A Poplar tree fell into our pond, and it's gotta go! Using a Kubota L4701 to drag the tree and milling it with a Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. I also get the trailer backed up to the pig pen in preparation for butcher day.

Poplar is a really pretty wood, not sure if it's hard enough that I would make flooring out of it but it makes awesome shiplap for walls. If you dry it in direct sunlight it can warp so I always band the stack so it can't move but you have to check the bands ever couple weeks because when it starts to shrink they'll need tightening. Enjoyed the video as always.

Wes, when pigs eat license plates, does that mean they are asking for more iron in their diet? Or when they finish eating the plate are they officially a licensed breed? 😊

We used to use the tops of the trees that would normally be scrap, to cut up for outdoor ‘camp’ fires. For a casual outdoor fire, it seemed a waste to use split hardwoods suitable for wood stove or indoor fire place. At my old house, I kept 2 wood racks.. one for high quality wood, and another for random species smalls and odds, usually from top branches, just for a ‘sit around’ fire. Many ways to use the trees...love the milling projects.

When I was a kid, I used to skid 2-3 big old red oaks out of the woods with a medium sized tractor. As long as you can lift them slightly with the 3pt hitch so they don't dig in, they'll skid out like a sled. Another great video.

Hello Wes. That was a perfect plan for pulling the tree out. If that other tree is long enough and big enough, you might get some nice-looking wood out of it. I have seen Cyprus trees that had been under water for 100 + years yield some nice and expensive wood. The multi species floor is a great idea. I guess we might see that early to Spring next year. Have good days!

Man I just had the same deal. On a Friday in late June I had a thunderstorm blow a big double oak into my pond. I used chains on my 50 hp tractor, no 4wd, and waded out waist deep, cut pieces, drug them out, and started over. It took me a few days but I have 2 years worth of good oak firewood . In mid July I had another storm blow through. This one took out 3 large red oaks on the backside of my dam. I had a friend bring out his skidsteer and hired a tree guy because one of the trees was hung up in an even bigger oak. I lost several giant poplars but they're back in the woods. I did lose 2 sections of field fencing...and part of my shingles on my house. My insurance company came through and they finished my new roof on Wednesday.

We did a lot of ciphering and figuring and physics evaluations. This tree scared me because it had to be dropped and it was in a bad situation. I didn't feel comfortable doing it myself. Will the stump pop up? Will the truck swing down? Will the trunk roll out of the other tree? We eventually used the skid-steer to push the root ball while the tree guy wedged the trunk. He was standing on a steep slope(backside of my pond dam), cutting a wedge in a big oak ABOVE his head. The skid-steer allowed him to cut a bit and then use the machine to basically break the tree at the wedge. We then brought the steer around the side and pulled the tree sideways until it pulled out of the other tree. Easy peasy. I got a little "Lucky" because three of the trees uprooted and tore up a fence-line. Technically, the fence line is a structure so insurance paid to take the trees off the fence and repair the fence. Now I have about 10 years worth of oak firewood logs laying in the pasture that will keep me busy when it cools off. Come get all you want. @@falllineridge

I watched an interesting video the other day. Like most people, I remove the first slab cut to get my flat spot, then rotate 180 degrees. The guys in the video rotated 270 degrees after their first cut. The reason they did this was to put all the rest of the cuts in clean wood...i.e. no bark. You could turn the cant away from your stops but I think that would be harder. Because they didn't have a flat spot to rest against the log stop for a good square edge, they used a framing square instead on the other side of the log in relation to the bunks. It would be much easier to do this method if you have hydraulics, but they did it with cant hooks and so did I. I was surprised how much longer my blades stayed sharp. Basically, you only have one dirty cut (the first one). For somebody who doesn't have a sharpener, it will really extend the life of your blades. You should try it.

Good job Wes, I have a similar problem with a tree in the pond. My problem is I can't get the tractor that close, also no 4WD for me but I can lock the Diff, good luck turning with it locked. I think I would have cut it about 12 foot from the stump and tried two sections to lighten the load. Had that been an Oak like I am trying to tackle I would have said good luck. Boy that Grapple really comes in handy.

Choke up on that chain so the box blade is right against the log. That way when you lift the box the but end if the log comes off the ground. You would be surprised what that little tractor will haul out the woods. I have pulled much bigger logs with a smaller tractor. It takes some practice to get the chain just right but it makes a big difference in how the tractor handles too.

Great job getting that tree off your dam and out of the water. That was one of a lot of problems with trees growing on pond dams. They can blow over and land in your pond or they can blow away from the pond and great a spill way and let the water flow out of the pond. Falling on the down side of the dam gives the tree more distance to fall and pull more roots out of the ground, creating a much larger hole. Also another problem is that when the roots finally rot they will leave holes and weak spots in the dam where water can leach through and weaken the dam even more.. There are more reason to keep trees off your dam. Best advice is to cut/kill them as saplings as soon as you're them.

I drug two foot elm trees that I cut down for my mother with a 3000 .ford tractor, so if a 30 horse tractor would drag a much bigger tree than you have, a 45 horse tractor should make it easy work. Actually, I cut down 11 of them and drug them down to a swamp across from my mothers house. I pulled them with a trace chain with drag hooks, wrapped around the bar on the three point. I later cut them up. That was almost 50 years ago, too. You do not burn elm
