Proud New Orleans expat here, just asked my 8 year old kiddo who was playing, and without even looking at the screen, he said “Dat’s Dr. John!” (With a ‘duh’ look on his face) ⚜️

New Orleans jazz fest. the rain was pouring down, thousands stood there waiting, thankful for the rain because it was hot that day, and in walks dr john and he says if you are crazy enough to stay I am crazy enough to play,,

Every master throughout history has taken a simple theme and then embellished it with endless variety, imbued with a unique spirit, all the while making it seem effortless. All anyone else can hope to do is copy them and achieve a tiny fraction of their original organic improvisation. Thank you Dr. John!

Dr. John has such EFFORTLESS control, rock solid timing, and SLIPPERY transitions. I saw him live probably 18 years ago or so with my Dad. We couldn't understand a single word he spoke, but who needs words when you can speak like this ; )

@eliotguerin1922 жыл бұрын
@@therabidscorpion Yep he did. He kept playing some guitar, but after his finger was shot (!), piano seemed easier. Most of us probably would’ve given up then, but as a teen who was born and raised with reverence toward music, and who didnt have many other options due to a checkered legal past from his youth, it was inevitabe Doc would find any way he could to continue with music

RIP Mac. I was hooked to Dr John's music from the moment I heard, and watched, him play and sing "Such a Night" on "The Last Waltz" film. An accomplished musician, most of all, a superb pianist/keyboard player, Dr John was an outstanding interpreter of Blues and Cajun music, but also equally at home with jazz and swing. I loved this man, and always will. God bless you Mac.

I shared this clip with an old friend who is a long-time jazz/blues fanatic, and he replied that it was dull, repetitive and didn't "go anywhere" or build into anything interesting. As a pianist myself I feel it grooves along nicely with interesting little peaks and teases, and resolves well. Just wondered what you other musicians or jazz listeners think? Am I just a deluded fan who's hearing something that's not there? 🤔

This was a DEMO of SOME of his devices on a simple chord progression, for the benefit of us viewers. Catching up to a bunch of these is nice work, to play em or just listen. His body of work is loaded with involved stuff on many levels.
