First off Tim, you have some great helpers in the shop. They are getting in on the ground floor of some good experience. I glad that your engine is not hurt to bad. Should cleanup pretty good. I am thinking, torque the rods up, and check the housing bores. I bet they are small. Which would deminish rod bearing clearance. It will be interesting to see what you find. Definitely new bolts and a recon of the rods. I would check the pistons, pin bores and rods bushings also. As there was no splash lubrication. For pistons and pins. Atleast you have a fixable engine. You will be running better in no time Tim. Have a great week. 👍

Love your channel. Love your family. Love your truth. I'm Ford guy. Did over 500 engines over the years. Had my own shop. Customer blew up a BBC in a boat. Pickup tube feel off. If I ever did a Chevy, always brazed it on. If I were going to run an expensive Cleveland, I'd run a motor plate and use a rear sump. Get rid of the shock towers and suspension. The pickup tube is also going to be bolted to one of the main caps. Also, when I built figure 8 racing Cleveland engines to run at Monroe Washington, I ran two oil pressure gauges. One off the front of the block and one off the rear. Side note. Has to do with 4v heads, dot or not. I was looking through all my heads. A pair of 1971 boss 351 heads I have has no dot, just a big 4 in the corner. Anyone else find this ?

I rebuilt a 1970 351 4V motor that came out of a Mach1. I replaced bearings and gaskets, cleaned up pistons, and replaced rings. I honed the cylinders lightly and just broke the glaze. I replaced the oil pump with a hi volume, big mistake. I used the stock oil pan and broke in my motor with low revs and baby it for one thousand miles. I changed oil and filter and went out to Baylands race way park. Made my first short shift pass with a 15:50 et. In my second pass, I raised rpm to 5500 and let her sing. I went through the traps with my engine, making a lot of ticketing noise. I took it out of gear and gave a little gas, and the noise was still persistent. I got home and pulled motor out, and dropped oil pan. Nothing but fine shavings everywhere, rods got hot because they were discolored. It was an 11.1 compression motor, and the pistons were touching the cylinder head. I put a for sale on the car and sold it as is, motor and all. I never bought another Ford again. In the upper left corner is my 2018 SS Camaro that has never given me any problems.

My Fords have given many Camaros problems over the years. Clevelands and Windsors alike. Stock-style oil pans o.k. to use high-pressure, not high-volume oil pumps. Sounds as if you needed thicker head gaskets. For future reference on average, achieve quench clearance of .030 with steel rods and .040 for aluminum rods. And keep 'em under 7000 r.p.m.
