I watch your stuff since BG3 EA and I am happy for you liking it. I personally don't care for this game, bc Bioware isn't what they were 20 years ago and after DA:O they kept disappointing fans in aim of gathering more sales by focussing on average players. The game doesn't look bad, but I am pretty sure alot of former fans are just fed up and lost interest like me for this diluted experience as the newest nail in the coffin of classic Bioware. Previous game allowed you to directly control other party members. So if you wanted a change from your archer or get a taste what is like to play as another class you could it. Now it's not possible. And companions are doing no damage by themselves, they are just for combos. From party RPG to action reflex gameplay is a huge change.
@HyouVizer3 ай бұрын
Do the companions even take damage, can they die in combat? I have yet to see either so far
@nickrubin73123 ай бұрын
For the speed of combat they are going for, it is impossible to implement a switch. Also because they are not really fully developed entities mechanically, shorter skill, fewer item slots But, I agree, that from the design approach and ideas and genre staples, including previous DA games in the series, this is not a party-based RPG. Strictly from combat perspective. Not only because they barely deal any damage in combat, but because they don't show any RP identity they are assigned by the devs: mage killer, grey warden, detective, necromancer... where is the realization of this RP aspect in combat in supposedly party-based RPG? And that's the one thing that actually makes me a bit sad about the system, even tho there are plenty of aspects to like (also skill tree looks kind of meh, but that's another thing, and unlike companions in combat, it can't be fixed). It completely denies the idea that in party-based RPG encounter is an extension of RP choices of party compositions, and thus companions, class/subclass and skill picks. The party of 2 rogues and ranger shouldn't play like the party of 2 warriors and 1 rogue. Right now it looks like main character and companion 1 and companion 2, but outside of combat it is Rook and two badass uniquely specialized fully developed personalities with their own set of skills. Doesn't make any sense in any modern RPG. This is deliberate design choice, I get what they are going for, but I wish companions were actually "their own people" in case of this approach, like game director said, because right now they look like they are always in need of the assistance of the main character who actually does all the job (which is also completely negating the idea of playing as support in combat, gotta do flips and rolls and doges as a DPS mage, I guess).
@Ashelsu3 ай бұрын
@@nickrubin7312 Well, yes. In DA2 I could play say support CC mage (basically Bethany's build, force + support magic) while companions were killing stuff. Now despite return of healing magic I can't. If for example we take holy trinity (tank, DD and healer), healer and pure tank are eliminated, reducing role-play. So now we have mage DD, rogue DD and warrior DD who just use different weapons. You have to deal damage in action combat. It's like playing solo while companions are walking primers and detonators who will probably resurface during cutscenes. Oh, can't wait to see how Neve is going full grasshopper mode with prostetic leg.

Looks absolutely awfull. Too fast action oriented. (If we go the action route, then a more Dragons Dogma 2 pace would have been a be better choise to me at least.) The two party members are just somewhere around (no sense of being a party anymore) and they instantly teleport on target for skill use. At this point they are just extra skills to you. So bad. Mass Effect has way more of a party feeling with your allies as the games are cover based shooters in the trilogy. So you mostly stay together. The sword and shield Champion gameplay looks way out of place of what it should be. You are rolling, dodging and jumping contantly. Like what on earth is this bs. Heavy armor fantasy sword and shield character should feel more grounded and tanky instead of this highly agile style. I am not getting any identity/difference of playstyle from this when compared to rogue. How is this a rpg if I do not get what the playstyle of a heavy armor warrior is considered to be. The point of a champion, berserker, rogue, archer, mage, healer etc. in games/books/movies is that they represent a specific idea and difference in combat, mentality, placement and role in a party. Sure there are nuances on how each of them are portrayed but the one in this video is not a Champion using a sword and shield in my opinion. If this was a rogue class with sword and shield with leather armor I would understand more on the combat style. Sigh. And the pause UI is way too busy and spread around the screen. Difficult to read and it requires you to scan the whole screen to find stuff instead of a specific section. This kind of UI only works with mobile games where you can see the whole screen easily with minimal eye movement. And where you need spread button/skill placement for avoiding accidental inputs with touch screens.

