Draft2Digital vs Publish Drive - What's Better for Authors?

Getting widespread e-book distribution and even print distribution now is much easier when you work with an aggregator service like Publish Drive or Draft2Digital. Uploading directly to Apple, Kobo, Google, Amazon and all the other places is time-consuming and still won't get you the reach or the benefits of using one of these services. But, as an author self-publishing your book it can be tough to know which company is better to use, especially because both of these services are quite good companies to work with. Bad news. D2D looks soooooo promising. BUT ... of about 8 books I submitted they rejected three manuscripts claiming them to be "low content" wtf. I don't do "journals" "planners" "activity books" "coloring books" or any of that other nonsense. I write about law and Chinese language. I found their "service and support" poor, unhelpful, inconsiderate, if not cold and insulting. They made going KU so obvious. I lost lots of sales and wasted a fair amount of time. Disheartening.

Yes it's true even 5 print books got blocked when I didn't do anything of journal or planners. Probably it's being checked by foolish bots, that could be one reason why it blocks the books.

Great video, thanks. I just looked around d2d and it is actually almost impossible to make money with systems like this. According to their own info on FAQs, "We at D2D take 10% of the retail price, our selling stores take 30%..." That means that if you sell a book at $10, d2d takes a dollar, most stores take $3 dollars and you still have to deduct the costs if downloading or manufacturing the actual book. That will leave you with cents per book.

There is a BIG draw back from Draft 2 Digital. If you have uploaded your book onto Amazon you cannot remove Amazon from the distributor list for printbooks only for e-books. On Amazon I get a whole lot more royalties than I do on Draft 2 Digital. I sort of feel like I am being robbed at Draft 2 Digital. So personally if your book is going to sell would you not rather pay the flat fee of under 9 dollars at Publish Drive and get paid full royalties instead of getting 30% of royalties or less from D2D? Just think, what if you book gets 100 sales and your book is listed for 20 dollars? On Amazon you can mark it down lower for your customers but on D2D you have to mark it up really high so you do not feel like you are just getting peanuts.

Out of curiosity, how would one find out about the specific commissions taken by the various digital platforms that the ebook is being sold through? Additionally, would these platforms also charge a monthly or yearly fee to host your ebook?

I published on D2D but it kept publishing forever... I was able to email them and they sent me a message saying that my region may be the problem... Am from Africa, Nigeria. Is Nigeria band from using D2D.

I haven't worked with Publish Drive personally but I do think they are a good company. They are doing some things well but we chose to work with D2D for our authors and everytime we evaluate that choice we still like D2D better for the reasons I share in this video. From their website: International Citizen: Draft2Digital is required to withhold 30% income tax for all international publishers and submit that percentage to the IRS. We'll do that by default, with no extra effort on your part. If your country has a tax treaty with the US, you can take our online tax interview to submit a completed IRS W8 form (most commonly W8-BEN or W8-BEN-E) stating that you're exempt from US taxes. Once we have this form on file, we'll pay you the royalties based on the terms of the tax treaty. You can take the tax interview at any time after starting your account, but must have valid and verifiable tax information on file before you can be paid. You can find the tax interview under Account > Payment Options - How D2D Pays You.

We don't know for certain but we believe that is the case. We encountered a situation where we had to dig into the fine print of their deal and the way those details were laid out matched Ingram. That said, I don't believe they confirmed that for us.

Some highlights: We do not have setup fees for print, and though we do have to pass along Ingram's $25 fee for any changes you make, we give you a FREE change every 90 days for each book you publish via D2D Print. @@BookLaunchers I’m asking what book distributor would you suggest I use to set up a payment option for checkout on my website. Also, which one to use for distribution for my authors. For example, with lulu api I’m able to do direct sales for my website. Meanwhile with PublishDrive and ingramspark I’m able to have my author books distributed on many platforms. Basically, trying to say which companies should I use for direct sales and distribution. I’m trying to make sure that royalties splits up to both the author and publisher company satisfaction.

KDP publishes on Amazon, Lulu is for print books. These are both for digital although D2D has now announced print distribution.

D2d doesn’t do illustrated books? It only takes word files.

It doesn't take word files only - you can upload ebook files to it and that's what you should do if you have an illustrated book.
