Why I'm Not Sad to See Them Go

The pigs are off to the butcher soon, and I'm not sad to see them go. Fixing the wiring on a livestock trailer, adding nesting boxes for the chickens, and talking about pigs.

That extra wire might be the ground. When the truck is still, it will ground through the hitch. But when bouncing down the road, the ground is inconsistent, causing the lights to flicker. So, you need to run a ground wire to assure the tow vehicle and the trailer are commonly grounded. An old electrician once told me, when you have a electrical problem, check the ground first!

We had a baby pig named Hamfat. He grew large enough one day he walked thru the kitchen screen door. After that we were told Hamfat ran away. Had some Mr. Ben Guined spices to make sausage.

You have plenty of nesting boxes. They will usually all pick 2 or 3 boxes where they all want to lay. Try placing a few fake eggs in the boxes so they know that's the place to lay.

If you are blowing fuses, you have a dead short. From the looks of the wiring, it may be several places. As you said, this is the second time you have worked on your friend's lights to use his trailer. That's a good friend to have. I bought a trailer once with similar issues with the lights. Nothing was standard and wiring was well worn. I went to Northern Tool and just bought a trailer harness of new LED lights that had standard wire colors. And yes, there are color standards for trailer lighting. I even secured the wiring inside a cheap rubber or plastic conduit to the bottom of the trailer to reduce the chance of future damage. Didn't take even half day with me working and crawling around alone. Since that day I have not had any problems, and anyone can come hook to my trailer and all the lights work great. It didn't cost much at all and solved all matter of recurring problems. With the well-worn wiring you show, this is probably not the last time a problem will occur. Thanks.

Hi Wes. From the beginning, you said what the pigs were for, and you have met your goal. I heard you say it was a loaner trailer but not who it belonged to. If it were my Dad's trailer, and for the amount of time you spent on it, I would have started at the plug on the truck so that all of the functions of the lights would be the same color. To clarify, "While you are there......". It works and that is all that matters. Have good days!

Your son is amazing. He'll grow up being a smart and brilliant young man. As far as the pigs, yep they are food no matter how you look at it. You've done an kool job raising them. My grandparents had livestock. Chicken for meat and eggs. Cows for milk and meat. Pigs for meat. Then on top of that they has 1 1/2 acre garden plus fruit trees.

I noticed during the earlier part of the video that you're using pine shavings for the chickens. Something to consider on that is the phenols in the pine. They're highly poisonous and can build up in mammilian livers over time through the air. If you can manage to use aspen shavings or something like that, it would greatly reduce the risk of damage to the chickens and your family. Love the channel!

GOOGLE is fabulous in explaining wiring color code for trailer lighting and electric brakes. plus, if you don't have the brake pedal depressed, to close the circuit for the brake lights, you won't get power. there is also process of elimination. if you get R, L and running lights, the only wire left is the brakes lights and ground.

Your test light is one of the most useful tools for automotive electrical diagnosis. I've fixed extremely expensive cars with just a twelve volt test probe. You're doing that diag exactly right. Keep on keepin on, brother!

I feel you on the "being ready" to process your livestock. It was not pigs, but last year we decided to get some meat birds and settled on turkeys. I really enjoyed them as they were growing out. They would follow you around like a dog when I was working outside, were very curious and, as a turkey hunter, I actually practiced my calls with them. I was really not sure at one point if I wanted to process them. By the time that came along, they had started to range out farther, which was an issue on a couple of times getting them back, and they were eating much more, of course. I was ready and they were delicious. I think it is part of the natural process in the end for those of us that choose to be an active participant in the food chain. I do so enjoy watching you with the little man. Mine just graduated from UW Madison, so brings back fun memories.

Falllineridge one thing i did with all my trailers is switch all my trailers over to the 7 plug connector. No adapters needed and i get a much better connection.

You might want to get some crimp connectors so you can get rid of the wire nuts and the tape. That will save you a lot of trouble in the future. Just saying.

My dad always had two pigs each year to put in the freezer and feed us for the year, he would do the slaughtering himself on the backside of the barn in late fall, then hang them to bleed out for blood pudding, then butcher them in a shed he had just for that. You should try doing one when it’s about 200lbs. Even with lots of laying boxes my chickens lay in two or three only, I keep them in the coop until noon as they tend to lay all their eggs by then.

Maaaate! go to a parts store grab 10 yards of 5 core trailer wire and a pug, the plug will have the right colours for each purpose, solder your connections and off you go , simple job rather than patching up and using wire nuts (aaaargh), trust me much easier!!!

For trailer wiring brown is running light yellow is left turn and green is right turn brake light work with turning signals. Hope this helps

If you look closely, some screws that look like Philips head also have a square drive in the center, just something easily overlooked if you are not looking for it, but those looked like genuine Philips heads, also not a fan

Wes, for four wire lights you have a White, Brown, Yellow and Green wires. WHITE isa always the Ground or common wire. This is why it is usually the shortest wire on the trailer wire set. It usually gets connected to the trailer frame close to the hitch and provides a good ground for everything. it is easy to remember what the other three wires are for if you can remember this: gReen is for the Right side (brake and turn), and yeLlow is for the Left side. This leaves the brown wire for the taillights. When you get new lights for trailers, if they have pigtails attached, you will see the same colors. The extra wire that you saw on the right side was probably a ground wire that someone ran because they had problems with the lights. It could also have been a power light for an interior light for the trailer, if it had one.

ASE certified!😂 The pigs turned out really nice. Good size in a quick timeframe. We say that if they looked like piglets at processing time, we’d never process any. We are down to 11 pigs left. Really slowing down on pork production here. The labor they require just isn’t sustainable for us.

I do know what you mean by saying you can not fully trust them my last pigs that I raise my male was around 800 pounds and was friendly as it can be put when a pig that big sneak behind you and want some loving it is quit a bulldozer plus he had his tusk so if I had to go in his pen I made sure there was somebody keeping an eye on him to let me know he was coming so I could face him instead of being surprised by him and give some loving , have a great day and I know they will make very tasty meat

It's expected to hurt when farming pigs as they are proven to be smarter then even dogs and they have the same love emotions that dogs do but I respect that they were raised well as happy pigs. As pigs are pigs, humans are humans, and humans love meat 😅

Pigs can be very vicious and because they are so intelligent they are pretty destructive, My mum used to work for home help and she got a new client one day and he was way out of town on a farm, she went down a long driveway and there were pigs everywhere, huge pigs! So she went in and helped this old dude with his housework and when she went to leave she noticed the pigs all around her car so the old guy started calling them and was throwing bread to them so she could safely get to the car, when she got to the car, there were no door handles left on her car, they had chewed the number plates off, bitten gouges out of the lights and tires 😱🤯😂😂😂😂😂😂 she was only there 1.5 hours! 🐖

There's no way to count man hours. If I counted man hours the meat would be $100 a pound. It's a labor of love. When it comes to feed, I think I've greatly reduced the costs as compared to last year.

For one thing you are using the wrong type of connector. You dont use wire nuts to make connections. They will let in moisture which is your enemy.

Yeah it's not the best setup, but the nuts are the least of my problems. The insulation is cracked in places so moisture is gonna get through regardless. It really needs a new harness all the way, but this will get me there for now.
