In regards to Takahashi, I completely get the worries about his style not fitting, and I agree, but I personally don’t really care if it does or not. I absolutely love the styles of almost every animator on this production and I would sacrifice my immersion just to see all of them demonstrate their best work and unique approaches. One of my favourite parts of the dragon ball manga is that Toriyama’s style shifts depending on the subject matter, and if they can continue to do that in a form as condensed as one film, this new era of dragon ball will certainly turn out to be a great one.

So you want for super to continue as movies ? that would be cool but i don't know , a movie of this quality is expensive . I would love multi part movies but again too much money would be needed , it will most likely continue with tv format but hopefully with all the money they will earn with this movie ( and i assume this movie will make a ton of money ) that we can get a quality in art , animation , story etc more closer to the movie especially in the art and animation , they could go the seasonal route too , like that it can have a bigger quality and consistency . They do seems to have a bigger production value as they have now a team made specifically only for db etc , so the future might be bright indeed .
@blarp79486 жыл бұрын
Alexandru Timofte well what I really meant was that if we can get a movie filled with all these different styles, that hopefully whatever comes next (be it more movies, the show continuing, or even a new show altogether), they’ll be more open to letting animators take their own approaches. I do think a seasonal show would be pretty cool, as the main thing bogging down Super wasn’t really it’s budget, but it’s constricted schedule. I’m sure the break will have opened that up a bit, but doing it seasonally could help the quality even further.

People seem to think they need to justify an artist in reaction to casual criticism like this, just because they like him - rather than seeing it objectively. I honestly don't dislike Takahashi but I don't feel his art style fits with the intended artstyle for the movie. His work is more dated toward the older Yamamuro era to me. My concerns is just wanting to see Shintani's work preserved and emphasize a new look to the series. The talk about the inconsistency being 'nostalgic' for some people or it looking 'awesome' because of its (unnecessary) detail, does not warrant it to me. If people will harp on model inconsistency when its bad, its hypocritical to defend it when its (to them) good.

@@Alaqeam Agreed. Honestly from my experience watching non-Toei anime inconsistency really isnt as prevalent as it is in other shows which is why it irks me a bit to see how scrambled DB still looks. There really isn't an excuse for this when most of the other actual DB movies were usually much more consistent. Especially the later ones. I don't see where people come from where they just thinks cool for the sake of it or just because it was Takahashi. James except that by going full details, you do lose something special that only minimalistic styles will give you. You can give a loose style animator plenty of time and he’s still not going to fill their character art with details. More art details doesn’t make it better art. For me, I prefer minimalistic art over detailed art with tons of shading on it. Let’s use OP for example. I love Tate’s and the minimalistic character design from the pre time skip more than Ichikawa, though I still like Ichikawa’s detailed approach.
@jesspeed6 жыл бұрын
James it does work. Ryou Onishi already proved that in the trailers. His work looks amazing in the trailer while respecting Shintani’s design. Multi tone shading never was the only way to make something look gritty and violent. Other shows like Mob Psycho and My Hero Academia are also examples of shows that doesn’t have fully detailed character designs and makes the show look gritty as hell. The level of freedom given to animators because of that style is surreal specially people like Yutaka Nakamura

Think about it, what DBZ scenes do you remember more? a big narrative scene with Masaki Sato, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Shida, Old Yamamuro, Kanno art, etc. or do you like the standard Naoki Tate art/random on model animator from that era?... Artwork leaves stronger memorable feelings if handled perfectly in terms of balance(artwork and movement/animation). So, I think about Takahashi as a guy who is doing/replacing Sato, Yamamuro and all of those guys from the old era that did such famous scenes we all know(SSJ Goku, Trunks killing Frieza, Vegeta and his Final Flash vs Cell, Gohan SSJ2, Kid Buu vs SSJ3 Goku, Raditz vs Picolo and Goku, etc). There is a LOT of heavy Takahashi art in this music video. While I think it looks good, I also think the consistency will be an issue to some degree. This issue, however, seems to stem from someone above the movie, perhaps Toei themselves. Today on Twitter Takahashi released a wonderful sketch of Super Saiyan Goku and it brings his work in line seamlessly with the new designs. During softer character moments a gentler and rounder art style makes sense. But during tense battle moments, Takahashi's artwork can really make us feel the rage and power that's coming from these characters. It makes me think of the grotesque, hyper-realistic closeups inserted into shows like Ren & Stimpy or Spongebob; it's there to make an impact when something more intense needs to be conveyed. I see these dramatic closeups from Takahashi in the same vein. Personally I love the fact that there are multiple styles within scenes. I understand the argument for consistency but I prefer the utilization of a variety of art styles to enhance the experience as needed.

