The true live-action Dragon Ball that Toriyama really wanted is one where Jackie Chan portrays Son Goku (he sees no one else except Chan for the role according to Toriyama), even Chan was on-board with that idea because he also loves both the story and character. The best opportunity for that to happen was to make Dragon Ball GT (1996 - 97) as a live-action series instead of an anime. Just so that Leonardo DiCaprio could also play the role of Trunks.

Ok so lemme tell you something, in the original show and manga, Goku is basically a retarded 10 year old who's been living in the woods for the past few years cause he went great ape and squished Gohan (grandpa gohan, not his kid gohan) He's just really stupid, and he meets Chi Chi when he goes to get the dragon ball that Chi Chi's dad, the Ox King has. Chi Chi tries to fight him, and chi chi is also 10 or so, and she loses. Then Goku taps on her vagina to see if she was a girl. Skip forward to when Goku is 18, and he enters the world martial arts tournament and fights her, not realizing its her, beats her in the match, then she tells him who she is, and then he's like, "oh yeah, you're a pretty lady and I promised to marry you at some point and then just ran off. Oh, and you love me? Cool. Let's get hitched." Then we skip to the beginning of DBZ and it turns out he has a kid now. But does not know the meaning of the word sex. So again, he's still kinda retarded. He got dropped on his head as a baby so it makes some sense, but still. Not exactly a good relationship model.

Actually, Goku was 16 when he defeated King Piccolo. If anything, he should look older in the manga. Not that this justifies this horrid shit stain of a movie in any regard, but yeah. Edit: to elaborate, Goku defeated King Piccolo on May 9th, Age 753, and was born sometime in Age 736. If he was born early in the year, he might have even been 17 by then. Also, it should be noted that while in the manga he was born in Age 736, "Bardock: Father of Goku" implies that he was born in Age 737 (he was a newborn when Planet Vegeta was destroyed), which would make him 15-16 by the defeat of Piccolo.

It wasn't the director it was the script writer, Ben Ramsay. Director James Wong stays silent on the matter. Nobody that worked this movie, writers, directors, producers and actors knew nothing about it. Fun fact: As of this post, Disney owns the rights to make a live action dragonball. They acquired it when disney bought 20 century fox in 2019. Don't worry, Disney is has no plans to make a dragonball film and are going to sit on the rights until expiration.

This movie could have worked, if... Goku had no idea who he really was, and his grandpa wanted to keep that from him. To protect him from his savage past.. Then, having him go to school would have made sense, not showing us their training before hand, and when Goku gets into a fight, he shows off unique abilities that get unlocked because he was in a fight or flight scenario and his natural instincts kicked in. When grandpa dies, and he meets Bulma they can go to Master R. Island, Master R. knowing Grandpa Gohan can explain Goku's Ape origins and powers, the stuff Grandpa Gohan knew at least, and we could have went from there. Just saying, they could have at least saved that mistake had they gone that route.

You know what? I’m fine with redesigning characters because some designs just doesn’t work well in a life action setting. For example, Transformers. Their designs were decent and suits the realistic feel that they’re supposed to give off. Until the entire Knight bullshit after 4 and 5. But their biggest sin is of course flipping off the source material. Goku is basically fueled by hormones, Chichi is a fight slut, Bulma is just there only for her dragon ball locator, Yamcha was somehow done way dirtier then what they did to him after Z, Krillin, Tien and Chiaotzu weren’t even in the movie (but that’s a bright side from a certain point of view), Piccolo and Mai were sh*t villains and I actually don’t mind Roshi that much. The reason why I’m fine with him is probably because the rest of the cast were so terrible that his character felt like a masterpiece in comparison.
