Sheet metal for English cars - particularly MG's - is very reasonable and there are tons of parts around. Even in Canada you can usually find a decent fender or wing for $125.00. Usually it is only the bottom that is rotten and repair pieces are less than $50.00 new. If the tunnel and rear bulkhead are intact it is not beyond a DIY person to replace the castles, repair the bulkhead and replace the sills.

Easy restart for old LBCs. I've done MGs, classic Minis, Triumphs, Jags, Healeys out of fields, garages, basements and barns. Some in as little as 20 minutes. Only one was seized from overheating. Started working on them in 68. Worked for an MG dealer. Gap& clean plugs, check valve clearances, clean/adjust points, clean out float bowls, needles & seats and dashpots, add a separate temp gas supply, check oil. When all else failed, we used to use matchbook covers to gap points as they were 0.015" 2,000 grit is too smooth. Used to have point files. File them flat. Dont polish. SUs require the dashpots to function properly as they meter the fuel from the jets. You likely never got a real oil pressure reading, but it sounds okay. Properly tuned & lubed I bet that motor is a decent runner. Do yourself a favor and get a comprehensive manual. Have fun!

Rebuild that thing! I'm bit biased...as I HAVE a '71 MGB. Not that it makes much of a difference, but i believe if that is a 71 body, the engine might not be....from my research, the 71 had timing marks located at 6 o'clock... those appear to be at a useable angle.... so maybe a late 71, or later engine. Those floors are RUST FREE! Can't see a spec of rust on em! ha... keep up the good work!

I agree it should be rebuilt. I am more of a Sunbeam Alpine man myself, own a underrated and forgotten Humber Super Snipe which I had to fabricate the bottom of the nearside front wing along with the inner, membrane and outer sill, the top of the offside front wing by the A post and C post by the rear window and cutting off part of the guttering to get the rusty parts. My wife said that they were only small holes. They do grow when you go digging.
