@@minglifeng2862 I work in healthcare. That IS a medical fact. Patients are allowed to refuse life-saving surgery. Whether it’s due to religious beliefs, moral beliefs, or lifestyle choices, that’s their right and forcing them into a surgery they don’t consent to is a crime unless they’re under a psych order and deemed unable to make their own choices (for example someone who has depression and is actively suicidal might not have as much choice as someone who does not want a life-saving procedure because it goes against their religious beliefs).

Her friends that were anti-abortion berated her and then never talked to her again because they believed she should have stuck with the pregnancy and died, and just let the father raise the baby. I have met a lot who would prefer the mother to live, but I’ve also met a lot who literally do not care

An embryo is considered a fetus at 8wks of development. At that stage a doctor would call it a baby because the patient was 13wks. I have been pregnant 4 times n my embryos/fetuses have always been referred to as a baby, even in the earlier weeks when I had emergency trips to the ER.

That attitude she had toward that couple, saying "Even though it may seem like a miracle things can still go wrong", it's not what she said, it's HOW she said it. Dr. Manning was put off by it, you could see it on her face. Also, the parents aren't medical experts, and they come to the hospital to find out what is going on with their baby, not to get a lecture.

What's great about this show is how much it focuses on the emotional side of being a doctor. A lot of shows like to up ratings by inserting relationships or making the answer to the solution super abstract. But making decisions like this with moral implications is fascinating to watch with the right cast.

Ectopic pregnancy is pretty straight forward to explain to a patient. Just a tank of empathy and sympathy while explaining to the couple. Majority of the patients just need full compassion from their doctors and healthcare attendants when needing to face a difficult time/news.

Dr. Charles is right though. No matter how much you want to save a patient, it is their body, their decision. A parent of mine is in a religion that when it comes to medical aid, they don't accept ANY kind of blood donation (iykyk) and we did have a scare once of them dying from blood loss. Eventhough my siblings and I knew giving them blood would save them, we respected their choice and told the doctors every chance they came asking, no blood. Luckily my parent survived but at the end of the day, we and their doctors respected their decision to not accept blood, eventhough they were on death's doorstep.

Personally, I love the blonde doctor after seeing her the first time here. She's blunt and no-nonsense. I cannot stand it when my specialists treat me with kids gloves. As a doctor keeping your patient informed about everything is important, but the way you deliver that information is vital also. Here we have a doctor who wanted all the facts before they gave their patient the worst case scenario. Once the facts were known, the patient was informed and the patient made their decision. No matter how much you know, you can't force treatment on someone who doesn't want to be treated. Telling someone they are dying is just as much apart of the job as letting someone die if they don't want you to help them.

Having experienced it for myself, I would never wish an ectopic pregnancy on anyone. It was one of the most physically painful experiences in my life. Yes, I was very depressed that I had a baby and lost it but also understood that the baby never would have survived in the first place.

This episode is a pretty good representation of how abortion should be handled. If you consent to abortion in order to save you life, you're okay. If you want to risk it, whether it's based on religion or fertility issues or both, you are free to do so. And whenever we talk about it, we have to talk with EMPATHY. We have to listen to their struggles and imagine ourselves in their position. The situation is scary enough, you have to be gentle but clear, you have to be kind and tactful. Forcing someone to keep their pregnancy is just as bad as forcing them to terminate. The blond doctor is a great example of why we should respect beliefs, because you can explain what's happening to her body without calling out their beliefs in the process. It's probably a good idea to research their religion if youre not familiar with it in order to spin it in a more comforting way, let them know you made an effort to understand and are giving them the options that can align with their morals. Soften the pain they experience. Edit: Yall. Definition of abortion: the removal of A fetus and placenta. It doesn't matter if it's a viable pregnancy or doomed to fail, it's still an abortion. Yeah...in this case, it's not really abortion. An ectopic pregnancy is in no way viable. In no cases can you just remove it and replant it somewhere else. The placenta is too complex to do that. These sort of "pregnancies" cause death in the mother 100% of the time if not removed. It is 100% not viable. I see no reason to respect someone's "religious beliefs" if those beliefs will endanger their very lives. In a more realistic setting, I think you'd find that several hospital staff would have found some things to lie about in order to save the idiot woman....and they would all have been perfectly fine in doing so. They would not have told her about the heartbeat afterwards. That's actually just beyond cruel, and totally unnecessary. What's done is done. You can't have a try at making another baby if you're dead.

