I'm 66 years old, and while I still recall the ads for the cigarettes of the 60s (L&M, Lucky Strike, Chesterfield, Winston, Marlboro, Old Gold, Kent, Philip Morris, Lark etc.), neither I nor any of my similarly-aged friends remember Fatima, except from these Dragnet re-runs.

Wow that’s insteresting! I’ve started from episode one and I figured Fatima was the most popular in the west coast with how often the commercials were on! I really only am super familiar with Winston and Salem cuz I lived in Winston-Salem and a lot of Reynolds family history is there.

Maybe it WAS a West-coast thing; I grew up in the east coast. Baby-boomers of my generation still all the cigarette commercial jingles, as they played almost continuously on TV in the 50s -60s until they were banned. That's why it seems odd to me to not have known Fatima. Eventually, the sponsor shifted to its bigger brand, Chesterfield, for "Dragnet" while the L & M brand sponsored "Gunsmoke."

According to Wikipedia, the Fatima brand was owned and manufactured by Liggett & Myers (L&M). Fatima was the best-selling cigarette brand in the US from 1910 to 1920. Chesterfield was acquired by L&M in 1912, and acquired by Philip Morris in 1999. The Fatima brand was phased out around 1980.

28:55- "GANGBUSTERS" alternated with "DRAGNET" on TV during 1952. When its producer, Phillips H. Lord, fell ill, due to overwork from overseeing both the radio and TV editions of "GANGBUSTERS" [for some reason, Jack Webb didn't have the same problem producing and starring in two versions of "DRAGNET"], the series was cancelled {the 17 episodes already produced were eventually syndicated as '"CAPTURED"}, and "DRAGNET" became a weekly TV series in January 1953.

Wonder why they dumped mild flavorful Fatima after 5 years of saying how great they were? Growing up I saw a lot more people smoking Chesterfields and Lucky Strikes than I ever did Fatimas, which I hardly remember seeing.

Fatima was the brand the series originally "pushed" during the first three years of Liggett & Myers' sponsorship (1949-'52). When they decided Chesterfield needed a boost after they ended their sponsorship of Bob Hope's and Bing Crosby's radio shows [on NBC and CBS] after the 1951-'52 season, they also decided Fatima just wasn't reaching its sales potential among smokers, and let that brand "slide", while concentrating on making Chesterfield a better-selling cigarette on "DRAGNET".

This was the one episode that isn't to be found on the web, yet without being on tv the impact isn't there. Frank Smith and his family are terrorized, and Ben Alexander comes through with a good performance that can't be shown in radio. At the end, Bull gets by Friday as he tries to escape. Frank Smith cold cocks him uncharacteristically as the gentler Frank Smith shows how to take care of his family. This was the best Dragnet and yet is nowhere to be found.

@teresas81732 ай бұрын
Why wasn’t the informant charged with something? He gave a known dangerous criminal a cops private phone number. Why would an informant be given a private phone number?, they can just reach an officer at the office with info. I hope Frank got his money back, by any means necessary. Why was the informant covering for the Bull anyway? Money and cowardice. He was no good, asking Joe and Frank for money after what he did and after getting money from Bull.
