It's safe to say that the JRPG genre would not exist without Dragon Quest. The quest system, turn based combat, level grinding, it's all owed to the herald of it's time. If you don't know this game you know of it's art. It was the first video game Akira Toriyama worked on, and the big stand out here are the monsters. Each design has character to it and are all so unique. A tradition that has carried even to the latest iteration in it's three decade run; Dragon Quest XI. But it's not just the art and Dragon Ball vibes that make it stand out (they both have dragons, they both have balls). The music is spectacular and blew the world wide open for video game music. It's another great classic addition to the Nintendo Switch.

@@zmx132457 bad ending is saying yes to joining the dragon lord and ruling half the world with him, in dq1 screen fades to black and that's it. Builders 1 takes place I think like a century or so later. The dragon lord has stripped the power of Creation from the populace meaning they can't make medicine, weapons, armor, buildings etc. Even if they know how they are literally incapable. MC of the game is the legendary Builder, woken up by the goddess to go out to give them building power back and repair what's fallen apart one town at a time. I figured I’d try out Dragon Quest 11S to try this series out. The Demo was lengthy, the world and character design super charming, and the combat is immediately simple, but I’m now 70+ hours deep, playing the post-game, the combat is SUPER fun and this might be my favourite RPG on the Switch. What an amazing game, consider me a fan. Also I’m a huge fan of the visual style because I love DragonBall, Is this series just perfect for me but somehow been going under the radar?! Thank you Alex and Jirard for getting me into this series!

I'm glad you enjoy it! I'd recommend III, IV, V, VI, and VIII as the best games in the series that you should prioritize next. Ideally you should play a translated Super Famicom version of III, rather than the butchered, overpriced Switch port. I prefer the SNES versions of V and VI, but if you can get over the low quality DS sound chip and dual screen design, then that version is much easier to play in the west.

I played through DQXI the first time in 2D, now I'm going through the 3D mode. I've invested over 180 hours so far and it's still an exciting game to play. @Jordan3DS
@Jordan3DS 4 жыл бұрын
@@DeltathRiylaan I enjoyed VII (I played the PS1 version), but it's just too damn long for its own good. It has 2 or 3 Dragon Quest games shoved into one package, and while I enjoy the cities and their stories, it's too much. It's also somehow the most grindy Dragon Quest game, requiring MUCH more EXP to get a level than any of the other games. The party members are good, but it's one of the weaker casts in the series in my opinion. Still a good game, but I just don't think it's very beginner friendly, and should probably be one of the last main series Dragon Quest games that someone plays. I agree, though, people should end up playing all of the games eventually, I was just saying some good ones to start with!

My favorite part about the Dragon Quest Erdrick Trilogy, as both a massive fanboy and someone into game design, is how you can see it works to ease players into the concept of RPGs better than FF:MQ or even Pokemon attempted to. The games have such a clear sense of progression from area to area and game to game in terms of equipment, enemy progression (the classic "bridge = difficulty spike" the series is known for), dungeons, combat, party mechanics, etc. It's a series meant to ease unfamiliar console gamers into the core gameplay of CRPGs, while at the same time not coddling the player in the same manner as Pokemon, Mythic Quest, or similar games. It makes the games a great experience even to this day.

@@blazesalamancer8767 I've always wanted to get into game design tbh, but I'm a business major and I don't know shit about programming. More of a Jobs than Wozniak. But yeah, it's one of those games from an era where you couldn't spam tutorials and had to assume the player had no experience, ergo human factors play a huge role in its design. While I'm not the biggest fan of constant nostalgiabaiting in video games (indies in particular as of late) the best place to look for how to design a game is the classics of the arcade and pre-32bit era, purely because the limited means of conveyance usually required intuitive design. Nobody bothered to read the manual and the target audience was kids and teens with a low attention span, so they had to make games with a relatively low initial learning curve that got more complex as you explored them. I'm not the biggest fan of Turn-Based JRPGs but I love DQ, and as a fan of D&D and other RPGs I admire the way it manages to guide the player with out feeling like it's hand-holding. And the evolution of the series throughout the Erdrick Trilogy is particularly fascinating.

