Shane Parrish sits down with the renowned biochemist Dr. Rhonda Patrick to explore the intricate world of nutrition and health. Dr. Patrick provides a deep dive into the role micronutrients play in our daily health, detailing how deficiencies and insufficiencies in vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids can lead to serious health issues over time. Shane and Dr. Patrick also discuss the science behind deliberate heat exposure. She outlines the optimal sauna conditions-temperature, duration, and frequency-necessary for these health benefits and explains how the physiological mechanisms work.
Rhonda Patrick has a Ph.D. in biomedical science and a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry/chemistry from the University of California, San Diego. She has done extensive research on aging, cancer, and nutrition.

Rhonda, I have important information on your "do not mix blueberries with bananas" advice and your consecutive change of your smoothie recipe. The reason why you shouldn't mix berries with bananas is that fruit containing polyphenoloxidase (PPO) degrades the polyphenols in the berries. However, we don't just find high concentrations of PPO in bananas but also e. g. in chard which is featured prominently in your smoothie recipe, right along with blueberries. So if you want to avoid to have the blueberries' polyphenols degraded you better eat them without any of the other ingredients in your smoothie. You might want to rethink the recipe you give out to newsletter subscribers (I'm one of them, yayy 😊). Warmest wishes, Anne

TLDR; don’t mix bananas with blueberries because they contain an enzyme that breaks down the enzyme. Are we even sure that’s bad? Is there a possibility it increases absorption?

Currently almost all fruits and vegetables are coated with APEEL. It contains a large amount of heavy metals that cannot be washed off. Best to scrape or peel the outer layer. Plus the salmon are in sea water pens offshore outside any type of pollution run off. And MAINE wild blueberries are the best type of blue berry. These blue berry fields are truly wild and very harsh environment for most other plants etc. which is why these berries are so good for you.

Bet you are not aware that the chemicals that are used in most US water supplies to kill bacteria and such, which are relatively harmless to drink (except for the possibility that they may eventually cause kidney disease) are harmful if turned into steam and inhaled. regular usage of mushrooms (3x week) as food or supplement also heavily decreases chances of cancer. The thing with Magnesium is likely related to preventing calcium deposits. So, on that front, the other things would be Vitamin K2 on days when you go in the sun, especially, in normal doses - don't go overboard on this one. Chanca piedra
@DutchmanAmsterdam
@DutchmanAmsterdam 24 күн бұрын
Don't go overboard with K2 based on what study? I never heard about that and wonder if you are just making things up. Also when you go in the sun your skin creates the inactive D3 cholecalciferol, this gradualy gets metabolised into calcifediol in the liver over one up to four weeks. So the K2 you take that day makes little difference. Luckily K2 is already active and will stay in the blood and liver for a couple of weeks while the D3 metabolisation continues. The British NHS states that no upper limit for K2 is known and 1000mcg daily is completely safe. That makes sense since many Japanese ingest huge amounts from the natto they eat. Easily 1000 to 2000 mcg or even double that in one single breakfast portion. So What's your worry about K2 based on? Ideally one should take at least 400 mcg K2 mk7 daily, for proper calcium placement in the bones. Also Magnesium is needed for this. I would btw not depend on the sun for D3 rather take a supplement, 5000 IU or 10,000 daily depending on your 25(OH)D3 blood level. The same UV rays that form D3 also cause DNA damage leading to skin cancer, that is well known. D3 from supplements is 100% equal to the one you get from sunshine without the skin damage. A little bit of sunshine may be healthy but I would be careful not to overdo it. BTW D3 overdose is so rare that it really doesn't occur. Having a blood level of 100 ng/ml is probably ideal and is what dr Bozz advises, I strive for that myself. Have your blood checked for calcium and phosphor at the same time to have confirmed that there is no D3 toxicity (which would show as hyper calcemia/phosphoremia) Good luck. 👍

@@DutchmanAmsterdam - anything that promotes bone reformation (very useful when done in normal amounts) can have negative consequences especially if you have anything putting pressure on your body in an area. One example would be sunglasses that are pressed too tight against the area above the nose. It's just my $0.02. Good not to go overboard with any supplements, but the concern is bone reformation just based on puttin' 2 and 2 together. Besides, you don't need this one in the first place if you have good gut bacteria and eat right (have some greens)

And, I am so happy she explained the K1/K2 for Vit D3 to get calcium directed to the right places in our bodies. With all the K2 talk these days to shuttle calcium to the bones and not the wrong places in our bodies, I too, took K2 and within a few days I was getting small hemorrhages in one of my eyes, upon stopping the K2 they went away. A couple of weeks later, I restarted the K2 and had the same small bleds in my eye. I feel so better knowing I can get the same effects of K2 with getting enough K1. Does magnesium supplements equate to leafy greens.
@DaveThomson
@DaveThomson 26 күн бұрын
It's not 1 to 1. Clearly supplements are more concentrated. You have to eat a lot of leafy green. You need to cook them to break up the cellulose and release minerals from the phytate. And then you need to make sure you don't end up with high levels of oxalate (can lead to kidney stones)

I smoke & I am 70 now. I was born & raised around 2nd hand smokers & started smoking at age 15. I'm 80% red meat carnivore & also eat processed sweets & toasted bread. I have been for 5 years with copious fatty cuts lately. No vegetables only tomatoes. I take supps: Glycine, NAC, Mg Glycinate, Mg Complex, Taurine, Milk Thistle, Potassium, Iodine. Recently I love to salt my meats & over easy eggs for a much better taste. I'm also moderating & slowly reducing sweets. I just had bloodwork done, no issues. Conventionally speaking I may be an anomaly. Well wishes ❤

Tastes as bad as liver which I eat once a month but CLO has been used for a very long time for the treatment & prevention of all sorts of health problems. Also I met a guy once in a group of truck drivers shooting the crap at a Save-Alot distribution center that said his doctor told him if he ever quit smoking he'd die. It was about 20 years ago. We all laughed. I recently found out every cigarette has half a teaspoon of sugar added to it. I think TPTB add it to rolling tobacco as well. Well wishes.

7:25 - I started researching various aspects of nutrition and medicine back in 81 and found two great research papers on Selenium and lung cancer rates, on from China and one from the USA. The conclusion from the one in China stated that those with high Selenium from their food had the same lung cancer rates of non smoking Americans - And the one from the US had a 40% decrease in lung cancer rates. Some time later I correlated the two conclusions and they were so closely matched as to be identical conclusions. The OMEGA 3's mentioned could very well be from food as the likes of wild Salmon, Sardines and Kippers etc also have a good supply of Selenium. I believe I shall go back to high quality OMEGA supplements again as I simply do not get enough of them these days. Thanks for the heads up Dr. Patrick 👍 - 👍

The GMO plant does not destroy the glyphosate directly. So, it can NOT be washed away. The amount of this poison inside the fruit will depend on how physiologically stable the glyphosate is. It will be a matter of its 1/2 life since the most recent spray.