Never has starting a video with "Birth of a God" playing in the background felt so satisfying. "Consistency." I don't know. Now that I'm noticing the inconsistencies between shots, I think I could learn to love them. In principle, this type of thing should be breaking my immersion with the film, but all I'm finding is that it pulls me in more because it adds this entirely new dimension to the experience for me. The unique quirks of each animator give it a very personal touch and almost tells a story on it's own. Something handcrafted instead of manufactured. Like the gnarled roots of a tree, spreading outwards organically. Chaotic, but beautiful if for no better reason than for forming a pattern like no other in the world. *I look forward* to seeing how each shot will be different and bring it's own surprises. But that's just me, and at that even I have limits. Consistency is very important, but I don't think it's relative absence will do anything but further this particular movie. And if it doesn't, then we can look forward to the next Dragon Ball Super movie getting the balance right. There are no mistakes.

I feel you're much more strict regarding this opinion on Yuya Takahashi's work than you ever were on Naoki Tate's, despite throughout your entire time critiquing Super, Tate's work is just as drastic a departure from not only the character sheets, but the entire movement style and aesthetic tone set by other animators which makes up the larger portion of the show. Your enjoyment of Tate's work, has given blinders that come off for Takahashi-- your willingness to afford artistic deviation from source material, is highly dependent on your personal tastes. I disagree with your opinion and I think you should try to be more objective. Conversely, I understand where you come from in forming these opinions on Takahashi's segments: however, I feel there's a certain look that's most reminiscent of the spirit of the show-- whether or not it happens to be your, or my favorite aesthetic-- and Takahashi channels it. I for one, don't feel Takahashi's style is jarring and would actually propose that it's everyone else's artwork that's causing any perceived disturbance. Calling the look outdated is an overstatement, because Dragon Ball's art style is unique to its franchise. It wasn't a product of culture, it created it. Whereas all these concepts you put forward about "modernizing" its look, is simply a euphemism for an homogenization; a washing of the actual unique artistic properties that made Dragon Ball a standout. I am passionately against your opinion here. And I don't say this with any intention to disrespect.

*a washing of the actual unique artistic properties that made Dragon Ball a standout.* Such as what? DB did not have its own style so much as it as it was more so just animated with older techniques, and modernizing it as he said would be trying to take advantage of the advancement of how Shounen anime is presented based on animators whom have done other actions shows, to experiment with. People have said it for years that Super looks dated in comparison to newer shows lie OPM and MHA, so there is no reason to not try and see what would work onto dragonball. You are one of the best youtubers in the anime community right now , one thing I like about takhasi design tho is it add flavor and power to theses characters when introduce for example when broly jumped in to his yellow eye form, takahashi shading and buu arc style made the form 10x more intense and really emphasize it while I feel as if that was drawn with the shintani style it wouldn’t have as much of an affect. The deviation in art style , makes these moment stand out from the rest of the film which for me in my opinion is a great touch.

I totally understand the standpoint of wanting more visual consistency, especially since this film is setting the bar much higher, in terms of the quality of the production. While I don't disagree with seeing this as a problem, I do find myself not caring much. This movie is going to be a smorgasbord of talented animators producing some truly astonishing work, and I'm just excited for whatever crazy imagery they throw my way. I love these new designs, but I also love Takahashi's old school approach, and I really want to see both highlighted on the big screen. Having that visual consistency is important, but it's also pretty clear at this point that it's not going to happen to the degree it probably should in this movie. Which is why I'm just going to enjoy it as a visual feast for my eyeballs, and not sweat it too much. If it's like suuuuper jarring, my opinion might change a bit, but as it stands I'll enjoy it for what it is and hope they take this more into consideration in the next movie. Oh, and I really appreciated how you handled this topic. When I saw you were going to do this on Twitter, I was a little worried how this was going to be addressed. But this came out super respectful and completely understandable, excellent work. Side note, I've quite liked what I've seen of Onishi so far, but I have to admit, I didn't really pay attention to him in Super. I think he'll have a much better time of standing out, now that he isn't working with garbage designs.

