For me this is truly one of the most amazing cut-scenes in video game history. The haunting music, the feeling of dread as the darkspawn amass and start moving toward the small band of defenders, the heroic charge of the King's forces against fearful odds...then the later scene with Duncan realising reinforcements aren't coming and seeing the King's forces getting wiped out. Too bad it's way too long for a movie. Unless they make it a 2-parts or 3-parts movie, and skipped the DLC. Loghain however made it clear he didn't want Orlais entering Fereldan, and that they WERE going to fight without them. Also, Loghain offered to have his own men light the beacon in the tower. It was fairly obvious that he was planning on betraying Cailan at this battle. He didn't count on Cailan overruling him and sending Alistair (his brother) and the Hero of Fereldan to light the beacon instead.

I honestly love the shot of one of the soldiers hurrying to their positions pushing the Warden, especially since it is mirrored much later in the game, when, after the Archdemon is slain, one of Redcliff soldiers pursuing the darkspawn pushes Bann Teagan looking at Fort Drakon in a similar manner. When compared, these two show just how far our hero has come since the beginning of the game. At Ostagar, the shock and awe on Warden’s face say it all: the real epic action with powerful kings, legendary heroes, and proud nobles is down there, in the valley, and he can only glance at it while being sent on an errand, albeit an important one. In the Battle of Denerim, the proud nobles fight the delaying action with no greater purpose than give the Warden time to kill the Archdemon, and this time it is Bann Teagan who can only glance at the epicenter of the epic struggle but cannot influence it directly. The Warden has become as important in comparison to the powerhouses of Ferelden as they were once compared to him/her.

@venomx99x9 жыл бұрын
dragon age origins was one of the games that will never have an equal.
@EldritchAugur9 жыл бұрын
Inquisition needed more of a focus on writing and world building, the reason why Origins works so well, is because it's so charismatic about how it characterizes every aspect of the game. Inquisition seemed less inclined to develop the world and more inclined about making you pick up elfroot. Inquisition very obviously took inspiration from Skyrim and that's what worries me, Skyrim has seemingly endless beautiful landscapes that seem like they would be a joy to explore, except they aren't, because Bethesda doesn't give them any meaning. Strong writing is integral to RPG's, gameplay is worthless without some kind of meaning behind it.
@I_Rayne_I9 жыл бұрын
***** Well said.
@Tlevids9 жыл бұрын
***** I disagree - Skyrim's world is rich with lore and meaning: the Elder Scrolls series has been around for over 20 years and its accumulated volume of lore is phenomenal: most major locations you visit in the game have rich and complex histories and culture. I agree though on your point that DA:I did try and imitate Skyrim in its side content. But the main problem isn't that they tried to emulate Skyrim in the first place but that they tried and failed. Most of the game's side missions consist of highly simplistic quests that have nothing like the level of complexity present in many of Skyrim's side quests. Thankfully, DA:I was saved by its strong, cinematic main quest and interesting characters, though the primary antagonist was badly written (which is a big contrast to the supremely written Teyrn Loghain from DA:O).
@72Armed9 жыл бұрын
***** Dragon Age inquisition was basically Bioware playing it safe, sticking to a tried and true model to win back their cautious audience after Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2. The story and writing I have major criticisms about, such as the shoehorning in of political correctness. There is nothing wrong with it being present, but it is constantly shoved in our faces at the expense of the writing quality. The story itself carried little to no weight in its MMO styled format. Not once did I feel like the world was fucked like in Origins or the drama of seeing your home tearing itself to pieces in DA:2. There were no true cutscenes or any indication your inquisition was actually fighting the antagonists forces ever aside from the siege of adamant. Its just "go here/fuck up enemy plans/go there/fuck up more plans" without the villain ever striking back. The characters saved it for me, and even then while diverse, I didn't form the same connections with the characters like I did in the previous two dragon ages. Nothing you did ever felt like it did anything, not to mention the kids book styled writing done for the villain. I mean come on, you hear Corypheus's name in almost every single second fucking line of dialogue. Another gripe was the complete removal of the unique worldly things that made Dragon ages world seem more alive. The oppression of elves, the seeming scarcity of dwarves, the vast number of NPC's you interact with being human, alienages and dozens more to say the least. I am serious when I say that it feels as if Inquisition would have been much better off if it wasn't a dragon age game. Remove the dragon age from the title and it becomes more acceptable, but otherwise its just a MMO styled RPG with an abstract Dragon Age paintjob. Lastly, I found that the writing for the Inquisitor in particular was rather bland. You never felt like the big scary inquisitor who is going to save the world, just a dude with fancy armour that just seems to have some people who show you shit and loves to pick up fucking elfroot and flowers. It lacked the soul of the previous two games, and in fucking origins the warden wasn't even voiced. Hell, this problem shone like a star blowing up when you see Hawke again.

