There were deleted scenes that showed his mother burn a lot of his stuff. It never says it but it implies that she hated football and the life of being a wife of a football coach in the NFL. Guess she wanted to steer NFL out of her son any chance she could too.

These two women are absolutely insane. One works for a NFL team, the other was married to a long-time NFL coach & is the mother of a NFL GM. They should not need to be told that Draft Day is the one absolutely important day of the year for anyone who works in the NFL front office (actually, I would assume that any competent professional organization, would have done all their work in the months and weeks leading up to the Draft, with all possible scenarios gamed out for their picks, but from what we see in this film, Cleveland is clearly not a competent professional organization, given their gross ignorance of a critical play in a major college Big Ten game, involving two of the top players they are considering, and their over-reliance on a single intern for Draft Day). This is like bothering a tax lawyer or CPA on April 15th, or a candidate for office, on Election Day. It should be only be done if life or death are in the balance. Their own personal issues (a box of ashes, and a fetus) are ABSOLUTELY problems that can wait until tomorrow! Daddy is not getting any deader, and he is not going to rot, and there will be plenty of time to make plans and decisions concerning the fetus if you spring the new on him tomorrow. Probably the best thing they can do for said fetus is make sure his parents are still employed by the time it is born, and the best way to do that, is make sure the Browns can acquire and pay the best players they can, so the Browns are successful and Sonny & Ali, as the two people responsible for those factors, don't get fired, because they were picking baby names, instead of prepping for the draft. What is especially egregious is that Sonny is under pressure in part, because he took upon himself the personal responsibility for trying to save his father's life at his shrewish mother's request, which has put him on the hot seat, as the decision was controversial. She owes him one.