Knowing the games that the gameplay was said to be inspiration for combat I was expecting something like this. You can't control characters anymore as a trade-off to make it more realistic, but you can take control of how they fight when needed. Especially to string together a skill chain. The UI isn't amazingly complex, but it is crisp and clean and for someone with double vision I appreciate it. Those who play additionally with a keyboard & mouse will be able to separately keybind mage, rouge and warrior. I am playing for the storyline and the settings allow me to not have to really worry about gameplay if I don't like the system. Some characters look good some and not so much. Again I am playing for story and the graphics don't cause extra stress visually so I am good. I can also play this on my Steam Deck, allowing me to move locations when I am in pain. I do understand that most people have different expectations than me, but it doesn't make the game worthless. I do sympathize with those who aren't happy with what they see. It does put a dampener on the experience of something you spent so much time investing in to not be excited about it. However, it is hard to say how the game will actually be until we get the game to actually hate the game. If you go into the game determined to hate it you probably will. If you allow yourself to find good points in the game like Wolfheart, you may end up liking it. So perhaps wait until it comes out, wait to see what the game looks like from other people's playthroughs? Just to make sure you for really don't like the game, rather than adopting other people's hatred for the game. People are complaining there is not something in the game or any information on it, when it is clearly stated on the website there is or in an interview. I see so many comments like that it is frustrating. People are angry for no reason, because someone told them to be. Also if you find content creators who hyper focus on the lore of Dragon Age it does help to counter some things that you don't think you will like in the game. That is what I have been doing to counter all this negativity. Good luck to those who are still not sure about the game! *Edited for typos, as my vision doesn't always allow me to see them even when actively looking for them.

> I am playing for the storyline and the settings allow me to not have to really worry about gameplay You see, that's the thing, storyline and player driven narrative depending on player agency are not the same I don't mind people saying this, but I would like to elaborate that this expression, from the design POV, doesn't make any sense Dialogue system, approval system, codex system (if there is any), transmog, inventory management, equipment management, party composition management for the missions, and so on and many more - these are gameplay systems, this is all gameplay, story itself, without system doesn't play and you cannot not to worry about gameplay if you play for the story, because you affect the narrative by using gameplay systems. There is no way around them. One might say that they don't worry about combat, and it is fair enough. But combat is just a party of gameplay, it isn't equated to gameplay and never was. It is common misconception by the players, that's for sure. And some game designers, like Josh Sawyer, would even say that aesthetics are part of gameplay as well (with which I would strongly disagree btw, with a lot of his points as of late, actually). About opinions. I, personally, like what I see, a lot. But, I have some issues with what I've seen. I can wait and not write my opinion about them, if that frustrates someone, but then again, I don't think I should. Personally, I don't just jump, there is certain analysis, and I've played plenty of party-based RPGs (plenty!) and went in depths of learning about how they were designed to have an informed opinion on things like progression system or encounter design. Why shouldn't I express some of my reservations, or even doubts, alongside complimentary comments, based on what I see. We can go in depth about presented skill tree, but it would take enormous amount of time and it isn't the place. I know how it would work, I played the games that have the same, no need to see more - I know, based on reveal, it isn't some innovation they are going for. Same with realization of companion class/race identity through combat (at least on the "feels" level), which enhances RP experience of the player, and makes party-composition choice meaningful, which is kind of staple in party-based RPG, at least western party-based RPG. And so on, but YT comments on the personal channels isn't the place, on r/dragon age probably also not the place. So yeah, I just express my personal opinion as I can, without the goal to frustrate or annoy someone, and as informed as possible. That's all there is, I don't hate, always say I like, and usually state what I like, but there is certain analysis that is required, hyper positive approach doesn't excite me at all. Somehow you present it as "find good points, and you like it" vs "any bad point frustrating me, because people hating for no reason". Yeah, I like it, my I just analyze it fairly, especially as the one who plays the game for the game and doesn't separate narrative and gameplay as tho their intertwining shouldn't be the ideal form of what RPG game should actually be?

DA2/DAI both felt like they wanted to be action games but never fully committed to it (more so DAI but DA2 was clearly hinting a move in that direction). I’d rather they focus on a single style and flesh it out instead of giving us a weird hybrid of tactical and action.. regardless idk why people are so butthurt like combat in any of the 3 games is anything stellar, it’s never been the selling point of DA imo.. hopefully we get a good story

The dark spawn of this game reminds me of the monsters of Sunset overdrive very cartoonish, I feel like just changing around the colors of the monsters designs would help a lot like the red tomato eyes and change it into black deep sunken eyes and the extremely white skin it especially looks weird on the small creatures change it to a more gray or ashy tone but that’s not the only problems I have with the game companions have no health bar soooo immortal…. wow so intuitive so progressive in the gaming genre, I play mage in these games and frankly it’s not enough abilities, three is not enough for a mage ( I waited to make a judgment because a certain KZbinr said there aren’t only three and they are right they are technically “four” and everything else is passive ) and last, but not least why don’t companions have a helmet option….. so your character is the only one that wears helmets…?

