I wasn't disappointed when I watched this movie at the cinema because I went in with low expectations. That being said the failure of this movie also paved the way for the success of live action One Piece. It was a guide of what not to do. Last year before One Piece dropped on Netflix I was talking to a guy who I know who is a huge One Piece fan. He's in his early 20's and I'm in my mid 30's. He said to me that he was unsure on if it was going to be any good and I said to him whether it turns out good or not be thankful they're trying to adapt One Piece semi faithfully and not doing what Fox did with Dragonball.

Dragon Ball evolution was not as terrible as you think. It's not great either but it was okay. It is a semi-enjoyable movie. The problem is that people don't know how to pretend it's not related to Dragon Ball. If the movie was called Chi-Fighters Evolution and all the characters had different names, then maybe everyone would like it. It can be a good movie without being a good Dragon Ball movie.

@@DLFLux . Good point on it being my opinion. Yes but it's mostly only Dragon Ball in name and neither anything nor anyone has any actual similarities to their anime/manga versions. DB Evolution Yamcha is only Yamcha in name. DB Evolution Goku is only Goku by name. They are not actually the same characters and it's not actually a Dragon Ball movie. The only connections it has to Dragon Ball are it's title, it's character names, and the idea of magic balls with a wish granting dragon.

While this film was a dumpster fire trash heap, hearing that Justin Chatwin only thought to learn about the character of Goku _after_ he had gotten cast into the role makes me lose A LOT of respect for him. Why would he audition for something he didn't know anything ABOUT? It sounds like he wasn't familiar with the _Dragonball_ franchise as a whole. I felt the same about Jennifer Lawrence playing Mystique. Jennifer admitted to not knowing anything about the character of Mystique and didn't even bother researching the character. She later watched Rebecca Romijin Stamos' performance and says that she was shocked because Rebecca played the character as a fem fatale while Jennifer says that she herself was acting sweet and shy in her auditions. (She later got the role after watching Rebecca's performance).

If it was a masterpiece it would've been a trilogy how it originally intended. Justin Chatwin is a good actor, and I respect his determination and research in order to play the role as best as he could and it sucks how bad they were screwed over. HOWEVER, and I know nobody cares and not many people even know about this, BUT there were 3 previous live action Dragon Ball films that are foreign films that are actually WORSE than Evolution. Fight Son Goku Win Son Goku, Dragon Ball The Magic Begins and Goku Vs. Super Mario are literally WORSE. But yeah Evolution is not what we as fans wanted as a live action Dragon Ball movie, in my opinion though it's just an ok movie. The kamehameha at the end was pretty decent though. The chant and effect was decent but the forward effect didn't make a lot of sense. Here's a cool fact, the actor who plays Piccolo also voices Zamas in Dragon Ball Super. I thought he was an ok Piccolo too considering what we got.

If you remove the DB branding, Evolution is just a normal mid-tier movie that isn't particularly bad. With source material, Evolution has more consistent characters and more characters that aren't regressed or changed from the original (for example DBS made goku an idiot, vegeta forget his buu arc development and almost no character is anything like they should be, but in evolution you have at least a few like Yamcha who are pretty true to the original and consistent throughout the whole movie with no out of character moments) DBE is only an hour and a half, DBS is 131 episodes of torture DBE still has less plot holes with the source material than super. Of course, super is better in maybe a few regards, but overall, DBE is the better product overall

It had way more cultural impact than Yu Yu Hakusho ever did, and I loved Yu Yu Hakusho. But it *never* had the impact Dragon Ball had, and this is talking about before Super. Trust me, DB wouldn't fade into obscurity like Yu Yu Hakusho did. Bandai and Toei wouldn't let their biggest cash cow fade into obscurity.

Movie was so bad. Toriyama had to come out of retirement to clean up the name again to stop the evil of those money hungry corporates. But also now with toriyama gone, akio iyoku is fighting to make more dragon ball super against the other money hungry people who want no dbs anime for years
