myself I'm going by how my clothes fit. I had planned to weigh myself when my "skinny" jeans became looser in the waist and legs. That never happened. On the flip side of the coin, my husband, who also needed to lose around 30lbs same as me, started keto with me and has even cheated and ate candy and corn on the cob a few times and the fat is falling off him. He has lost at least 20 lbs so far and his clothes are hanging on him. Meanwhile I still look like the Pillsbury Dough Girl 8:/......My daughter's boyfriend's 20th bday was yesterday and she got him a huge chocolate cake. It was sitting on the counter of my kitchen and at first, I covered it with a towel because chocolate plus cake for me is like crack for a crack addict. The cake finally won after I looked in the mirror at my manly looking protruding belly and huge 41" lower circumference that refuses to budge. My waist used to be tiny, I could not believe how small my tops and pants were after cleaning out a closet a few months ago. My 20 year old daughter thought they were the clothes of a young girl. Too small even for her and she is skinny. And this was when I was in my 30s!! I believe they are putting chemicals in the food to make us have metabolic disorder so that the fat on our body takes on a life of it's own and puts out hormones that prevent weight loss. It seems to effect mostly women because of our lack of testosterone or muscle. Anyhoo, I ate the DAMN CAKE!! I felt rebellious and GOOD doing it too!! Not losing weight after all that effort makes the cake look all the better! I mean why not? It's like i'm just spinning my wheels for nothing,.....I thought by now (March) I'd be back in my size 12 jeans and shorts (size 10 is my goal and I'm talking Old School size 10, not today's vanity size nonsense). I'm gonna keep trying because my only other option is to go back to eating their purposely poisoned Franken food. Now I know why the "kosher elite" like to use the phrase "Let them Eat Cake".....Bastards.

@@reesedaniel5835 stop feeling guilty and get a check up from a doctor. Mine thought i had cushings. It turned out that I didn’t however, i learned a lot about the importance of going to a check-up and to get your hormones tested as a lady. It might not be your fault, but some hormones not working properly inside. Get yourself checked out and you’ll at least know if you’re struggling for nothing. I tried to loose weight with nutritionists and diets for 2 years, i only gained more. I got myself checked up, found out my insulin resistance was over the roof and now i am on IF and a low glycemic index diet. I lost 2 kgs in 1 week by following this and taking walks out in nature. I don’t drink alcohol unless it’s a special occasion, don’t smoke and always loved fruits. What got me to gain weight was stress initially, then i went to a nutritionist and i started eating 3 meals per day with 2 snacks as recommended by the doctor instead of fasting as i previously did. I kept on gaining weight. Get your hormones checked up and then try if. In about a week or two your sugar cravings will go away. Fingers crossed you will succeed to have the same result as your partner.

Gosh this is so enlightening. I’ve been watching Dr Fung for the last few weeks. I have his Fasting book from the library. This explains so much. I lost 50lbs several years ago (with probably 30 more to go). I did it on Weight Watchers. It’s the first time I’ve ever been successful. Then, I started getting so hungry. I couldn’t figure out why I was so completely in the zone for probably 1 1/2 years and then fell off the wagon. Could not get back on. Then I got pregnant. Now I’m probably 60lbs heavier than that and just can’t figure this out! I’ve tried intermittent fasting and feel great but something always gets me out of the zone again. My whole point in writing is...it’s really interesting to hear Dr Fung say “this isn’t your fault, your not a glutinous pig”. Although I know I’ve made horrible choices, I know that. I know this is partly my fault in a huge way on a certain level. And I’m someone that would always say “I don’t blame my weight on others, I don’t blame it on emotions etc. I just like to eat and eat too much. Period. And don’t have control”. I feel like this kind of video gives me hope to try. It’s hard to lose weight, gain weight and get the courage to start again. You just keep thinking, “I’ll fail again”. Thanks for the video.

I knew that insulin plays a big role in weight changes but I didn't think it plays that much of a role. It's pretty much the only cause (besides cortisol) for any weight gain and overrides the significance of calories completely. I think that's amazing and we need more people like you who look at things deeper and more scientific than just from the surface like you said with the proximate and the ultimate cause. Thanks for sharing this Dr. Fung!

I happened to come across Dr. Fung's advice and information after I wasn't feeling so well and I started noticing all these people who are bloated and waterlogged they looked exactly like me. I knew I had to make a change I don't want all the added diseases symptoms from excess weight. So after having some heart palpitations and excess water in my legs I decided to go for it. I first started with intermittent fasting and then I did a water fast for 3 days and have been juicing for a week. I have lost 12 pounds exactly since the second week of May 2018. I understand it might be water weight none-the-less I lost the 12 lb when nothing else would work. I am exercising and continuing with the intermittent fasting and making sure that I eliminate as many process carbohydrates as possible.. I'm not starving and I feel that as I continue this I will create more mass muscle mass and finally eliminate a lot of the fat. I won't have that puffy exhausted person look

This is the quote from the textbook "There are also many programs that recommend specific food combinations or unusual sequences for eating, but none of these approaches has any proven merit." What Dr Fung says at 4:12 is taken out of context, I believe Joslin was talking about specific food combinations and not caloric deficit. The book states a couple of sentences before this "Many different diets that provide 800 to 1,000 kcal per day are in common use, and with adequate compliance by the patient, these diets should result in weight loss."

At 26 y/o, 5'9", and 230 lbs, I can definitely say 23:1 fasting isn't hard after your first week, and as long as you know the tricks to killing your hunger (black coffee, a couple salt rocks on the tongue), you can get through it without much difficulty. Sure, swapping to a paleo or keto-style diet on top of that can be psychologically challenging, but I would say everyone should learn how to cook for themselves. And with only having one meal a day, your food costs go down.

