I never actually heard the myth of it being planned to end at Cell until the 2000s. Before that, the common conception was that it was planned to end at Freeza, with Goku's fate being left unknown. All untrue, of course. Kanzenshuu has a great article on all of the supposed theories. The real answer is Toriyama wanted to stop pretty much his entire career, and even thought about the first DB chapter being a one off, or similar to Dragon Boy. Circumstances resulted in it just going on, forever.

I loved the Cell Saga. Nearly everyone had a level of importance. Piccolo got a power up and had some shine, Tien had a badass moment, Vegeta was a TOTAL badass all the way throughout the arc and helped defeat Cell, Goku had one of his most heroic moments, Krillin and Yamcha even tried to contribute, Trunks had several great moments, and Gohan was the MVP of this arc as we all know. Not to mention that this arc has some of the most memorable moments in the series, with Gohan going SSJ2, Vegeta going off on Cell after he kills Trunks, Goku sacrificing himself, Final Flash, Father Son Kamehameha, etc. I can't think of another arc that gives about all of the characters shine or produces as many memorable moments like this one did.

It is my favorite arc of DBZ, because it had the perfect balance of focusing on Goku, Gohan and the Z-fighters. Presenting a future with Goku's death/ the destruction of the world was brilliant and very Terminator like. Equally, impressive was Toriyama's willingness to take Goku out of the picture and allow other characters to shine. Something that the Buu Saga and the subsequent material has missed, even with the recent tournament arc. Plus, Toriyama had the guts to give Gohan the spotlight, a character well foreshadowed and a truly compelling character arc. Literally, if Toriyama wanted to end DBZ at the Cell games Saga; I would have had no gripes. I consider it some of Toriyama's best writing and to me is the perfect bookend. And then the Buu Saga and Super had to muck it up.

Also Tien character developed greatly pushing through the Human barrier and saved the day (for a moment) by holding back a semi perfect cell. Piccollo ended his character arc with coming to the end of all evil in his heart completely when he and Kami returned as one into the Namek whos long forgotten its name. Krillian found love and set aside his beliefs to save 18. Dende was retrieved to return to the story who became the guardian of earth after kami's return. Mr.Satan became one of the only non ki-using humans to ever assist the Z-Fighters.

If Dragon Ball ended with the Cell Saga I would have been satisfied but because the Buu Saga existed I can't and don't want to imagine the series without it. Yeah it had flaws, maybe more than any other Saga but it introduced and added things to the DB universe that I can't imagine the series without. Such as fusion in the form of Gotenks and Vegito, Ultimate Gohan, SS3, Spirit Bomb actually killing someone, Vegita's redemption and Hercule and Buu's friendship. The latter especially if the series ended at the Cell Saga I would not feel what I feel for Vegeta and Hercule like I do now. The Buu Saga is what made me love their characters if the series ended at Cell I would probably despise them to this day.

I agree. Buu saga bored me as a kid a bit, but upon rewatch as an adult I realize they really gave a chance for Vegeta to shine and develop; gave us some of the most iconic moments in DB history: fusion and SSJ3; and developed even Hercule, who became a hero in his own right! We saw Gohan continue to fight not because he was a fighter but because he fought to defend; we saw him end up as a scholar as he was destined to and end up with his own family. Buu Saga wasn't perfect as you said but very necessary, and it wouldn't be the same without it. Cell was my favorite but Buu was a great arc to end on.

I have nothing against the other sagas after it, but Cell saga was a really good point to end it all. Nothing after the cell saga was really important, just another villains and random transformations, completely unnecessary if you ask me, entertaining but unnecessary.

