I have to say, I went in these games expecting some boring outdated games but I'm surprised how hard it is to put them down. I quickly breezed through the first game and I'm loving the open world nature of the second game. I also loathed the enemy art at first but now I love it, it really grows on you.

Though I usually buy physical whenever possible, I am going to buy these digital today on the North American eShop for three reasons: 1. To do my small bit to encourage more English ports of classic RPGs to Switch in the west. 2. Because Dragon Quest games are so great in small-to-medium doses played out over weeks or months, it will be fantastic to always have these games available on my Switch, without lugging a game cart everywhere. Maybe I'll finish all three of them again over the next couple of years... 3. $24 instead of $40 plus international shipping. Of course, I'll probably double-dip and buy physical if that Asian cart ever goes on sale!

the great thing about the Switch edition of these games script wise is that the original old English is intact while prior ports are lacking it.

I like the new enemy designs and I LOVE that it's in widescreen. I had DQ2 on NES when I was a kid, but the cartridge was busted and couldn't save. I'm really excited about this release.

I played these games on the NES and the remakes on the android. Back then grinding was spending hours leveling up. The remakes just required not running from battles and playing normally. That is less painful. Dq 3 for the android has monster animations, which was a great touch as well

Very helpful review as always, Jordan, thanks a lot for this! Just like you, I'm a FF guy and had no nostalgia at all for DQ, but a few years ago I beat DQ1 via NES emulator and loved it! It's a very tight and charming game, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I always wanted to give II and III a try, but lacked the motivation to emulate them on my PC (I work on my PC, so I don't exactly enjoy playing on it). Well, now they're here in not-so-good ports, but playing them on my Switch is the motivation I needed. I'll grab them. PS: Also not a fan of Sugiyama. I played the DQXI demo recently and liked it a lot, but honestly, the music was driving me crazy...

I wanted to play from 1 up, these were the last ones I was missing. I was playing 7 for my first Dragon quest and I think I stop half way through. Finished Both Dragon quest builder games and wanted Heros 1,2 to come out in English on Switch so I could pick that up as well.

The background graphics in this port are all the same as the SNES remake of DQ3, which in turn was made using the DQ6 engine, also for SNES. So honestly, for 1 and 2, I prefer this style over all the other versions. For DQ3, however, the SNES version is just better, period. I believe this version is missing a short intro in the beginning of the game. Other than that though, DQ3 on Switch is still a good port of what is in my opinion the best RPG on the Super Nintendo. Which is my subjective opinion, of course, but all I'm saying is.. It's good. Really good. lol

@@SwitchWatch No, the SNES version of the game has a short intro that shows Ortega fighting a monster on a volcano and then falling into it. This is told to you through dialogue but it would've been nice to have the scene there anyway.

3 got butchered from the SFC the Sprite art was really good and aged pretty well, and this version lost the full screen battles and actual Sprite animations....

I think many fans would agree with you on the music thing, some even want them to get a new composer. The problem is that Sugiyama is too tied to the series and sense he owns the music there is very little they can do about it.

I became an Dragon Quest fan thanks to 8 & 11. So I decided to give the first 3 games an shot since they were the grandfather's of RPG games and how influential and important these games are. Now for 1 & 2, there fine. But they are pretty dated and has many archaic formulaic that didn't hold up as well. It's still replayable. Just not all that much. Now 3 on the other hand, that game is so good and it surprisingly holds up remarkably well. Not only it improved on alot from the first two games, but they added stuff like job systems, more opened & varied worlds, day & night cycle and many more that works well and help stabilize in later RPG games that was inspired from. These collection are cool. Wish they would've gotten more content, smooth animation and stuff that was left out from the Super Famicom or Game Boy Color version. But I digress. So to summarize. 1 & 2 are fine. But 3 is great and one of the finest titles for the series. But these collection are still worth to check out.

I decided to play DQ1 on switch for the heck of it, expecting it to be a bit dull, but still enjoyable, like Final Fantasy 1 was. What I got instead was something I actively enjoyed playing, even if it was barebones. Grinding actually felt rewarding, with the huge jumps in strength. Each level legit counted. Now, Im playing through 2 and it feels like DQ1 but even better! These games are worth it

in one hand yeah can be a little griding but at the same time you have items and magic in dq i-ii for lowering the rate encounter and also in dq iii the thief class have a magic that low the encounter rate ( also no mp cost for that ) also once you realize that there is a buff and debuff magic, things are very easy specially in the mid and end game in dq ii-iii but i think the ONE to have that grind moment is the DQ II for the " revive " magic from the green prince instead for the purple girl that is indeed one of the first heal class arqueotype, but only for the final boss seccion but i also glad that when i played the snes *ahem* rom, you have to defeat 3 ( or 4 ? ) bosses and later you have the main villain and the final boss but you can exit the tower and save and re-enter again and run to finish the game overall gud vidio for anyone how have interesting for look at the real past of the genre but is quite sad that dq iii doesnt have any animation bc that really how dq iii is remember i guess and not without any animation but at least have full orquestal music

I'm becoming an Dragon Quest fan right now thanks to 8 & 11. As someone who has never played these games before & wanted to, is it really worth playing these versions of these games? I know some people don't like this mobile service liked version & personally; I don't blame them. I mean; looked at what happened with the port of Final Fantasy 5 & 6 on mobile device. But even so, are these still worthy of games that are exactly the same as the other versions; even with some contents being cut down from the better versions liked the Game Boy Colored ones?

I just received my copy from PlayAsia and am having fun. I wish that would have used the Super Famicom version instead of the Android ports. One thing that bothers me is that the game stutters.

I might get the physical release thanks to your review. I'm not crazy about the character sprites. I love the look of the backgrounds, very SNES or PS1 appearance, but then the characters themselves don't have the pixel look and it just doesn't match up. Oh well.. can't expect perfection from Square anymore...

I like to consider DQ3 as 2 games in 1: one for the male protagonist, and the other for the female. The differences are minimal, sure, but given the fact the choice is goven at the beginning it's cool you can choose the version of the game you prefer to play.

Still undecided on whether or not to get these. If I do, I’d want to get the physical pack, but it’s not cheap, and I have pretty much zero experience with the franchise. I’ll probably end up getting it as a way to play the beginning of the series, although I doubt I’ll find time for quite a while, I’ve got so many games in my backlog already.

The fact of the matter is, that this is the BEST version we currently have in the west of the trilogy. Is either this or the mobile ports. They are very good. The only thing missing from the mobile versions and the switch version are the battle animations of DQ III.

SwitchWatch There is really nothing else. This or mobile. Full screen, nice images and controller vs portrait mode, normal images and touch screen control.

Nobuo Uematsu would disagree with your praise of him over Koichi Sugiyama. Uematsu calls Sugiyama the "big boss" of video game music. The only terrible musical track in Dragon Quest 11 is the boss theme and that forgettable Tower of Time theme. The rest of the original music in the game along with the cameo tracks are gold.

You can import and you don't need to do anything. If your Switch console is set to English, the game will automatically be in English.

@@SwitchWatch did you play it on a TV or in handheld mode? I haven't tried handheld mode, but on both of my 2 65" TVs the scrolling is jerky af. Many many others are having the same problem. Wonder what is making this happen for some and not others.
