I should also mention that in the manga and in the anime, Son Goku had a monkey's tail as a child when his grandfather found him in his escape pod since he was part of the Saiyan race. And in the source material, it wasn't a solar eclipse that allowed Goku to turn into the great ape, it was a full moon that began the transformation sequence and the only way to turn Goku back into a human, was to cut off his tail

Don't forget that Master Roshi under the guise of Jackie Chun destroyed the moon to turn Goku back to normal during the 21 WT and Piccolo destroyed the moon to prevent Nappa and Vegeta from using the moon to turn into great apes until Vegeta created that artificial moon.

And goku (his pre-awesome hero days) was never a serious kid/teen around his master/friends. He grew up being raised by an old man, never went to school and spent his time practicing martial art. He didn’t knew much about the outside world hence making him socially awkward in a funny way. While in the live action, he was portrayed as mediocre teen who wear jacket to school with the most mediocre hairstyle.

Most money goes towards Chow Yun Fat, first class seats for the writer/producer/and director, drugs, prostitution, more drugs, ransom money from a kidnapped crew, casket for the dead crew, more drugs, and few left for the cast. Goku being in an American High School has led me to win many arguments with my wife when she gets angry about the things the Lord of The Rings movies didn't have that was in the books. No Krillin is telling. Look at the live-action American Guyver movies. They left out Tetsuro. It should be a rule: Do NOT remove the main character's best friend. They are there for reasons. And why didn't they make Ernie Hudson's character Chaiotzu? Turn into the skid. Get that so wrong its just funny. Should be noted: Justin Chatwin's character in Shameless has an alias that is revealed much later in that series. The Kakarot jokes write themselves.

The main problem fans have is that it's not faithful but yeah that makes sense, the story of dragon ball spans many yrs and you'd have to change some things to make it work as a film. I'm not saying the movie was perfect but at least they made master roshi a perverted martial arts master, piccolo performance was good, and the story loosely followed the manga. Goku and Bulma meet, they have an altercation, Goku doesn't wanna give up his 4 star ball because it's sentimental and agrees to help Bulma find the rest. But again, when I was a kid I loved mortal Kombat and super Mario bros movie so the cheesiness feels nostalgic for me

The studio should have embraced producer Stephen Chow’s casting and creative input on the movie. His Hong Kong movie Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons which came out 4 years later embraced the quirkiness and spirit of the anime more than that Americanized abomination. Since he was originally approached to direct the movie, but lost creative control, his adaptation of the Monkey King story really felt like a direct jab at US studios and especially how 20th Century Fox sidelined him.

I watched this some years back out of morbid curiosity. It was somehow worse than I had heard, both as a fan of Dragon Ball/DBZ, and just in general. Bulma's name is even more ridiculous if you know that Bulma > Buruma > Bloomers. Basically, her name is 'Underwear Underwear'. About the only thing in this movie that's (mostly) on point is Roshi's horniness; the movie toned that down, actually. Only a masochist would watch it more than once, and only a sadist would recommend it to anyone. And I'm speaking as someone with lower standards than most when it comes to movies and TV.

For a non-dragon ball fan, this was a pretty good review of that abomination of a movie. I have to admit, Chow Yun-fat as Master Roshi was relatively close to the character he was supposed to be. Respect to him for clearly reading the source material and trying to do his damn job, unlike everyone else who "acted" in this abomination of a movie, who couldn't be bothered to look up what character they are portraying at all. Just a little context in case you didn't find it while doing your research, this "movie" supposedly follows the plotline of the original Dragon Ball series. Where Goku was supposed to be 11, not 18 and Bulma was 16 and Chi-Chi was 10 (when they first met). Krilin he meets when he goes to study with Roshi, so he should have been present in this movie. Incidently, the other characters you showed at the end: Freeza and Vegeta, are all Dragon Ball Z characters, who won't show up for like 16 more years (when Goku is around 27, happily married to Chi-Chi and has a son). Hope that helps someone at least place where in the chronology this abomination supposedly takes place. Bonus Fact: Goku's grandpa is not killed by Piccolo, but is in fact killed by Goku (by accident) when he turns into the great ape Oozaru one night due to the presence of a full moon. When his son is born, Goku names his son after his grandpa - Gohan.

I'm a big fan of the DBZ. I knew the movie was going to be bad but I still bought the movie on blue ray. I have no problems with the actors in general, it's the directors and writer's fault, as with all bad movies. As an anime fan, all characters in anime don't look Japanese to me, so "white washing" isn't a thing to me. Characters can be "white" or "Japanese" interchangeably. Honestly most modern anime characters look more "white" then Japanese anyways. But I don't sweat the small stuff, we're all human so color doesn't matter.

It's like an abominable mishmash of both things but done in a way that insured neither side would like. It set DB back over a decade and was just one of the worst films ever made, being a complete waste of everything involved in it's creation. 😂
