Dr Reese Performs An Emergency Brain Procedure | Chicago Med

When a patient has been left long over due a check Dr Reese notices major complications with his brain and has to act fast.

I like the spirit of Dr choi who owned the responsibility of the situation and helped the student docter though it was a grave mistake ...but it saved the life...because anyways that man had stopped breathing ...so why not a shot of chance ....to revive the patient...

What's illegal is illegal. The reason why people allow student doctors to be in hospitals, for learning purposes. And if they were to do a medical procedure like a surgery, it must be under a senior or one of the doctor's supervision. Basically, student doctors are not allowed to perform surgeries without supervision of an senior or one of the professionals, is simply because if it is done wrongly, causing injury or death, the blame will be on the hospital allowing it to happen. Saved a life or not Dr. Reese and Dr. Choi could've got into trouble. And since Dr. Choi is an active reserve, he could fall into bigger problems. But hey, it's just a show and Dr. Reese did save a life.

I really admire how professional Dr. Choi was, he really took responsibility when Reese was being scolded for doing an operation without a doctor supervision. It’s not illegal if the doctor who is teaching the student gives their consent, right?

It is in fact illegal. A med student does not have a medical degree, and as such is not allowed to do operations on their own, just like any other citizen. With a doctor present, they can be allowed to operate, but only with a doctor present.

I love how everyone has full faith in Reese in regards to any work they give her so she’ll learn something. Like here, Dr.Choi should have been cautious of letting a student doctor do a procedure like that when it should be an actual doctor to do the job. Ethan was always very supportive of Sarah. On the very first episode, he urged her to do stronger chest compressions on a little girl even if it broke her ribs. When the girl was safe and Sarah couldn't believe she hurt the girl, Ethan reminded her that she also saved the girl's life. He knew she was capable and quick learner but was a bit unsure of herself and needed a little push or encouragement. I loved this relationship and I'll be honest; I wish we had Ethan mentoring her rather then Dr. Charles.

Choi told Reese to drill the hole. A licensed doctor gave the order to a student doctor. Therefore he was indirectly supervising. I'd imagine though something like this would get people into serious trouble right?

Even though she was given the order she still needed direct physical supervision in the case she missed her measurements or began drilling too deep. It’s a serious thing that even though she was correct and saved that man’s life, she wasn’t allowed to since she used hospital equipment on a hospital premises without supervision. Dr Choi however gave the perfect answer in that it was an urgent situation and he was confident in her abilities.
