I think Dr. LaPook expressed himself a bit unclearly on that last question, so let me just clarify: serum with antibodies from people who have recovered could possibly be useful for people who currently are infected and ill, the antibodies in that serum fighting the virus as soon as they enter your bloodstream. But antibodies degenerate pretty quickly if you don't have your own immune cells to replenish the stock, so that serum wouldn't grant you immunity for any extended period of time, it doesn't function as a vaccine because antibodies don't train your immune cells to produce that antibody, only the antigens from the actual virus will do that, that's why we still need the vaccine.

I've been trying to explain that for a while but people don't seem to catch on to the concept that the antigens in plasma are impermanent.

Some caveats. The SARS vaccines were never actually approved as the virus went away before widespread testing was done. We don't know whether they worked on SARS, we don't know whether they had serious side effects. We also don't know whether they would give the same type of immunity as surviving the SARS virus gave, which was temporary (only 2 to 3 years). MERS immunity is even shorter, despite being a far deadlier virus.

The crazy thing is, other countries are questioning the WHO and their closeness with China. Canada is, especially the premier of Ontario. Anonymous released a video about it as well. But I personally am on the fence, it's such an important role when implemented properly. Check out Pandemic on Netflix it follows a WHO team treating Ebola in Africa and the pandemic response team that Trump disbanded. And that the virus can come back in recovered patients. It's by far the nastiest virus we've had to deal with in a century - or more.
@jessn.38514 жыл бұрын
Not everybody develops enough antibodies to prevent reinfection. Some people get chicken pox multiple times and never become immune. It's the same for vaccines, they can't protect everyone to the same extent because it depends on that person's immune response. That's why even if everyone gets an illness and recovers or everyone gets vaccinated, a virus can still infect people and spread around. And that's not counting the silent carriers who gained immunity without symptoms but continue to shed the virus.
