This is infact a boss theme for the expansion Dark Arisen. The picture you are seeing is in fact extremely appropriate to the song. It plays during the first phase. Its also basically a mix of the main theme you hear as a motif alot. It is meant to feel somber and sad with the story surrounding it. An ill fated fight.

It fits much better with the surrounding audio from the on-going fight and dialogue, as well as the context knowing the story gives to the lyrics. His comment about it feeling like 'conclusion' is more accurate than he knew at the time of saying it. It's the end of many things, and his comment of 'post-game' isn't really wrong either. Bitterblack Isle (the dark arisen exansion) is very much a post-game area, and the conclusion to it's story is rather bittersweet, much like the main game's story conclusion. It's also, from my own personal experiences, a hell of a high note for the game to 'end' on. I have that in quotation marks because the game is quite old now, yet there is still a lot of mystery in exactly how certain game mechanics interact, with new revelations emerging every now and again, as well as looming hype (and dread tbh) since they finally confirmed an upcoming sequel. We begged for years for a pc port, then begged for even more for a sequel. I pray it isn't an object disappointment, even as I acknowledge it will never hit the lofty expectations the community will have of it.

Yes, by the time you get here you've fought through and understand how this all fits to make it a very appropriate final boss theme.

The first encounter is one of my favorite boss battle of all the times. If you played the original version get up to lv +100 and survive all long into the deep makes that battle so memorable. I feel right into ❤ when he says "this is the end of your journey" I was like f !!! Dude

It's a song about the final boss and his relation to everything, the dragon, the pawns, the endless cycle of worlds (the coils of light), and what he truly wanted. I really can't blame you for not instantly feeling a connection to the song, because it lacks all the context without already being familiar with the world of the game to understand all the uh... tragedy.

It's a very sad song, if you understand the lore it draws from. It's about love and death and despair, and the fated cycle the world and all souls are stuck in and the misery it brings.

Would love to see you react to Into Free! It's the title screen music for the original release of DD and is an English cover by very famous rock duo B'z of one of their older singles.

Into Free is DMCA hell is the problem. It's the entire reason it was removed from Dark Arisen in the first place. Capcom lost the rights to continue using it because they only paid to use it for a single release. Dark Arisen was an enhanced version of the original game and was not a DLC you could just download. You had to rebuy the entire game to play it, thus it counted as a new release so to use the song again they would have had to pay again.

Is not the same without getting insta killed by a three ton sweeping roundhouse kick or you insta killing Daimon. Still, he's one of my favorite boss fights ever.

I know plenty of people already pointed out this song is basically the boss contemplating his story, but something interesting is how it relates to the main theme "Eternal Return". Eternal Return is a song about the player and his journey, concluding in you "now seeing the Dragon's Dogma" once the character discovers the truth of the world and breaks an eternal cycle. 'Coils of Light' is supposed to be sung by the boss, Daimon, who was a hero that went through the same journey as you. This is represented by the lyrics of Coils of Light shifting into the final part of Eternal Return, the main theme, but instead of surprise and triumph singing how *"now"* you see the truth, Coils of Light instead tells us *"how"* Daimon has seen the truth, the dragon's dogma, a reference to how many chosen heroes like you he has bested before and how affected by the truth he was once he faced the dragon's dogma himself and became a monster as a result of his actions. The lyrics of Eternal Return then cease and the original lyrics of Coils of Light return to end the song, maybe indicating how he never actually finished the cycle and is now suffering for the loss of his mother and of his lover forever, unless you best him and put his soul to rest with his family.

This song plays to my favorite boss fight in all of video games. Daimon is one of the best rewards after a slog of a dungeon. This song is a fantastic conclusion to his story and the story of dragons dogma. I also got so hype when daimon started doing sweeping kicks

It does. Dark Arisen expects you to have beaten the original game at least twice

That conflicting emotion was very interesting. At this point, you are supposed to be feeling relieved that you're defeating the boss, but at the same time also feeling sad and sympathizing with it.

There's a version with female japanese vocals that sounds moderately different with an extended ending. Some prefer it to the english version.

I’d have to say they went with a childlike singer to symbolize the loss of innocence of the subject of the song as he was a young boy when everything was taken from him and he began his journey of revenge which led to his fall and cursed him to become the demon you see in the art there. In context it’s incredibly poignant. Out of context it’s kinda meh.

Ye the song is good, but listening to coils of light without context is the same as listening to weight of the world without playing NieR: automata, but it hits way harder once you understand the characters its written about

I would highly recommend the Japanese version of this song over the english version, on the surface is just like, the same song but in japanese, but it is better arranged and mixed, vocals have a totally different mood and are stronger overall and it just feels more complete in general, at least in my opinion the japanese version is highly superior despite the surface level being very similar

I also prefer the Japanese version, the singer does an incredible job and the instrumentation has a bigger sound. The lyrics in English are a bit off to me as well. Like you said, it sounds like they put more effort into it. Everyone's got their preference though. Just like how I feel the PSP "upgrade" of the Riviera OST is nowhere near as good as original GBA. Some things just end up lost in translation.

@Maxbeedo2

Decent song, though I did always feel it was a little out of place in the "style" of fight that it's played on. Daimon (the big demon in the picture) has some random lines of dialogue during the fight about the pointlessness of existence, and Olra, his lover when he was human, telepathically adds some lines about redeeming him, so it feels like it should be a very emotional fight... except Dragon's Dogma is a very action-heavy game. Daimon is quite agile despite his size, and if you aren't prepared the fight will be tense and difficult, having to dodge, block, run, etc. in real time, at a much faster pace than the music would suggest (the gameplay is outstanding). It plays again during the credits after the cutscenes after the fight and it works better there.
