Nice stuff Drae. In case no-one else has told you these things: 1) A pantograph in this context is the arm that extends from the roof of the train and contacts the overhead power lines to allow you to get electrical power to the train 2) The locomotive brake just applies breaks to the actual locomotive itself, as such it's often known as the independent brake, as it allows you to control the locomotive's brakes independently of the rest of the train. The main brake handle, often called the automatic brake, controls the brake line that runs the length of the train, and as such will apply brakes on every car connected to the brake line. 3) That white light that turns the engine off...... I'm not certain, but I doubt it has anything to do with speed, my guess is it's current. As you add power you are causing the electric motors to draw more current. There's a limit to how much current they can handle before bad things happen. My guess is this is some kind of protection system to stop you drawing too much current. If I'm right you may notice that as you move faster you can take a higher power setting without the light turning on. The reason for this is complex, but relates to how electric motors work, basically, as they spin faster they draw less current, hence your you can take higher power settings without exceeding that current limit.
@DB-47 Жыл бұрын
Actually I liked how you were fighting with locomotive controls 😅, so here are my notes about what you mentioned or wondered 5:45 Actually VL10 locomotive has four brakes. 1.) Handbrake 2.) Locomotive brake 3.) Independent air brake 4.) Dynamic regenerative brake At 5:46 this second lever has two functions. Braking regulator of dynamic brake or it changes field weakening on motors, when you are on 8S series (17. notch), 2P4S series-parallel (27. notch) or all motor groups parallel 4P2S (36. notch) 6:00 Small compressor is needed to get enough pressure, so pantograph can be risen up. This is common on almost all electric locomotives even on modern ones, where this is of course simplified and controlled by computer. Pantograph is diamond or Z shaped current collector on the roof 7:50 KVC is from russian Контактор вспомогателных цепей - Kontaktor vspomogateylnych cepey (КВЦ / KVC) - Auxiliary devices contactor (breaker), this one powers compressors and cooling fans, which also recharge auxiliary battery and in fast mode they power stator winding on motors needed for dynamic braking 8:05 BV1 is Быстродействующий выключатель БВ1 - Bystrodeystvuyuschcyj vyklyuchatyel - This is master circuit breaker which protects motors from overcurrents. It needs to be turned on to start driving and feeding motors with electric current ⚡️ 9:55 - ВУ Выключатель управления - VU Vyklyuchatyel upravlyenya is steering activation. This is somewhat similar to putting keys into ignition, this unlocks steering with traction circuits of locomotive 10:06 This is quite common, start procedure on most locomotives is not just pressing button 😅 13:24 Actually yes, you can use main air brake even when driving loco only, however locomotive brake is better as it acts faster and smoother. This is crucial when you need to carefully move into wagons to connect them 16:11 When you have to prepare for lowering pantograph, you need to cut power draw to zero (fans, compressors, train heating and motors), then you lower pantograph. Otherwise you would pull violent electric arcs

... so this was a big discussion and learning point when Railroads Online came out. It was clarified by one of the developers that actually works on a currently working museum rail line in California. The "Conductor" is the guy that handles the business and finances of the train. He insures the train runs on schedule, collects money and tickets from passengers and keeps the business records and contracts straight. The "Engineer" is the guy that handles the technical aspects of operating the train - he drives the train and directs the crew to couple/uncouple cars as needed; throw track switches and turnouts when needed, etc. When trains had cabooses, the Conductor had a desk in the caboose and spent most of his time there. The *pantograph* is the mechanism that reaches up from the roof of the engine to make contact with the electric lines stretched above the track where the engine gets it's power. Those motors in the engine compartments are electric motors.
@HotspotsSoutheast Жыл бұрын
Trains have several types of brakes. When parked there is a wheel or crank you turn that pulls a chain that manually locks the brakes on the wheels. You have to release this first. Then there are the air brakes which you control with a lever. It basically does the same thing as the brake wheel except you don’t have to go outside to turn the wheel and you have full control over braking amount. Then there is dynamic braking. This is complicated. The electric motors on the wheels instead of being used to spin the axles can be used as brakes. Going down hill you basically turn off the electricity to the motors and instead use them as generators producing electricity. That electricity is then sent to heavy coils on the roof that act as giant resistors. The resistance puts a load on the motors causing them to spin slower and thus slowing the axles. Dynamic brakes have fans to cool the coils when they get hot. Other fans are of course to cool the diesel engine. The electrical systems and signaling systems are also very complicated. If the locomotive is exceeding the speed limit or passes a red signal the system will put the train into emergency brake mode. You then have to reset the system to continue moving. If you don’t press a kill switch every few minutes to prove you are still alive the brakes come on. If the engine isn’t loading properly or has a fault or out of coolant it will shut down. The wheels have an anti slip device that prevents them from spinning on wet rails. This can fail causing you to lose pulling power. Trains are almost as complex as planes.
@buckduane1991 Жыл бұрын
It’s an electric train. That means your pantograph (arms that reach up to the wire above you) reaches up above you to the wires so electric power can run down to the engine and traction motors that turn the wheels. It powers the air compressor, head lights, heater, and other things as well. You have so many brakes because you want to be able to stop. Locomotive brakes are the brakes to the locomotive only. Train brakes are the air brakes to the entire length of the train. Hand brake is a physical application of the locomotive brakes that stay on until you manually twist them off-always set them to prevent your brakes from bleeding out since air brakes only apply so long as they have air to apply them… else: you have no brakes once the air leaks out, since you have no air pressure to push the brakes onto the wheels. Hey, Drae? I’d recommend you watching a video or two on Hyce’s channel… just beware the mystery citrus!