The Cell Saga is the perfect ending and ill tell you why. Throughout the course of dbz it was always hinted that Gohan had hidden power and the most potential. He always managed to keep up with the other fighters and it showed when he surpassed everyone to defeat cell. Cell was so pivotal that even piccolo fused with the Guardian (Kami) of the earth to try to stop him. So many key components to make this arc complete, all we have known from dragonball and kami, was used in this arc. Cell is the perfect Villain who is composed of all the Z fighters cells, having all their skill sets.. You have to remember that Cell is a creation from Dr. Gero, the mastermind of the "Red Ribbon Army", the same group who hated Goku and tried to destroy him when he was a child. Its only fitting that they are back to disrupt the worlds peace because of Goku and have his son finished what goku started. When Goku's hand is placed on Cell before he self destructs, he tells Gohan, the same boy who has been there since the beginning that he is proud of him, and to take care of the planet, and his mother. When the planet was in jeopardy Goku had one last courageous act, and used instant transmission for the earth. During the Kamehameha clash, the Z fighters knowing they couldnt defeat cell, all assisted Gohan, the kid who they have always stood up for his entire life. They all gave a speech, some saying sorry to Goku for not being strong enough, helpless, and with his immense energy cell blew them all into the wind. Vegata who use to be the main antagonist, helped Gohan, the son of someone he could not surpass, his biggest rival, by using all the energy he had left to distract cell, He managed to give Gohan one final chance to release all that hidden power he was known to have, and he showed it in the best way possible. Cell the perfect being that was destroyed is the key moment of the passing of the torch from Goku to his son. Shortly after they gathered the dragonballs and they wanted to use them to resurrect Goku, but Goku declined and said that Gohan was strong enough to take care of the world, and trusted him to be the Earths Hero. Would have been the perfect ending to the arch, the little kid with the four star dragonball on his head to be the new defender of the Universe and continue the legacy of the Beloved Goku

I always assumed that the Freeza arc was the natural "end" of Dragonball. It was the last arc where Gokus human friends had any impact at all, and by the end Goku became the most powerful being in existence, defeating the emperor of the Universe. The Cell and Buu arcs feel a lot more tacked on. Cell and Buu don't even have any kind of motivation beyond "destroying stuff"

To me not every character arc is perfectly wrapped up at the end of the Cell Saga. First of all if Dragon Ball did end at the Cell Saga, we never would've known if Krillin ended up with Android 18 or not. And throughout Krillin's arc one of the biggest things he's always wanted was to find a girlfriend (Marron does not count she was a filler character). The Buu arc showed us that Krilln is now happily married and has also started a family, so to me that was necessary. Mr. Satan also goes through a character arc as he develops a friendship with Buu and also starts to feel guilty for telling lies and having his fame and glory get to his head. Plus he also manages to earn respect from the Z Fighters by helping out with the defeat of Kid Buu. But most importantly there is Vegeta's development, he does not officially become a good guy until the very end of the Buu Saga. Plus at the end of the Cell Saga he's still not completely over the fact that Goku is better than him. For it to end at the Cell Saga is not a good way to wrap up his arc.

The Swegster I also would have loved for cell to be in the tournament, I mean it makes sense since his motivation is to flex his muscles and show off his power, but of course they just had to put in the whole frost Frieza thing though. Cell is also still a biological organism so he is able to power up through training. The power sap and absorption was only a faster way to get power. If Frieza was born with a power level that he showed against ssj goku on namek, and got as strong as a ssblue in 4 months with training, just imagine what cell who started off with a power close to Dr gero or super vegeta, could do if he trained for 4 months. Guy had the potential for it as well as zenkai to help him out. He might have even gotten a new form since we know a zenkai booted him from semi perfect cell to super perfect cell. The Buu ark is my favorite DB ark. Great fights transformations, fusion, Vegeta's character ark, unique villain, message of unity(spirit bomb), Majin Buu and Hurcule's bond, Dabura, Supreme Ki was cool(underrated), Z-sword, and Kibito Ki was really cool too.

Nope. Fuji TV looks primarily at domestic ratings i.e. those from Japan. It's because the subbed versions for Z and Kai are seemingly similar. It's only Funimation that decided (probably forced) to drastically change certain elements of Z, and that's why they readily produced the Kai dub in the first place.

Geekdom youre one of my fav db youtubers. But you failed to mention the character arc of piccolo closing with the fusion of kami, prob more important than trunks as he's gohans mentor and a classic character. Like most db fans you're a saiyan fan which is fine but there are many who enjoy nonsaiyan characters and would like these vids to be more all encompassing. Just some light feedback. Thx!

I'm pretty sure in interviews about creative direction it was the studio that pressed Akira to make more however they let him have full creative reigns to do with the story whatever he wanted. It would make more sense that Cell was the end but because DBZ was a cash cow they just let Akira continue printing money. So overall I would say Geekdom isn't covering the depths to this story that would give the full view. Its painted in a sided bias. FAKE NEWS!