I played this game last year over the summer break. I didn't use maps or anything, I charted them myself. This game is difficult in the right places, feels fair and yet is also consistently challenging. Finding Erdrick's Armor using the love item as a guide or traveling between towns trying to gain clues as to what was next felt like an actual adventure. I know it was probably to length-pad, but the open-endedness of it all and lack of a guide makes it really feel like nothing else today, except for other old cRPGs in its ilk (or Ultima's).

Even though I only started really playing dragon quest in 2015 it's become a series close to my heart. DQXI has made me tear up more than any other games I've played. Glad to see you finally giving the first one an episode on the show. I also am very salty about the piss poor port...it deserves so much more...

I love 8, but I REALLY don't think it's as good as most westerners seem to. Maybe it's because I got into the series way later. It's a great game for sure (it's a dragon quest game so obviously), but I don't think it's the Holy Grail of the franchise. I don't even know if it has one tbh. I like every single one for a myriad of different reasons, so it's hard for me to rank one over the other. If I had to I'd probably say it's DQIII, just because of how important it is to the franchise and how it holds up to this day.

By the way, with the Switch version's autosave feature, you don't HAVE to start over back at Tantegel if you die. Just reset the game and start the autosave file and you'll be taken back to the last successful battle you completed. Makes level grinding way less risky.

So my dragon quest story is different. I grew up playing it. No one knew what it was and it became one more thing i loved that no one knew about. I had the gbc remakes of 1-3 and 8. When 8 came out people finally knew what it was and I could talk about it at last.

The DQ franchise can certainly be slow at times, especially the original NES version, but this game still holds up fairly well as one of the grandfathers of the genre and the groundwork it created here led to some of the best JRPG’s of the 2000’s. Also, as a DB fanboy till the day I die, I’m always gonna love Toriyama’s art style.

I've already finished all 3 of the switch versions and for anybody that has issues with the graphics and overall visual design I would highly suggest playing them in handheld mode only. They look a lot better on the smaller screen as opposed to being blown up on a big TV. This is the first time I have played any of these games since I originally played them on the NES many years ago and all three come highly recommended from me. The quality of life changes are great and the redone music sounds fantastic.

Dragon Quest *easily* became my favorite game franchise in the span of a week. A friend if mine was playing DQ1 in a group chat and documenting his journey to us and it was incredibly interesting to me. I immediately started playing 4 and loved it to bits, moved on to 5 directly afterwards and omg do I fucking love it. In the middle of 9 rn and it's still going strong even without as compelling of a story as 4 and 5, they're all just solid games that are easily enjoyed by anyone with free time.

Another magical thing about this game that there are no quest markers and almost no cutscenes. This means you have to discover the story and what to do on your own by actually exploring and talking to NPCs. This is way more fun than sitting through hours of the game holding your hand and explaining the obvious (looking at you, modern Pokémon.) Fun fact, if you go back to the destroyed town after defeating the Dragon Lord BEFORE you talk to the king, you can actually speak with the ghost of Galen. it's how you finally help his spirit rest in peace.

It was mid-summer. I went to a game store because I wanted to buy another game to play. I had enough for a 3DS game and a Switch game. The first one I got was The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Beat it a little over two weeks ago. The second I had some trouble deciding. I settled on Link's Awakening, but, at the last minute, I decided on Dragon Quest XI S. Seeing the Hero in Smash gave me enough curiosity to try the series, and I had already played like 70% of the demo. I'm now 50+ hours in, just made it to the Last Bastion. I can definitely see why this series is mainstream in Japan. And so far, this game has me hooked harder than a fish in Twilight Princess while using the sinking lure. The story is really good and has me trembling with anticipation over what's gonna happen next. The gameplay is easy to understand, the difficulty is fair (I even went for the "Hero dies= Game Over" Draconian Setting because I wanted the game to feel more like a JRPG) and warrants proper investment and use of spells. The music is Sonic game levels of orgasmic. And everyone has a charming personality and they all feel different from each other. I can't make a final judgment since I haven't beat the game yet (and it honestly feels like I've barely even made it to the halfway point), but my favorite characters so far have to be Sylvando and Erik.
