For revenue to go up after a tax break, the economy has to grow by a factor of x/y, where x is the old tax rate and y is the new tax rate. That is the simple version for flat taxes at least, the real formula is much more complicated because of graduated income brackets, and because rich people don't spend the same percentage of their money as poorer people. However, the basic rules still apply. This kind of growth is a completely unrealistic expectation. The lower x is, the more the economy would have to grow for any kind of tax cut to balance out the revenue. It just isn't realistic to expect a tax cut to lead to tax growth unless everyone in the country is paying over 50%. In practice, the top tax brackets could be much higher (possibly over 90%) without a loss in revenue, because most of the circulation in the economy is driven by the poor and middle class rather than the rich. Cutting taxes for the wealthy rarely leads to additional spending.
@NotYourBusiness-bp2qnАй бұрын
Not really. The hope is corporations will give up on using tax heavens and off shore companies they use to avoid paying the high taxes if they think the hassle is not worth it when those taxes are lowered to a "reasonable" level. How well that works is debatable but that's the intent.
@chrishakala528Ай бұрын
@@NotYourBusiness-bp2qn That's the kind of thing you hire IRS agents for, and the IRS tends to bring in multiple times its own budget. But no, the concept of the laffer curve that this stems from has nothing to do with people violating tax laws. That is a legal issue that exists regardless of the tax rate. The concept of the laffer curve is that there is a point where raising taxes will constrict the economy to such an extent that tax revenue is actually lower. The problem is that laffer never did the work to figure put where that point is, because that was not his goal. He just wanted to provide the excuse to lower taxes, even though taxes are far too low for the concept to even apply. To be blunt, if taxes on regular people are less than 50%, then cutting taxes is not going to lead to enough economic growth to offset the loss in revenue.
@NotYourBusiness-bp2qnАй бұрын
@@chrishakala528 I think I know a bit more about the subject than you. The Laffer curve is a theoretical abstraction but in some countries revenue went up significantly when taxes were lowered. Mostly it was the result of the underground economy surfacing. This is admittedly less likely in a country like the US where the "underground" economy is not as prevalent but tax avoidance is. And I don't mean tax evasion, that is illegal and can be addressed via enforcement agencies like the IRS. Tax avoidance is when companies set up a infrastructure that uses legal loopholes to avoid paying taxes as much as possible. This is legal and the IRS can't do anything about it. Even when it is a dance on the edge of the law and sometimes across it the corporations have way more legal firepower than the IRS, their teams of Ivy League lawyers wipe the floor with the mediocre guys that are willing to work a government job. The thing is such complex schemes are a pain in the behind for corporations and if taxes are low enough they might be willing to start paying taxes instead of an army of tax lawyers and off shore accountants.
@chrishakala528Ай бұрын

When you have money you have some degree of protection from the injustices of life. The more money you have the more you can protect yourself, not only from some injustices but you can extend your influence to control others, change the environment you are in, avoid critism, generally surround yourself with only the good things. Now some things just can't be avoided and such is the nature of life. But having and controlling money is a BIG cushion. These people do not need governement. People without means or money are much less able to do this. They can't avoid the injustices layed on them in most of natural life and often are so busy just trying to survive they wear out their life and times just tring to provide the necessities for themselves and if they are parents, for their children. These people (remember WE THE PEOPLE) need the combined effort of society to offer some degree of protection, This is called Government. If it is representative, truly representative, their NEEDS can be addressed allowing them some opportunity to pursuit happiness (see DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE). The only people I ever here complaining about too much government are people with money and means and those non-thiinking people parroting them. And to the so-called Christians amoung us, if you want to truly do the work of God stand with the people like your Lord and Master Jesus Christ did and set an example and not with the 1%.
