I used to think, every time I got a bad head cold or influenza, my appetite would disappear for days. I could drink water but even thinking about food just made me nauseous. Now I know why. My body knows exactly what it was doing. All this time my mother would tell me to just "eat something, even a little bit" and I could feel my body saying no. It all makes sense now.

@@JeninNH except that in the modern, 1st work. hunger is usually an indication of addiction since most people are eating something every couple hours - and the food they eat is driving hunger. those protein bards are NOT helping hunger subside. and their hunger comes up after 4 hours of not eating. And even if they got to 12 hours and felt hungry their body is most likely not actually hungry if they had been feeding it constantly prior to that. in fact, if you can get past 24 hours or more your hunger feeling will subside thanks to the Leptin hormone.

I first saw Prof. Valter Longo in the BBC program, "Eat, Fast, and Live Longer" and learned about intermittent fasting. Because my thyroid was removed in 1971 I am forced to go further to regenerate a thyroid, and have to date put in over 8000 hours of two week long dryfasting sessions, and am now off thyroid replacements. It took dedicated dryfasting for me to realize what bad condition my body was in beyond simply the thyroid issue. I am now in day 21 of this dryfast, maximizing autophagy to allow the body to remove whatever does not serve it and restore fluidity to the great lymphatic system. The Nobel Prize in 2016 was awarded for studies into autophagy.

Would be interesting to do a study with people from 2 groups -- one group of people that are accustomed to fasting and a separate group that haven't done much fasting before the experiment. Reasoning would be whether stress hormones play a factor in effectiveness of starting to fast until the conclusion of the experiment. People accustomed to fasting probably wouldn't as worried about their next meal and dealing with hunger pangs and so anxiety about something they've never tried before would be less and could result in significantly different results between the two groups. Some people fast as part of their religious beliefs and have been doing it since an early age so it isn't so new to them.

A couple years back I underwent a 22-day, water-only fast. Not an easy thing to do, particularly the first 5-7 days. It's nice to know that it gets easier as days pass, as toxins are removed from the body. I actually felt invulnerable from disease and infection after the 10-day mark and was feeling quite good overall. Most importantly, is what foods and quantities you consume when breaking the fast. Overall, it was a very healing experience.

Somewhere in the litany of things he said I saw that quote attributed to him. And if I did say it first. I would definitely take the credit for it. Why give it to anyone else.

Fasting should be a natural process. Babies refuse to eat when they're sick; so do animals. Adults are the 'only species' who keeps on feeding even when they're I'll. I do periodic 'extended fasting' of ten to thirteen days (only water, no food) and am always amazed at the level of energy that the body generates. I'm not on any medication and do 6 000 steps every alternate day. Thank God for a healthy body.

In India, every common person (specially hindu's) does fasting as spiritual practice and know that it gives health benefits. Britisher's in early centuries made fun of hindu culture. Now when I see every new developments in health industry they are simply pointing out ancient Indian practices. may be it is time to revisit all the ancient indian practices and research on it.
@beckyb89296 жыл бұрын
well do the research and report on it! I usually don't pay any attention to people who point to the wisdom of people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. As if by simply living a long time ago they knew something we don't. They were people who lived a lifespan same as we do now, without the benefits of structured research, studies etc. So I am not going to go drink some tea made out of a bunch of Chinese herbs or whatever just because someone says they worked for some villagers who lived five hundred years ago. Let's do the research and decide which practices are beneficial and which are not. As in, this guy here actually did the research, identified biological reasons and showed in different organisms that it worked. To me, that is proof, and years of hard work to show it. Long live science!

The only problem I have with India is that the doctors there tend to cause a lot of Empty Nose Syndrome. Reducing the nasal turbinates even a little can cause this horrible illness, but for some reason the doctors there tend to take out more tissue than average.