This video was very well crafted especially the Takahashi portion mostly because I didn't know there was drama about that at all. I for one don't really care has longest I'm starring at something incredibly appeling and animated to perfection.

I think the minor stylistic inconsistencies between animators on Broly makes it more interesting and brings more life and character to the movie. Also the cgi and realistic explosion look epic in this case. This movie is going to be a visual feast. I've been watching the video for "Blizzard" over and over again lol.

I am glad that Toei is aware of how popular Takahashi is as animator & trusted him with what is a huge part of this film. Shintani’s designs are definitely the cause of this nolstagic approach to Dragon Ball, but Takahashi really brings it home with paying homage to Dragon Ball Z in his style. Personally, I don’t care about his style not being consistent with the other animators; the man could do a film on his own.

That point you brought up about how it is all sequenced in the film is key here. This could easily work if there are large stretches of Takahashi and Onishi separately. The problem will only arise if they trade off every other shot and share the spotlight at the same time. THAT is when I could understand someone being annoyed.

Shintani's work is wonderful and extremely important for versatility in animation... I totally get that. I feel like Takahashi's work needs to stay on the extreme side, so that other animators can improve their own art style while maintaining the fluidity and flexibility of Shintani's character designs. You know how it goes, you surround yourself with the best, you'll eventually become the best.
@henryt.98216 жыл бұрын
Also to clarify, I think every animator has their own amazing/beautiful style. What I mean is that there's always an extremist in the group that does everything near perfectly. And with time, everyone starts to shift over towards that extreme side.
@henryt.98216 жыл бұрын
I feel everyone's style for the new series will sort of shift to the Takahashi-esque style, with their own personal characteristics of course. Imagine how wonderful that would be. Takashi's line work, Shintani's fluidity, Onishi's amazing animation, Shida's blah blah just about everything. Imagine combining the best of all these animators into the most amazing character design.

I have my reservations with the different art styles in this film but I will have to reserve final judgement until I see the the whole movie. I find the realistic 3D effects alot more jarring and it was something that instantly popped out at me in this new trailer. Ultimately for me if effects or art styles are to jarring of a change it ruins my immersion in the movie which is the real problem with visual inconsistency. Personally for me it is much easier for poorly implemented CG to do this than different art styles.

One other thing that's worth mentioning about animators breaking character Yamamuro's character sheets as opposed to Shintani's is that like you've said in the past there was only so much animators could do with the Super designs because they were so stiff etc so it made more sense for them to break them. I'm a bit conflicted about Takahashi's work on the film because I love what I've seen so far even if some of it is really inconsistent with the rest of it but he probably should've toned it down a little bit because it still looks great with less shading and it would make a huge difference blending in with the rest of the film

So long as the transitions from Takahashi to the other animators are smooth, I'll be happy to have the differences. I loved his work in the show specifically because he completely ignored the character sheets and gave us what we all remembered from the golden age of Dragon Ball. I do love the new designs, and I think the simplicity of them might make Takahashi's more extreme stuff work even better, so long as they do move along that scale of cartoony to serious and detailed that you mentioned, rather than jump from one to the next without a midpoint. And since I'm so hopeful for this new movie, my assumption has been that with all the effort and focus and talent they've clearly poured into this, that they would have already taken this into account. Guess I'll have to wait and see. What does worry me though is the cgi. I still have nightmares of Resurrection F.

My favorite thing is the Broly brush strokes, because it actually reminds me of early Dragon Ball and DBZ effects work, like when Piccolo sacrifices himself to save Gohan in the saiyan arc.