Personally I have come to think of the term Action RPG as an oxymoron over the years. When I work on honing instinctual reactions in fights, I don't develop a meaningful personal style, it's just hours and hours of repetetive hack and slash. In ARPGs gamemakers also tend to be reluctant to pull you out of that flow to enter meaningful discussions or survey the area and NPCs for alternative approaches or discussions. The RPG in ARPG tends to be silent, and boil down to some face customization and power choices. I'm not convinced that Veilguard is more than that yet. While ARPGs could entertain me some 25 years ago, they haven't scratched an itch for a long time. Still on the fence on this one. I will probably buy it and have fun for an hour or two and drop out when the feeling of endlessly going through the motions to defeat enemies sets in.

I've noticed that elves have human looking facial features now. They also look broader and don't have these otherworldly slender proportions. I don't know if I consider that a good thing because one hand, I think they look better, but, on the other, I feel like the way they used to look was more iconic.

Veilguard has all races with human faces and racial features tacked on. Withthat elf warrior longhair covering ger ears most of the time, you'd think human first glance. The male mage qunari Rook, has human ears, they aren't pointy. Elves are suppose to have thin oval slender facial structures, while Qunari have wide dominant facial features, both are gone here. I wonder what custom Rook dwarves will look like.

@@cjmartz86 Same here. The game doesn't convince me on any level. For me this has nothing to do with Dragon Age. If it had any other name, you wouldn't even know that this is a game from the Dragon Age franchise. I was out at first, but this is the first video I've seen where you can see the full extent to which you can control your companions in combat. You can't position them and take advantage of the terrain Sun Tzu style, but this is more than just having Hawk and Loghain follow you around. You can target with them and control their special abilities, though the number of ability slots is severely lacking. It looks like a slick interface. Now if we can switch out indisputably fugly Taash and switch in the stunning Qwydion I'd be very happy.

The rpg mechanics feel so watered down at this point idk if it even really qualifies. Like the classes for example. Most of these classes are designed around the idea of team party tactics. Having tanks for frontline and aggro. Rogues for single target dps and utility. Mages for aoe dps and control. Warriors feel pointless. Why play a tank when there is no party to tank for. Do companions even have health? And they didn't seem to contribute much damage anyway. I haven't seen anything about rogues being able to stealth or lockpick. So they have been essentially reduced to either a finesse fighter or an archer. Also warriors and rogues have access to magical abilities apparently. Doesn't that sort if devalue the purpose of mages? And it contradicts basic lore about mages being specific individuals born with a connection to the fade and therefore able to use magic.

Overall I’ll be buying and playing this, because of how emotionally invested I am in the story. However, I have no doubt this will be the last BioWare game I’ll buy. They consistently insult our intelligence and degrade beloved dragon age systems and show they didn’t learn anything from previous failures. Baldurs Gate 3 really changed my outlook on games, and shows that devs that truly care about their community have no reason not to take input and put it to use. It made me sour about some companies that just release unacceptable quality of games. So I will buy and play Veilguard, and I hope I’m wrong and it just blows expectations out of the water. But without change and a conscious decision to start giving a damn about us again, that’ll be the end of my BioWare support personally, as sad as I am about that. 😢

@violetbliss43993 ай бұрын
I think it's really easy actually. If you like ME2-3, Andromeda combat, you will probably like this combat. It is the exact same system for companions, so it's nothing new, and the combos has been a thing increasingly since then as well in those games. I know mentioning Andromeda is a no no but the combat in it was the least of its problems. To add, I actually think it looks a lot like Kingdoms of Amalur combat that's polished. Now if you want top down isometric gameplay this is obviously not the right game. I've never really had that attachment to this series; I found even DAO to be a lot more hack and slash than older RPGs, unless you felt like micromanaging it. In fact its strongest combat aspect was that it had more robust autoplay settings than eg. BG2 did. I think the largest departure is the graphical style. Not the contents, it looks like the game will still deal with bleak concepts, but the style is definitely a little more colourcoded. I'll have to try it to know how I really feel. If I have one peeve that immediately stands out, it's not really one that's only in Veilguard, but... I don't think there is anything at all to be gained by UI art like this in a fantasy game, or rather, that in more modern rpgs it's like they look a little bit too contrasty with the actual game sometimes, like with textboxes or ui art. It's more like tech you'd find in a sci fi game, though maybe they intend it to be like a magic veil theme. Still, I think it could have a lot more personality to it.