I agree with ALL it. Fasting is key. The only real issue then is, it STILL takes willpower to fast. One must STILL not eat for certain periods of time. Yes, the answer is simple: don't eat. Deplete your "freezer." It's the application of this remedy of fasting that is, again, the problem.

I'm a 53 year old male. (picture is my wife). I had diabetes II for 7 years and I've been fasting for 2 years now. My weight was from 215 to 168 lbs. My metformin is now down from 5 to 2 tabs a day. My AIC is always between 5.6 and 6.8. I eat non-stop from 6pm to 10pm daily. I eat anything. Sweets and anything and a lot, really a lot. My doctor says she don't like what I'm doing but all my numbers are OK so she said do whatever you're doing. Now I eat 3 meals per day on weekends. I am hooked to this diet and I can't imagine stopping because everyday I look forward to 6pm because I will eat whatever and I don't count how much or what it is. It's a daily feast. I hope someone tries this because it is very enjoyable. I'm loving my diabetes. It made me eat whatever I want.

I started Intermittent Fasting. I rested the whole day. Within the first 20 hours my blood pressure shot up to 171/98. After taking a pill to decrease my BP,, I ate and slept. Next morning felt good and continued fasting. Iexercized moderately. Within 20-21 hours my blood pressure increased again to 152/101 and had to take a pill as well as eating to stop the headache and red eyes. 59 years old, usually elevated blood pressure to 130 plus, sleep 5-6 hours per day. In the morning of the third day, about 11 hours from takind pill and eating, blood pressure at 135/74. Perhaps you could enlighten us with this aspect of fasting? From a small internet search I read that fasting causes an increase in blood pressure to: 1. People with hypertension 2. People who wake up before sunrise. Is this consistant with your model?

In terms of the laws of thermodynamics, there's another complication which affects the "calories in equation" - namely "how bioavailable are the calories I'm eating"? How do we measure the amount of calories in a given food? Typically, we use a "bomb calorimeter" - which is a fancy name for "burn the food until it's completely used up all of its internal chemical energy, and measure the energy it gives off by seeing how much it heats up a sample of water. 1 degree Celsius change for 1 cc of water = 1 calorie". Several people have asked the obvious question "how do we know that being able to produce a calorie of heat when burned translates into a calorie of available energy for the body?" I'm sure, as an extreme, we could all imagine some kind of flammable fuel that the human body has no ability to process for food at all - i.e. zero bioavailability. More prosaically, we might ask if the oils in a peanut will give our bodies the ability to do the same amount of work as the equivalent in "calories" of sugar? Finally, even supposing the two food types can both be utilised for energy, does it necessarily mean that they can both be stored as body fat? The obvious case for carbohydrates is "they boost insulin, and insulin pulls sugar from the blood into the fat cells." Fine. So what's the equivalent if someone eats a zero carb meal with protein and fat? Can it be stored as body fat at all? If so, is the efficiency reduced at all? There are many more questions I would love to ask Dr Fung regarding this.

I love Dr Fung but isnt fasting still CICO and caloric reduction because fasting for 24hrs is functionally 100% calorie reduction. Or is saying CICO as a specific diet measure without fasting, so keeping insulin spiked throughout the day, is the problem.

So explain this: my father was diagnosed with diabetes type-I when he was 30 y.o. He started injecting insulin in high doses (100 units a day) because in those days (>45 years ago) it was very hard to keep his sugar levels stable. Due to the high doses he also had to eat a lot and he did eat a lot and very healthy: no sugar, whole wheat bred, low fat, hardly any alcohol etc. but he lost 20% of his body weight right after starting with insulin, like within 1-2 weeks. He fought the rest of his life against low body weight until he died at the age of 70 y.o. His brother was diagnosed with diabetes type-II at the age of 60. His brother started injecting insulin but kept on eating sugar. He was always very low weight for his height but didn't gain a gram of weight after starting with insulin. My sister was diagnosed with diabetes type-I on the age of 40. Like all of us she was also quite thin. After taking insulin she never gained any weight, nor lost weight. So apparently there are people not gaining weight at all when using insulin and some even lose a lot of weight when taking insulin. I am not questioning what dr Jason Fung says though, I think he is highly intelligent and by far most people gain weight after taking insulin.

1). Type 1 is different than type 2 2). It's not entirely about insulin, but also insulin sensitivity In type 1 diabetes, a person does not produce insulin. In type 2, a person is insulin resistant. Their cells do not react appropriately to insulin. A type 1 diabetic can be properly insulin sensitive, which means that their cells react the way they should to insulin. Of course, enough external insulin given often enough could also make them grow fatter, but apparently that was not the case with your familly. Type 1 and type 2 are completely different diseases, and I have no idea why they're both called diabetes.

Whilst I know that this approach works for weight loss, I am still struggling with the science of it. He says that reduced calories does not work and fasting is the answer however, it is almost impossible to fast without reducing calories, so how do you separate the two in order to know which one is causing the weight loss.
@ilanamenachedwek7561
@ilanamenachedwek7561 4 жыл бұрын
I believe its because when he says "reduced calories diet" you are still eating 3-6 times a day, and every time you eat (even in really small portions!!!) = insulin goes up = fat storage increases. When you fast you give your body the time to decrease insulin, and glucagon (another hormone) can do its job, that is to take the fat out of the cells and use it for energy.
