they didn't, that article was likely brought to Time. meaning somebody paid to have it put on there, normally Time magazine don't really bother with gaming, but considering everything is political now a days, that's likely the only reason it's on there.
@EmoBearRightsАй бұрын
They probably did ya know because despite what all the critics online would have you believe most people who actually played the game enjoyed. Some of them even played Origins and all of the other DA games. I know me and my mate aren't a representative sample (nor are necessarily all the moaning dudebros) but we both did. Is it prefect and could some things be improved - sure - but that doesn't mean it's unworthy of a GOTY. Also let's face gamer culture has some effing toxic elements which GG showed in abundance so let's not pretend that the gaming community is the ultimate arbiter of what a good game is or is above politics.

About DA:Veilguar's combat... I'm 40 y.o. and I'm really bad at gaming, although I really like gaming. Because of my extremely poor degraded reaction I literally cannot play most games I'd like to play - at all. For example, I cannot play through first three missions of Outriders (basically tutorial), even on the lowest difficulty. So when it goes to actions of any kind, I'm stuck with Diablo 3, Borderlands 1-3 (campaigns, not endgame) and, miraculously, Veilguard. I can play it! On default (3d) ! So maybe that's why most people dislike its combat, while for me it's really fun and challenging. And my first playthrough was full light armor sniper build - a glasscanon. Right from the start it was hard as hell, after 30 or even 40 hours I started to oneshot medium threat deamons / darkspawns, while all giants remained huge sweat generators to the very end. All my point is: perception of veilguard's combat quality is... very subjective. And yeah, I'm probably some kind of semi-disabled minority (even if I have all my limbs and eyes on their place), but somehow I doubt that total number of players like me is completely negligible. P.S. There were days when I was speedrunning every single fps / fighting on highest possible difficulty, but those days are long gone, unfortunately :(

I probably liked veilguard more than most. I can't say if its game of the year or not, because i didnt really play many other games, still playing last years games the majority of this year. I definitely think there were problems in the game that I wouldn't expect from a game of the year, so I wouldn't volunteer it into that category. I do think the game is maybe two pre-ending DLCs/expansions away from being a top 10 game for me (a few more systems, a few more types of enemies and paths, choices, etc.), but unfortunately we wont get those. That being said, this is an excellent blueprint for the next game, i don't think they need to reinvent the wheel again or anything.

The marketing is just doing their job. They probably realized that they can't sell Veilguard to people that play games and already knowVeilguard is about, so now their target audience are those disconnected from gaming. Paying up to make it a game of the year in non-gaming journal is a way to go. All so they can put on the sticker of "time's game of the year". It's certainly a better strategy that trying sell it to players who already decided that Veilguard isn't worth their time and moved on.

I do enjoy Veilguard for what it is and do think it's a solid game at the end of the day despite its flaws, but yeah don't know about it being on the level of a game of the year kind of game (also had to pause the video a sec just looking at the starting praise for the Veilguard being "most advanced character creator"; I do enjoy its character creator, but as someone who has Dragon's Dogma 2, I can fully attest to the fact DD2 is the one that has the more advanced character creator, I've had some really distinct and visually interesting pawns join me in my adventures).
