With the US, they dubbed DBZ before DB so alot of people in the west did not have that same impact of Goku dying. It wasn't until they finished dubbing DBZ where they finally starting DB but by then people did not care to watch it as they thought it was a prequel series. That's why to this day, the western fanbase is not only filled with alot of fans who only saw the inaccurate Z dub but filled with people who just never watched DB.

Not western; Americans. Here in Europe we all watched DB first and then Z.

In Europe, we watched DB in the 80s and then DBZ. It was popular in France, Spain, Italy.... It's only the US and english speaking countries which have this problems.

Some extra trivia; the chapter with Goku in the afterlife is 1 of only 2 chapters in the whole series to be drawn in full colour for the original release. I guess Toriyama felt the afterlife should be as full of life as possible. The only other chapter to be in full colour was the first chapter of the Dr Slump crossover in the Red Ribbon Army arc.

In the manga version, Kuririn doesn't put too much "gravitas" when Gokû dies, because he knows he will return thanks to Shenron, but I still prefer his reaction in the anime because he could seem to be heartless to the audience. Here he even tells Gokû he will survive and tells him to not give up. That is a nice and heartwarming addition for the anime I think !

In the US dbz didn't get introduced till when Goku was in Dbz not DragonBall so that's why everyone including me thought it was a prequel. US just advertised it weird. It was around 1996 when dbz first took the screen but it had a different dub known as the ocean dub. 2000 was the height of its popularity then by 2003 or 4 is when they decided to dub the original db with the fumitation voices that were in the middle and later half of Z. Very minor spoiler Toriyama also forgets about Launch.

Season 1 of OG DB came out in 1995 I think. I guess it wasn't liked enough, so they abandoned it and moved on to dubbing DBZ the next year. They even dubbed a couple DB episodes back in 1990. Which I'm curious what that is like.

In the last arc Goku proved himself the strongest man in the world and even surpassed God. Just when you think the characters can't get any stronger there's a new villain that the team up of Goku and Piccolo couldn't defeat without Gohan's help. And to find out that there are 2 more Saiyans who are even more powerful on their way is a really great set up for this story arc. I really enjoy the pairing of Piccolo and Gohan. Toriyama always impresses me as he always seems to know which characters to put together to get the best out of both. Just a few examples; Goku and Bulma, Muten Roshi and Tenshinhan, Goku and Yajirobe, etc. I find it funny how Chiba Shigeru voices Pilaf, the first major villain of the Dragon Ball anime and then Radiz, the first major villain of the Dragon Ball Z anime.

6:10 you guess it right 😂. Me and my brother use to do a lot when we were kids. I was always Goku and my brother was either gohan or Vegeta because I love DBZ more than him 😂😂😂😂. Snake way in japanese is 1 million km, in the english dub its 10 000 miles.... 1 million km is much more ``realistic`` cause 10 000 miles is nothing. I ran 5000 miles in a year... if it was only 10 000 miles goku would have ran it real fast.