They are outnumbered and not up in the Fortress (which would be logical in this case), because they had to bait the Darkspawn into an attack, so that the main army can strike from behind and trap them in this narrow path. The plan was good. If only it had worked fully...
@LiveAndSound10 жыл бұрын
Shagon89 It wouldn't have worked. They expected hundreds of Darkspawn, not millions. There were so many, they could be practically seen all over the Korcari Wilds from the bridge (Which, you know, it's very damn high), and those were not even a third of the Horde. They wouldn't have been able to flank them effectively, since they couldn't even see the end of the Horde. There were too many to sucessfully trap them like intended. And that's not bringing the Archdemon. The plan was good, they just underestimated the Darkspawn. It would've been better if someone didn't tell the Orlesian GW reinforcements to fuck off instead of helping them.

Why? Loghain made the right choice here. It was too late to charge in. By the time the signal came, most of the soldiers in the ruins would have been dead already. Had Loghain charged in according to plan, he would be risking _thousands_ of fresh soldiers just to save _hundreds_ who might be too injured to fight another battle. Worse still, they would have achieved *nothing* because killing ten thousand darkspawn does absolutely nothing to stop the Blight - the only way to win is to kill the archdemon behind it.

The 1st game had an amazing story, and set ammo for further titles, the 2nd was also fun, and much less difficult, but had a very petty story for half of it, the other was also amazing, but you half to play to get there. The 3rd was probably convieved before 2, but needed some characters to appear early and yadee da. It is still a good game tho. Basically, Dragon Age is an epic series, with aawe inspiring heroes, and scumbag villans. You can make very interesting friends foes. You can be good or evil. And its your story. I love it. EA might charge a lot of money, but theres no deneying that they make good games.

@@inumi2235 Bioware makes good games. In my eyes, EA takes already great game series and turns them into cash cows that are husks of their former glory. examples: Star Wars Battlefront Dragon Age II (Not saying it's a bad game, but compared to Origins....no) Mass Effect Andromeda I have more, but these are the worst cases, the big reasons I hate EA (and I'm a pretty easy going person, it takes a LOT for me to say that I hate something)

I'm really looking forward to Inquisition, but from what I've seen so far from it, this dark fantasy theme, the seriousness, this atmosphere (with this brownish color theme) is gone forever. It was sacrificed on the altar of flashiness, radiant color theme, action orientation and a bit of airy-fairiness. Thankfully, according to the reviews, everything else in Inqiuisition is great.
@bclinguist10 жыл бұрын
The Darkspawn were what cemented the tone of the first game. There was a dark, sober maturity to it all: stop them, or the world dies in a tide of blood. They were relegated to minor nuisance in the next two installments, and those games' respective villains don't hold a candle to them.
@amarillo31510 жыл бұрын

+Peter Feher Wow, thank you for the upvotes and responses! I finished the game a few weeks ago, so I can post my opinion of DA:I. It was good, but it was also bleeding from several wounds. Mostly technical ones. I started playing months after the release, in hopes of avoiding them, but with no avail. First, bugs everywhere, and the graphical ones were the least of the problems. Companions frequently froze in combat, where I had to give a "jump" order to 'unfreeze' them, NPC-s glitched through obstacles and/or teleported; if the game didn't like where I casted a spell, it just teleported me elsewhere, and these happened frequently. (Or was it just my copy?) Second, the tactical camera was terrible, I won't even start saying why, if you played the game, you know already. But the game itself was complex, huge, and calling for you to explore it. The lore is still there, plus we got a crafting system, and I could go on and on, as this game had a lot of content. 7/10. Without the technical problems it could've been a 8.5/10, so in my opinion it still wouldn't have been as good as Origins, mostly for the reasons I wrote in the main comment.

