@@TortaHorta Ahhahah man I love DBZA but you need to get real. Toei animation and Jump magazine don't give a flying fuck about the western market. What they offer and what they wanna do is capture the japanese market. They did super because DB was always super popular in Japan and the author (Toriyama) wanted to bring back in the spotlight what was lost with DBZ (characters and unique transformation, hence muten roshi having a significant role and getting rid of transformation to introduce the SSG). DBS was created because battle of god worked well and nothing more. Battle of God was released in 2013, back then DBZA was barely finished with Freeza arc and just started introducing future trunks.

I won't lie, one of my favorite moments in the series is how they handled Gohan's SS2 transformation, and the leadup to it with Android 16. I left a big long comment about it on the video itself, but I *love* what they did with 16's peptalk to Gohan, turning it from a plea into a *savage* breakdown and beratement of Gohan, breaking down why he's in the wrong for refusing to fight, and putting the blame on *him* for having the power to end the threat (and Gohan KNOWS it), but refusing to act. Instead of feeling like Gohan's merely honoring 16's last request, Abridged 16 opens Gohan's eyes, and makes him realize *why* he needs to fight, makes him realize that he is, in fact, a worse person for having the power to do good, but selfishly refusing to use it.

Another bit that's probably meant to be funnier than I take it is when, I believe Piccolo, says to Vegeta that they're going to bring back his "baby boy", and then flies off, leaving Vegeta to quietly mumble, "You fuckin' better." Like,, it's such a Vegeta moment with his petty bitterness, but something about that line always gets me -- there's no hint of comedy in his voice, there's no BGM, it's just Vegeta, in his Vegeta way, asserting that he better see his son alive and well on that lookout ;-;

“Sometimes its a Bojack” ...perfect analogy of creative process with how that went
@zxtreme314 жыл бұрын
Listening to them explain how they look to how a character would react to situations in season 3, I think I’m understanding a bit more why they’re not doing season 4. Aside from the fact that it was longer and not as good as cell saga, there really isn’t much opportunity for them to add anything positive to the characters and the story. Adult gohan (always found that name weird, he’s still a teenager here) is a much different character than 11 year old gohan. And for much of the season he’s away from the rest of the cast interacting mostly with video and gohan early on, then briefly reuniting with goku and vegeta before being separated again to a sub arc with the Kais. So they gotta center the series around essentially a new character who will mostly interact with 4 new characters just for it not to pay off with the story ending primarily with goku and vegeta. Then there’s writing a villain who will have 3 major character changes and figuring out how much to keep or buu’s characters and how much to change. And problem there is fat buu is like satan, he’s so over the top weird it’s hard to change much. Evil buu might have some potential but kid buu is just chaos, nothing there to add unless they go really weird. Then they have to figure out how much to keep or deviate of new characters videl, kid trunks, goten, kai, kibito and old kai, there’s characters are pretty bland and old kai is essentially a kai version of roshi, which I’m pretty sure goku actually referenced in the series. On top of that, fan favorites like vegeta are absent for much of the story, goku goes in and out, krill is barely a factor. So when you’re writing something that’s character based and much of those characters are written off, and the new characters don’t have satisfying payoffs I can see why the task would cause burnout.
@WallerSon4 жыл бұрын
You know, I whole heartedly agree with everything you said. I can't imagine the amount of work and planning it would take to even begin charting a course through the yarnball that is the Buu Saga, but if anyone could ever restructure the arc into a meaningful and memorable experience... it's TFS. I will never not wonder what it could have been.
@zxtreme314 жыл бұрын
Walker Gates oh definitely. The impression I have isn’t that they can’t. I don’t think season 4 is the same problem as the bojack movie. The issue is that DBZA was a labor of love, and the love for season 4 just isn’t there. And if there isn’t a compelling reason for a creative to be invested it’s very difficult to make something good, especially since episode 60 was such a high note. They’re not going to surpass it and a big reason is that the original DBZ buu saga never reached the heights of cell saga from emotional pov. DBZ buu arc basically did one thing very well: introducing unique abilities and added some more world building. The addition of the kais, the saga with buu, bibidi and babidy, the introduction of Potara and dance fusion, buu’s absorption ability, the super ghost attack, SS3 all were great additions to the lore. But they sacrificed so much heart by throwing so much new shit at us after a really slow plodding and boring first half of the arc. The new characters introduced are not deep, interesting or fleshed out (and I count adult gohan as a new character) . The saving graces of buu arc from character POV is vegetas character development and ....I can’t believe I’m saying this....Satan’s character development. And I don’t feel like there’s much TFS could’ve done differently with those two. And I don’t think there’s a backstory they could’ve filled to make one of the other characters more endearing like they did with 16
@zeallust85424 жыл бұрын
Im happy with the cell saga being the end tbh, they did all the best dragon ball z sagas and did them justice.
@TwilightFlower94 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Buu Saga Gohan is a completely different character from Saiyan/Freeza/Cell Saga Gohan since he's been changed by the wonder that is actual participation in society. There are a few jokes I'm sad we'll never see (possibly a Super Saiyan speech from Majin Vegeta, Dende hating Videl because he's gay for Gohan, "even you, best buddy...", Super Dee Duper Saiyan (possibly a joke about how it looks like Raditz and is about as useful as Raditz unless your name is Gotenks), and probably something about how Gohan doesn't DOOOOOOOOOOOODGE those guys at the tournament or the Buu goo). The problem is that most characters in the Buu saga are either serious types (the Supreme Kai, Kibito), out of commission/not relevant for most of the saga (Goku, Vegeta, Krillin), or have the Mr. Satan problem of being already so ridiculous they're hard to parody (Gotenks, Fat Buu, Gotenks, Gohan's saiyaman persona, and did I mention Gotenks?)

