The British marketed their opium as " longevity medicine" to the Chinese, got them addicted, and finally broke the massive trade imbalance thru export of opium to China.

All my cousins in India want to come to England or Canada or USA where as I want to go back to India and be rid of my britishness. I bought a one way ticket out of UK a year ago , currently I'm in Thailand but I plan to settle down in my motherland and start a family there. Thank you for this speech, very articulate. Good to hear you learned about the British rule. Many people in UK don't even know how horrible the colonial past was. We as Indians don't hate UK for the past, we love UK and the people. We want them acknowledge that the colonial rule was terrrible for India and other Commonwealth countries. And we don't want to hear them justifying the British rule, it is in no way justifiable. It's okay to feel bad but don't let it persist. That's history now. Good Luck! Welcome to India!

@@sirlordhenrymortimer6620 Careful with what you wish for. Post-brexit, your PM is actually looking forward to licking Indian asses so as to sustain Britain economically. Today, if all the Indians were to leave Britain, more than 100,000 people will lose jobs there (source: Grant Thornton UK) . Indian companies in Britain reportedly paid 650 million pounds to your government in taxes (Source: India meets Britain 2016: Tracking the UK’s top Indian companies, a report by CII). The truth is that much of today's Britain has been build on the blood, sweat and looted wealth of millions of people around the world that suffered horrendously under British colonialism. But they don't teach you a line of all this in schools. And after all this ignorant British public have the audacity of making grand claims of how Britain contributed to globalization through colonialism. Some balls you have, I have to give it to you.

Anyone who doesn't talk about communalism of Muslim League becomes your hero. Anyways, we in India read history without talking about religion much. In fact, Indian books do not even blame Muslims for Partition even though 95% Muslims voted for partition. Indian history books even remain silent on Islamic invaders destroying Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries as a matter of religious intolerance emanating from Quran.

@@ajay262134 do you even know how was both the nations partitioned? What was the voting criteria, how many people voted for it. Do you know that? I know their country was made on the basis of religion only, but only upper class people voted for whether there should be partition or not. Now in 2023, India has rich people accounting to not even 1% of the population. What do you think, how many people were from high class at that time? Because only high class was eligible for the votings. People who own lands, paid all their taxes were eligible. At that time, what do you think, how many people owned land or could pay their taxes? And the person who commented, even if his family also voted at that time. Is it his fault? If he thinks differently, then we should appreciate him. Why fighting on this now? Why you are speaking the language of a politician? It was the politicians who divided us, the british and the pro sepratist politicians like Jinnah and Savarkar. Those were the people who divided us, not all of them (the people of pakistan). We civilians are always used as a pawn for their sick ideas to get more power. They used religion to divide us all at that time. If that didn't happen, our countries would be together or maybe we would be like EU. We would be the most powerful in the world, more than US, China and Russia. But we are still fighting. We are still used as a pawn by our politicians of both the countries. What happened after the Revolt of 1857, in which Hindus- Muslims and other minorities fought together against british and then after that we are now divided and shifting blames on each other and in the corner, all the politicians are laughing on us and getting more and more powerful. DON'T FIGHT WITH EACH OTHER. We were looted by british only because we fought with each other when the foreign invaders were on our gates.
@akshat_2100

@@lovekanaujia345 not 95%, it was around 16% . That was only the high class citizens. The rest 84% weren't eligible for the voting. And we all know, rich and poor have a lot of gap in every aspect of life. It is the same in every country.

Great respect from a Chinese. Both India and China, along with other non-western countries greatly suffered from Colonialism. Indians prior to British rule caused enormous suffering to each other..as they do today..blaming the British is similar to Hitler blaming the Jews, but done under the flag of 'peace and philosophy '.... as an example the Air Pollution in the Ganges plains kills 2 million people per year and 1 million stillborns...Is their a Western Nation that would allow this? Or the infamous raping of goats? In Haryana alone eight (8) men gang raped a pregnant goat until it died. I have never heard of this in a Western Nation....

BRITISH CRIMES IN INDIA. ( my response to dr Shashi Tharoor). ---------------------------------------- 1-By conquering all of India, Britain ended an age-old rivalry, conflicts & bloodshed between Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs & Marathas, and united them into one nation and made them all feel proud to be Indian. 2-saved millions of lives of widows by abolishing the centuries-old practice of Sati. 3- saved millions of lives by abolishing the 1000s of years old practice of female infanticide in which the baby girls would be buried alive by parents to avoid paying dowry. 4- stopped Indians from butchering one another in the name of religion and caste. 5- promoted education and pulled Indians out of the dark ages and introduced them to the age of science and discovery. 6- built roads, bridges, schools and railway tracks and govt buildings like the parliament house and the president house. 7- introduced Indians to sewers, water closets and running water. Indians had been going to the jungle for the call of nature for 1000s of years. 8- gave the gift of the English language that is helping the subcontinent to learn science. 9- gave Indians a single currency. 10-protected the lives of minorities. 11- gave security and equal opportunity to all Indians. 12-stopped discrimination and racism based on religion or caste. 13- civilised Indians and taught them to respect law and order. 14- built army and police for the entire country. 15- introduced democracy in India and taught Indians the importance of secular and democratic values. 16- gave all Indians equal rights to education and jobs. 17- turned Indian society into a model society (watch the videos from that period). ------------------------------------------------------------------- Since they left, the entire subcontinent has turned into a hellhole for women and minorities. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I demand that the British government pay us reparations for the above-mentioned heinous crimes it committed against us, the poor Indians. -----------------------------------------------------------------