Cailan had no reason to lead the charge other than his fantasy of a heroic death 'ending the blight' (that they couldn't end there in the first place). To make it worse, you only discover Cailen's own ambitions in Return To Ostagar, so he gets to be a martyr and Loghain the villain. What followed was Loghain's ignorance of how a blight actually worked, trying to kill the only group who could properly an archdemon (and all the rest).

DATskorge Correct.But what about when he sent a poisoner to poison Arl Eamon? Yes his withdrawal from the Ostagar battle was a clever move but king Cailan is, well was, a symbol of morale for Ferelden. He could have rescued him and then flee. He did many things that point him out like a traitor. He was thinking for the good of ferelden without thinking its people.He waited for the dark spawn at Denerim while the whole land was on fire.Because of him Lothering will never be civilized again.Because of him so many died and many faced him as a threat because he left the king to die. Cailan was naive and fool to believe that he could defeat the evil but he didn't deserve to die like this. The whole story proves that Loghain went crazy after Ostagar. He was selling his own people as slaves to the Tevinter for money. He left some soldiers to look out grey wardens and not to protect the civilians or at least evacuate them? He poisoned arl Eamon while he could explain him and perhaps convince him to talk to Cailan? He triggered a civil war and let the civilians outside the Denerim to the Maker's mercy. He was thinking for the good of the land but instead he destroyed it.

And the kings army representing Dragon age origins. Final scene of the battle. "The end is near, soon it will all be over. Dragon age 2 is upon us. Dragon age 2 didn't have a lot of development time and was rushed, inquisition is their first time going open world and they tried to appeal to casuals, they've already noted a lot of the mistakes in inquisition like the mmo quests so i think da4 may surpass or at least equal origins based on them learning from their mistakes and having more time to make it

Man this takes me back. It was so epic playing this for the first time. Man though the thing that sucks about what happened to Cailan and Duncan is that the plan actually probably would have worked if Loghain didn't decide to betray him. Plus the other country, Orlais was actually going to send aid to Ferelden.
@brahmantyoihsan59383 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't have worked. By the time the signal was lit, most of the Grey Wardens and the King's force would have perished already. The Hammer and Anvil strategy would have failed because the "Anvil" had been broken. Waiting for Orlais' reinforcement was not an option, because: 1. First and foremost, the darkspawn would not wait for them to be ready. The reinforcement would never have made it in time for the battle of Ostagar. 2. There would not be any trust or cooperation between the two armies, given their recent history in the Fereldan Occupation and Rebellion. 3. Orlais may use this opportunity to invade Ferelden again, despite the ongoing Blight. 4. Accepting the reinforcement means Ferelden would be heavily indebted to Orlais. Refusal to pay this debt means Orlais would have casus belli to restart the war, and Ferelden would lose any support or justification for the next rebellion.

@brahmantyoihsan59383 жыл бұрын
The tactic itself was not bad, it's the execution that went terribly wrong. They were supposed to stand their ground and lure the darkspawn into a killzone. Loghain would then deliver the decisive blow with his men while the enemy is trapped between the two forces and the fortress wall. Simply put, it was a "Hammer and Anvil" strategy. Unfortunately, they made some fatal mistakes. Not only did the defenders charged forward and away from the fortress wall, the Wardens also failed to light the beacon in time. By the time the signal came, most of the defenders would have died already; their "Hammer and Anvil" strategy would not work because the "Anvil" had been broken.