Thanks for taking the time to make this documentary. This show means a lot to me. It's not just a good parady. It's a good show in its own right. And I really appreciate that little moment with 16 at the end. Him getting his happy ending. I guess he kind of reminds me of my older brother, and DBZ meant so much to us growing up. We both really liked the character. Thanks guys

@reyonXIII4 жыл бұрын
And with all of the problems they faced? This was a great high note to end on. We can still think the Buu Saga happened, but that's not a story they are meant to tell, nor do they have the time, creative energy, or space to try to salvage it when most of their jokes and payoffs have already happened in the Cell Saga, and I think they kinda knew that writing those, just in case. Many shows that linger dip and end on a lesser note, so, shame as it is, I'm glad they're not forcing themselves to do Bojack OR the Buu Saga. Rather, I'm glad they're taking what they're legitimately good at, and doing something much more worthy of appreciation: the often unexplored time between the Sagas. Snippets of life in between them, born (literally in Goten's case), from plots and jokes built up. Not to drag them further, but to explore them. And that's an amazing prospect.
@Zeromaru424 жыл бұрын
Personally if they did do the Buu saga I'd rather them just do cliff notes and go straight into Super. I feel like Super works best with their style and Super Goku and Vegeta really feel like their Abridged Counterparts same with Trunks. I feel that Super definitely took some inspiration, and even though it's more tame than Z I like it more than GT. It just has that same charm to me. They literally could skip the Buu Saga and just go straight into Super. I really like the idea of Black's Goku side making him stupider. It would explain why he all of a sudden forgets to kill everyone. Then he proceeds to get his ass handed to him by Vegeta.
@Martial_Autist4 жыл бұрын
@Tony Lamontw Actually they said in an interview that they just didn't know how to continue. Nothing they wrote felt right to them, and the last thing they wanted to do was 'final season of scrubs' it. They thought it better to end on the high note that was the cell saga.

@@alecazam6755 So in Something Witty Entertainment's SAO Abridged they strip away the generic isekai protagonist parts of Kirito and Asuna, twisting them into actually interesting characters. Abridged Kirito is a socially inept teen suddenly thrust into a position where he's monstrously powerful compared to his peers. He lords it over them because that's what he thinks he needs to do to be cool. SAO Abridged transforms his arc into a cohesive journey from irredeemable asshat to an asshat who cares just enough to challenge the final boss and save everybody. In the beginning he would have done it to sate his own ego. The "I love you" scene takes place at the very end of the SAO arc, where Aincrad is falling to pieces. Kirito and Asuna don't know what's going to happen next. Once they're back in the real world everything will change. Kirito breaks down, bawling and tells Asuna he loves her. It's a raw, heart wrenching scene and serves as the emotional capstone of the season.

In regards to the more emotional scenes and the way they re-did them, I have to sing my praises for the way they wrote and directed the voice acting for Vegeta seeing Trunks die. Lani, if you ever see this, the delivery on "My baby boy!" and "Vegeta, yes!" give me goosebumps every time I re-watch that episode. So much more memorable than Chris Sabat (no matter how much I may adore him and his Vegeta voice that I definitely didn't spend my teenage years trying to perfect) just going "Ceeeellllll" as he flies forward. I'll probably be re-watching the series and quoting Nappa well into my thirties.

my favorite part in DBZA cell saga (and DBZA overall) is the change the made for the androids summarized best in 2 different moments that someone tells the androids they making a bad choice, and then each in his/her own turn replies, "yes, but it's mine to make" very deep and very philosophical as in "what does having 'free choice' means". my favorite comedic moment in this saga is Vegeta vs Semi-Perfect cell (including the Vegeta vs Trunks part) and everything Vegeta in the Broly movie (yeah, Vegeta was just killing it in this saga) most badass moments are the epic Kikoho and far far away down in 2nd place is Trunks vs the androids in the Epilogue

I like the Android 16 video scene with the son, because it being found on 16 or from the lab (can't remember which) adds more depth to Gero as well as how it's heartfelt, as it indicates Gero received the message, strengthens his hatred for Goku, and in a way more importantly, why 16 as a project was a failure. Gero wanted to have his now dead son back, at any cost, and without dragon balls his only way was building a robot, when making 16 he did it with his son in mind more than his usual agenda, leading to the relatively peaceful Android we know. Part of me thinks it could be because he couldn't bring himself to program his son to kill without remorse, and he kept it to keep his son around as opposed to scrapping it as a failure.