Yeah- yeah, Takahashi's super detailed art leads to an extreme diversion from the overall artistic consistency, making it look jarring an- DID YOU SEE THAT SSJG TRANSFORMATION!? Such an awesome and simple idea that I've thought of before, I wish I had seen that in the cinema.
@RioSlitherin6 жыл бұрын
I believe that Takashi can make some deviation for impact/close ups on those layers of shading, giving a more impacting feel to those sections of the films, but deviating too much on the film will defiantly have a poor impact on how the film should look like, with the lack of that layer shading on the new character designs that were officialize should be the majority of how the film should look like.
@moscosama12386 жыл бұрын
The reason the movie looks good at all is because of Takahashi's and other animators drawing away from the design sheets. There is such a big jump in quality when you go from Onishi (like at 9:18) to Takahashi's. Onishi's Goku at that frame is beyond horrible and is not a direction many people like. Even reviewers have said that the jump in artistic quality was jarring. Thing is, it isn't Takahashi's sections that are jarring, it's those going too deep into Shintani's model sheets (that horrendous base Goku with disgusting feature placement...yikes). I get it, what is the use of CD if their designs won't be followed at all. It brings about consistency issues that are CLEARLY visible. The fact though is that many (and i'd argue most) people prefer Yuya's approach. It's more going along Yamamuro's approach which when drawn in the manner Takahashi draws...looks 100x better than most. As for those who really hammer home the role of design sheets and how they should be referenced on an appropriate level, well, many people didn't feel the same way with Yamamuro's sheets. Not just talking about the Super series but the previous movies as well. You can say what you want, but the consistency was there and design sheets were followed to a proper extent (even without Yam's corrections). I mean, that's what his sheets were for right? Unfortunately, when it comes to this fandom, hypocrisy visits on a daily basis and i can guarantee that some (not all) who are really adamant about Takahashi's work causing a mess are the same ones that would praise someone who deviated away heavily from Yam's sheets. Can't have it both ways. Oh and spare me the "difference is the whole movie was drawn to look like it was one animator!" nonsense. You get the point I'm making here...if you're expecting someone to follow the sheets to some extent but praised someone who didn't do the same under the previous designer, then you have no basis of reality. Dragon Ball is not yet ready to go to full blown kiddy, toonish, cute, blobby, and young model sheets yet, that's why people like Takahashi are NEEDED in this film to bring us back to how DB should look like (IMO)...and that's where most of the visual praise of this movie is rightfully coming from (besides the effects work and direction). NOTE: If you really enjoy the more toonish, softer approach, then as Ajay said, more power to you! However, not everyone is on the same field as you are. As for the video itself, you did a great job laying out your thoughts on the situation, well done Ajay.

Whenever I see Takahashi's animation I get the biggest smile on my face. His vision of dragonball is what I also like to see. I love the other animators and their art style but takahashi just hits it right. His art is dragonball to so the more of it then the merrier for myself but I can completely understand where yourself and others are coming from.

An excellent breakdown as always Ajay. I'm extremely excited to hear your take on the full movie breakdown coming soon! The Takahashi debate is an interesting one as well. I'm torn as his style is the look I grew up with during the height on DBZ fandom in the US. Though I understand wanting the film to feel cohesive and not be quite so jarring during animator transitions. I'll save my final judgement once I've seen the film in theatres in January!

I feel as though Takahashi's style is great for highlighting really intense moments or motions, but should be dialed back a bit overall since it clashes quite a bit with the other segments. The sharpness of it makes me think of an exclamation point among a bunch of periods and commas compared to the overall softer art style of the film, great for those high tension moments. When you have it in your face for more then that it's uncomfortable because of the visual dissonance. This most likely won't be a problem for the younger and those apathetic to this kind of conversation, but those of us who analyze animation or are artists themselves this can make the movie a rough watch if they don't take care with the structure like you mentioned. Anyways, this was another great video. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work! :D

Coming at this as someone who works in film development (but with no background in animation), this all seems like an issue of tone rather than structure. If they're able to have the SSG Goku fight flip from playful to serious, they can manage the style changes. Conversely, if they fumble the tonal evolution of the narrative at any point, then even the stylistic transitions with entire set-piece changes could fall flat. Tonal shifts are often impossible to glean from trailers, though. The tone of the overall movie can be showcased in a trailer, but not its transitional beats. As such, I don't see much reason for anyone to form a solid opinion on any of this. This video is a good discussion of the issue, though.