@@thetirelesscrusader4745 1)Right. England is that "great" country that introduced the world to democracy but is ruled by monarchs itself. The hypocrisy!😂 2) I recommend you to read about the Indus Valley Civilization in detail. It was one of the earliest civilizations in the world and had immaculately planned cities, with covered drainage and well maintained sewage system. So Indians were not unaware of these knowledge. 3) The whole world is turning to Ayurveda and Yoga. Were those written in English? I don't think so. Because they weren't! They were written in Sanskrit. So no. English is not necessary to learn science!🙄 The countries where people don't speak English also have medical facilities. 4) The Britishers had no equality and no regard for the religion of the Indians. Please read about the cause of rebellion by Bhagat Singh. 5) The Hindu King, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had already started building a strong navy in 1670s. So I don't know what knowledge of Navy or Army you're talking about. So basically, you are still unaware of many aspects of the history. Also, all of these do not, can not, and can never nullify the fact that the Britishers murdered, tortured, and looted half of the countries in the world and still feel no remorse or guilt for that. If massacring hundreds of unarmed women, men, old people and children in a village fair doesn't count as a heinous act for you, then sorry, but you need to seek some help. URGENTLY. And also, get your facts straight before commenting on how many countries suffered under the cruelty of the Britishers.

In 1750, India had 23% of the world's GDP because it had 25% of the world's population. However, Britain was already a wealthy country even before it colonized India. If we look at the per-capita income of India and Britain in the 1750s as per Angus Maddison data, Britain's per-capita income was three times that of India, and India's per-capita income had been declining for a century before Britain won the Battle of Plassey. Comparing the total GDP of India and Britain in the 1750s to argue that India was richer than Britain is like saying that Uttar Pradesh is richer than Goa today. Later, the Industrial Revolution occurred in the Western world after the Scientific Revolution, with the invention of machines and technologies like the steam engine, and their wealth increased exponentially. Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty.

What would the British do with all the stolen loot? They can't put it into a museum as that would only reinforce their negative image. They should return all the stolen artifacts back to India so that the heritage of India can be put into a museum for the current and future generations to see. They took the Peacock Throne for example and the Kohinoor Diamond. Its like taking King Tuts artifacts and keeping it hidden in a some room in England. I don't see much difference between them and the Taliban destroying the Bamiyan Buddha statues. They are a part of not only India's heritage but also the world's heritage.

You are wrong about Peacock throne. It was taken to Iran by Nadirshah. Someone says it was melted and Nadirshah was killed in 1747 by his general Ahmed Shah Durrani and the wealth got distributed between those Afghani/Irani people. Kohinoor came to Britain via gift from Lord Dalhousie who took it from the defeated Singh Kingdom in 1849 as a reward for treaty where Ranjit Singh's son Dileep Singh was given the security of British and annual allowance etc.

That daughter Sophia was instrumental in organising resistance to the British govt for getting equal voting rights to the women - Suffraget movement. While other women were arrested she was not arrested. She even visited India twice including Punjab, Kashmir etc but no matter what Dileep Singh ji said to Queen Victoria, who was also God Mother to his children like Sophia, Bamba etc British Rule was run by British Elected govt. Dileep Singh knew his kingdom is gone and he is exiled. Sophia died in 1948 soon after the division of Punjab and freedom of India. Queen Victoria had died 48 years ago when there was no question of India 's freedom, let alone division of Punjab.

Some of my Grandparents told that so many of their Parents fingers had cut off as they were involved in Textile business producing Maslin, Fine silk, Exclusive wools and Design clothes. They were being even forced to stop seedings rice or wheat instead of beaten to planting indigo or dahlia plants for clothes dye in order to boosting Britain's cotton industry. It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty.

@@Humanity0101 Why always pull the political party? He has been a representative of India in many International forums. Here,he is being judged as an Indian orator, reprimanding the Britishers' colonialism ,to which we all fell prey to.He is representing India, its cultural ,political values, not the CONGRESS party !!JUST DON'T KEEP YOUR RELIGION ABOVE YOUR MOTHER (NATION)!!even I'm fond of his way of speaking...that necessarily doesn't mean I'm a supporter of the party he is committed to!and, honestly,I am not!

@@sanchitachakraborty2876 .. He is a killer protected by a corrupt and fast failing congress party. I have no interest in reprimanding the British when the Hindu continues to persecute the Sikhs even today. My religion has always been above your mother India always will be. No need to respond with Manmohan was Sikh bla bla bla he was a puppet for looters and used against the Sikhs and Panjab. You detest the British yet you bow down to a privileged and highly trained most pompous sounding British faker. Even the British do not speak like that today. Inferiority complex only bhaia.

😂😂 He never talks about the castism, Untouchability and social discrimination of Indian society. Alive Women were burnt by Upper castes peoples when her husband died, lower cast people were not allowed to even drunk water from ponds , Lower cast people didn't allowed in temples , not become priests, didn't allow to marry with upper cast , 85% of people were living like slave , We thanks to Britisher who gave us freedom from that cast system and allow us to read and participate in different kind of jobs 🎉🎉

Well, it's 2023, and India - united - is stronger than ever before, under impeccable leadership, and having overtaken the UK in global GDP rankings. There are at times dark chapters in history, but the people overcome it to emerge more victorious and glorious than ever. Jai Hind! I salute my people and my Indian ancestry ... for a more successful and brighter future to come!

From Ireland Some stark similarities with Ireland re the famine, of course. The policies, exactly the same. The imposing of English language and culture. And also this whole argument that the British united India. Exactly the same argument used re Ireland. That Ireland was just separate small kingdoms before the English arrived. Broken promises. Plus the divide and rule, sectarian policies, turn Catholics and Protestants against each other re Ireland. It's very shocking. The systematic nature of the behaviour.
