I listened to some conference of Dr Fontana since his from my country. It's very interesting the studies they are doing about calorie restriction and fasting. However... He's not vegan or whole food, he's for a limited animal protein assumption.

It's a shame he doesn't get in the details of the "healthy" diet. I would love to know his thoughts.

He likes caloric restriction with nutrient sufficiency. In his studies he includes fish because he likes protein and omega 3 plus plant based. But not the other animal proteins. Unfortunately he has not recognized the more recent mice studies that show caloric restriction in mammals functions because of protein and fat restriction. The longest lived mice were high carbohydrate low protein low fat and actually chunkier. Caloric restriction was not beneficial to this group but only to the higher protein mice. But generally Fontana is supportive of McDougall diet but would add fish and caloric restrict. I believe the mice studies are in line with McDougall whereas Fontana is still hanging onto older caloric restriction ideas.

delita tyrez Dr Fontana may have changed his position now. Go to his youtube channel and ask him. He is not active but he does answer questions once in a while. Regarding Omega 3, Vegsource will be doing an important talk on subject soon. As far as diet and longevity, this is the most important study i’ve seen in a long time www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550413114000655.

I completely agree. Doctors should be the first people to follow their own advice, considering they die at close to the same rates of heart disease as the population. Doctors heal thyself.

I was surprised to hear him say that those of us not wearing bathing suits in California (you lucky dawgs) should take a Vitamin D supplement, when the latest recommendations, including Dr. McDougall's (most recently: www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2015nl/mar/vitamind.htm), say not to. I don't take Vit D, but the topic is of interest to me now more than ever since I just moved to the Seattle area in July.. Other than that point of confusion, I agree with Dr. Fontana whole-heartedly, and really enjoyed listening to this interview - and to his beautiful Italian accent. :-)

I heard tanning beds are beneficial in northern areas.

+Julian loza I did that one winter, but think the skin cancer risk from them is too great. I'm thinking an annual winter vacation to Maui is the answer. ;-)

It is outrageous that this is not taught in detail in medical schools.. In fact, there is a constant silent battle between doctors and dietitians/nutritionists since doctors do not acknowledge the importance of nutrition... Then of course, we have the use of drugs that generates millions of dollars in revenue..So where can we start with this? Even patients want a quick fix or some drugs which substitute the changes in eating habits that they need to address.. Finally, as with most things there is the psychological factor, the emotional eaters and so on and so forth.
