I've learned about this movie through Bennett The Sage, and Linkara's review of it. (3:49 Wow, Inspector Gadget really let himself go.) What fascinates me the most about this movie is it's connection to Marvel's 'Tomb Of Dracula' comic. Marvel's partnership with Toei on the sentai shows was what probably led to Marvel's then newly formed animation studio, Marvel Productions to work with Toei Doga on many of their TV cartoons during the 80's.

I watched the 90's Silver Surfer Fox Kids cartoon on Disney +. Frankly, I don't think Toei could have done any worse than the joyless, yet incredibly hilariously bad result Saban had. If anything, it almost makes THIS tolerable. It even ends with a pathetic "please renew us" cliffhanger that clearly they found out they weren't last minute, so it ends with a massive explosion and a "The End?"

It's interesting how this was Toei's very first animated Marvel project. They later did the animation for some episodes of Spider-Man (1981) and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends (1981), as well as the Pryde of the X-Men (1989) pilot.
@mdo7 Жыл бұрын
Yep, this also pre-dated the Marvel/Madhouse anime collaboration with X-men, Wolverine, Iron Man, & Blade. Don't forget Toei and Marvel worked again in 2014 for Marvel Disk Wars: The Avenger. Madhouse would again worked with Marvel for Marvel Future Avenger. Kind of makes me wonder why Marvel didn't give Tomb of Dracula another anime adaptation/reboot. I mean I can see Madhouse (studio also did Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust), Production I.G (Blood+, Blood-C), Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia) could handle the adaptation if given the opportunity. I mean we're living in the era of anime popularity, so wouldn't it make sense for Marvel to restart Tomb of Dracula anime adaptation with another studio other then Toei.
@Supertron1 Жыл бұрын
@@mdo7 Oh, yeah. I had forgotten that Toei did some animation for Marvel again in the 2010's. In retrospect, i think Marvel may have used Tomb of Dracula as way of deciding if they would be interested in using Toei to animate some of their more well-known characters. The Spider-Man episodes animated by Toei have a very similar art style.

6:33-It was also because the writters were coming up with ways to portray some of these creatures in nearly every way but a few that made it a loophole. People who happened to be turned into blood sucking superpowered monsters through unspecified scientific experiments with bats were not technically Vampires. Similarly woth werewolves. Having general science as an explanation over the occult allowed them to get around the codes wording in an exploitative manner. By allowing the more tame versions of the traditional versions they hoped the writters would choose to revert to them and it would essentially limit the portrayal in a natural censorship. Such titles as "Werewolf by Night" and "Moribus" can help prove it didn't work out so well. Sort of on the contrary, comic company's like marvel even ran with this by adapting Dracula into their modernized characters stories and adding new ones. Dracula was still Brahm Stoker's style Dracula but now you had a new type of vampire hunter in Blade and extended lore for the creatures. Dracula also would cross iver with characrers like Moribus..for reasons. Vampira made all the Vampires aliens. Not kidding.

I found this anime quite humorous, actually. Drac eating (what I assume to be raw) burgers, falling in love, kidnapping a future wife for himself, protecting a group of kids, slapping out a vamp hunter, strangling an old man, crying yelling and throwing a tantrum, hehaving second thoughts about his vampy ways, and his regretting his murderers and butchery, makes me want to see this.. but I won't. I didn't like the fact they they involved the evil one throwing him in there so lightly, and what they did to that dead child was beyond stupid, and finally the mentioning of God Almighty in this was blasphemous.

Spider-Man wasn't a Sentai show, it inspired 'Super Sentai' though. That was a weird way of pronouncing Denshi Sentai Deziman if I ever did hear it. Ah well, where Toei and Marvel may have failed with Dracula: Sovereign of the Dammed, they made up for with several years of outsourcing productions. Of course, Toei would try again to produce a horror themed show for Marvel and Sunbow, while trying to promote a kids toy line by Hasbro; the Inhumanoids. :D

The first essential volume of Tomb you learn quickly the books antagonist beyond Blade and Quincy Harker are not interesting. So Dracula fell into the protagonist role at times occasionally taking interests in mortals, or running into enemies that go against his self interest. I haven't seen the movie, but the Marvel comics Dracula did not serve anyone but himself. I do remember he had a bout with Satan. Which raises many questions. The Satan that created Ghost Rider was retconned into being Mephisto. First among equals of the different Marvel fill ins for the devil. I'm assuming Doctor Sun did not appear? A Japanese scientist who put his brain in a robot and required blood to live. He ended up crossing Dracula at some point

First off, that Drac eating a burger at Disco King should have been a bigger meme than it was. Secondly, the thing that gets me about this anime is the art style and the musical score are actually pretty good. Too bad they blew it by screwing up the plot and making everything essentially a "Dracula out of context" even IN context mess out of the movie. I can forgive the strange animation framing on the fact it was an adaption of a Western project and they tried to make it with a muddled understanding of Western animation and comics. Same problem I have with Transformers Headmasters. Maybe if this was made after they became a major outsource animation studio (usually for Marvel), they'd have a better scope of how to frame it to look like a Marvel comic, all the while not denying themselves their Japanese animation style. Still, should have been either a short form series OR a movie that covered a short arc of the comics with intention to make a sequel.
