You know, when you realize that Androids 19 and 20 WERE going to be the main villains of this saga, and that Androids 16, 17, and 18, were an after thought (so was Cell, and all of his transformations), you start thinking to yourself, "What the fuck was Toriyama thinking?"

Honestly, I have no idea what he was thinking. But I actually do like this change in the formula. Even though it was probably the most confusing, complicated, and convoluted storylines ever, it was one of the more interesting twist Phil segments of Dragon Ball Z. I like how we kept getting bait and switched because time travel Shenanigans changed things. But that's just me.

HORRIOR They weren't technically an after thought, the editors made him do it because old man and fat mime were not popular with the readers. The same happened with Cell, fat lips cell was the original perfect cell but the editors told him he had to make him look more badass. Editors have a huge influence because they work directly under the publisher so they do that kinda shit all the time. Kishimoto wanted to focus on a lot of characters in Naruto but the company sold more with the story being the Naruto and Sasuke show so they grabbed him by the balls, exactly like Dragon Ball that at the beginning all characters were interesting but after the Saiyan saga nobody did shit so it became the Goku and Vegeta show. Try reading the DB manga since chapter 1 and you'll see what I mean.

It was editorial interference his editor didn't think they fit the mold of main villains and I'm quoting him as saying "I thought the baddies had arrived but this is just some old geezer and a fatass" which then prompted Akira Torriyama to make 16 17 and 18 his editor at the time then said "wait so now the baddies are just some snot-nosed punk teenagers" which the prompted cell's design originally the second form was supposed to last longer and impact the story much more than it did but Torriyama's new editor thought the design was stupid so he then asked him to rush him to his perfect form. Yeah I feel the same way. I mean, 19 and 20 were just SO BORING, and they were introduced and encountered so quickly! Were the Z fighters just going fight them for as long as Cell saga ended up continuing? (I doubt it would have been AS long, but still) I mean how many times were Goku and the others supposed to fall for the Energy stealing shtick? Were they going to have some insane built in weapons? Why did androids 20 and 19 supposedly kill Gero? In the end we got some decent characters in 17, 18, and 16, and Cell was an INSANELY interesting villain for the series. If 20 and 19 had stayed around, I'm pretty sure they would have been such a huge anticlimax after Frieza saga.

I agree with you I half expected Vegeta smiling and being happy with the whole thousands of dead puppies line popping underneath because of that. Plus if you think Tien has the best lines, oh my God you ain't seen nothing yet just wait until a certain part comes up later on you'll be impressed. I'm not going to spoil it for you.

So just in case wanted to point out that in the original DBZ Goku never took the medicine because the virus never kicked in until later for some reason. In Trunks timeline Goku died from the virus 6 months prior to the androids attack. Guessing all the extra training may have slowed its progression or something.

It's implied that Trunks changed some events with his time travel, as he later states that 17 and 18 are stronger in the past timeline, as well as never hearing of 16, 19, 20, or Cell.

My guess is in Trunks's timeline Androids 19 and 20 showed up anyway at the right time, and were beaten, and then 17 and 18 showed up. But these are the only ones Trunks remembers cause they were the only ones that survived past him being a baby.