These are the hardest cases, and especially to a couple that have tried for years. I had a father first begging us to “Save his miracle baby” we couldn’t, his wife was barely 12 weeks, and then it was “Please save my wife.” When he told him how serious it was. Too see a grown man crying defeated over the loss of a child he wouldn’t meet, broke my soul. It’s one of the many cases during my nursing career, that I will never forget.

I had many years of infertility and many miscarriages. I am lucky to have never experienced an ectopic, but I know the pain of losing a very wanted baby. I can understand that the blonde doctor crossed a professional line, but I cannot imagine coddling a patient trying to kill themselves to "save" a non-viable fetus. The "baby" is already dead. It cannot survive where it is and will kill you if it grows too big. I would never allow myself to die to keep a non-viable fetus alive. My life (and the life of this hypothetical patient) has value and means something. There is such a gross misunderstanding and so much misinformation about what an ectopic is. If mother dies, so does the non-viable fetus. This entire scenario was oddly handled by this show. I empathize with the gut-wrenching feeling of losing a very much wanted baby, but to blatantly ignore the opinions of doctors trying to save your life is odd behavior.

I remember when I was trying to keep a friends morale up in the hospital while his religious grandma was refusing treatment because of "might die" and "wouldn't recommend". Later, the best doctor in the hospital came down to her room and told her straight up (paraphrased translation) "hello madam, I have the pleasure, or rather displeasure, to tell you that in 24 to 36 hours we will, as you asked, discharge you;" (he paused here then continued with a sigh) "in a casket, straight to the cemetary." Then he left. Everybody in the room (doctors and nurses included) froze in shock at the comment. I am still surprised how she didn't tank her blood pressure from that experience. She died a natural death years later, having done the surgery, after getting to see her grandson(my friend) married. Sometimes being pc doesn't get the point across

Her Dr was just amazing, I told him to be straight with me and niot lie at all or sugar coat anything to me. And he didn't. I was going to comment this show was pushing the limits to be able to tell the storyline in a way that was less morally dubious on the part of the blonde doctor, but then I read some of these comments that make it clear a lot of people don't know the difference between an ectopic pregnancy and an extreme high risk pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy, even if there is a "heartbeat" (which isn't even really a heartbeat at that stage), has a 0% percent chance of viability. There are pregnancy complications that threaten the life of the mother but not necessarily the child, there are pregnancy complications that will make the pregnancy nonviable but still theoretically could be physically delivered if that matters to the mother, and then there is ectopic pregnancy. I don't think any of the doctors really tried to explain this.

The possibility of bearing a child became so overwhelming emotional she couldn't make what was a sound decision; she would have died and in the old days no doubt women did, religious or not. The situation was a bit different but the pain and internal bleeding she experienced was killing her. The first inexperienced doctor said it was constipation. I don't think they explained to the patient well enough that ectopic pregnancies are unfortunately a non-starter. There isn't anything you can do to save the foetus. So that effectively eliminates the foetus from the decision whether or not to have the surgery. Her choice becomes 'Do you want to live or do you want to die?', and if she says she wants to die, then the doctors have to decide if they are willing to essentially perform an assisted suicide by watching her die painfully. You can't force someone to have a surgery when they refuse, it has to be their choice, but I don't see why they weren't clearer about this element. She was acting like the pregnancy could become viable if she waited. On another point, the whole believe that God will fix it is just so confusing. Do you believe that God purposefully made the pregnancy ectopic and will then change it for some unknown reason, or are you saying that God was sleeping on the job so the pregnancy was accidentally ectopic and he will fix the mistake? Why would you trust God to fix something that went wrong on his watch in the first place? And if you think God is going to fix your health so you ignore the recommendations of your doctors, why did you bother coming to the doctors for help anyway? I mean this more respectfully than it sounds, it's just this sort of talk about God has never really made any sense to me.
