Lex Fridman PhD, is a research scientist at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), working on robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and human-robot interactions. He is also the host of the Lex Fridman Podcast where he holds conversations with academics, entrepreneurs, athletes and creatives. Here we discuss humans, robots, and the capacity they hold for friendship and love. Dr. Fridman also shares with us his unique dream for a world where robots guide humans to be the best versions of themselves, and his efforts to make that dream a reality.

You had me choking back tears on my drive back from vacation. I lost my best buddy Gus last October. I still feel his absence. Listening to how much of your daily routine involved Costello, I know he was your wingman. I curse my shitty sound system, as I never could hear his snoring. There are no words to make this any easier for you. Grief comes like a tsunami. Overtime they come at broader intervals. But I've found their might has yet to diminish -- as they're the counterpart of the love we felt, still feel.

I was given lithium for bipolar disorder but found an alternative myself. The alternative,valproate, works, but what about the chronic kidney disease that lithium caused? I am almost at the dialysis stage now but I would have been dead m and my doctor agreed.

Hearing you two talk about your dogs was really healing for me. I lost my sweet namah dog a couple of years ago and I I was right there with you and for you. All the words both of you said could have been straight out of a conversation with me as well… the abscesses, the neuropathy…I was fortunate enough to have had an angeling ceremony out in the desert with two very kind veterinarians.. and one full rainbow… the stark reality of the silence coming home to a house without him for the first time was the most pressing… and to be honest for a week after he passed it felt like a bit of a relief for me.. it was an emotional rollercoaster seeing and feeling his decline… and then after that week of space I missed him terribly and I wonder if I could have let him live any longer, but his spirit does live on right beside me, as does yours live by you in a way and that energy will come back to you one day in another form. I so appreciate listening to you and Lex. Right there with you guys. So here for it.

I often download every single podcast epidose of dr Andrew as soon as it pops up on evening monday( I live in VietNam) , hearing costello's snore is like white noise, gently put me to sleep. You don't know how much I apprexiate wholeheartedly your works. I lost my dog 2 years ago due to the thieves. The most painful and unbearable part is that she was pregnant. That really hit me to the deep innermost, I would wake up in middle of the nights, found my self cringed and crying a lot. The discussion of the death of these two men’s dogs was touching. The fact that Andrew Huberman volunteered that he cries (or wakes crying) after the recent loss of Costello was so powerful. It takes a strong, centered, confident man to say such words... though lilely 90%-99% of people can relate to those words (but wouldn’t say them as readily, unwilling to be vulnerable). Men being human is a sign of great strength not the reverse.

Guys, thank you. Idk why I didn't want to watch this episode, even watched other ones before this one(im going in order of oldest to newest). But once I was engaged in the subject, I quickly became one of my favorites. Dr. Huberman im very sorry to hear about Costello, I had a bulldog myself, and the way you describe him, is very similar to my boy Rilley. Hearing the both of you speak how you guys cared for and grew deep emotional connections with you pets really stuck with me. I was in the middle of painting a room, and I found myself crying like a baby thinking about my dog when he passed away. On another topic, I clicked a lot with Mr. Fridman. Hearing his upbringing in Russia really resonated with me in the way that I grew up in Ecuador. Ecuador also has a LOT of sad music, the school I was at was super strenuous, hell, I remember having so much homework that I'd had to stay up doing the homework till 12-2 am. And we left school at 12pm.

I just caught up with this episode! I’m in tears about Costello! My bulldog passed a few years ago. He was slowing down for about a month then one day the look in his eyes changed and told me I needed to let him go. I related very much to you saying Costello has a change in his eyes . So sorry for your loss.

I have felt this way my entire life and always felt like the "weirdo" that would never fit in b/c I HAVE that same sentiment of just wanting to love others and spread joy. I can't tell you how many times I have been asked, "How do you feel that way?"and being accused of lying or pretending to feel like I'm blissed out b/c they can't understand it. I finally had to learn that it's truly a GIFT that I am able to see humanity and other people's criticisms with rose colored glasses and be PROUD of who I am, I feel LUCKY to be me! 💖

Im so sorry about Homer-and Costello. He will never leave your heart or your memories, Dr Huberman, and the quick, unexpected tears will catch you unawares for a long time.That still happens to me after 6 years when I recall the love and trust in Shadow’s eyes.as he went to sleep for the last time. That ability to grieve for our pets is what makes us truly human.

I would have never thought I'd have any interest in learning about A.I. But Lex is so much more than a brilliant mind, he's got a brilliant soul as well. To want to help find a cure for loneliness in a robot is ingenious. I kept thinking about having a refrigerator that would say, "Missi, are you having a rough night? Do you need to talk through something? This is the 3rd time you've been back to find something to eat in the last 30 minutes. I think maybe you're trying to fill a void." I have a dog, Ted, who is my whole world (and had a hard time driving and crying at the same time when Andrew was talking about Costello. I can relate so well to everything he said - even about the peeing). But as much as I can talk some things through with Ted about how I'm feeling, he's only able to help by being a really, really good listener. He certainly fills some of that emptiness I feel, but having a conversation with someone who understands me, is completely objective and can challenge my ideas, without agenda, would be incredible. Thank you, both, for all you do to make this world a better place. (p.s. please forgive the familiarity by using your first names.)
