Think about it this way: If Trunks had travelled up or down he would have gone to another universe within his timeline. But Trunks travelled sideways, as such, he went to another timeline all-together, instead of a different universe within his already destroyed timeline, which seems to be continued in Super.

There are multiple theories on time travel used in fiction (almost every one of which has been used in the Star Trek franchise): - Multiverse theory (being the first one mentioned on this list because it was used in this video): For every event that has more than one exclusive outcome, there is a separate branching timeline for each of those outcomes. Time travel from the future to the past causes a new timeline to branch off at the moment future agents interact with past agents. DOWNSIDE: You can't change the past to make your present better (or worse). - Determinative timeline (aka Predestination theory): Any interaction between the past and future has already contributed to the present/future as you know it. DOWNSIDE: As soon as someone from the future visits your present, you might not technically have free will anymore (if we ever did). - Malleable timeline: If you change the past, it changes the future. DOWNSIDE: If by changing the past you eliminate your motivation to change the past in the first place, you might create a temporal paradox that could damage the space-time continuum (and apparently give Goku an embolism from thinking about it). - VARIATION--Ripple-effect-proof memory: You remember the unaltered timeline even after you alter it. DOWNSIDE: If you remember BOTH timelines, it can be detrimental to your psychological well-being, especially if you decide to time-travel more than once. There was an episode of the 90s version of The Outer Limits that dealt with that, and it was a significant plot element in Bioshock Infinite. All in all, I think it can best be summed up in a quote from Miles O'Brien and Miles O'Brien: "I hate temporal mechanics."

-self repairing timeline: should time travel be invented at any point, time becomes unstable as time travellers will continue to enact changes in the timeline, past and future become uncertain until one such change actually negates the invention of time travel, once this happens the timeline stabilizes the state in which the past is at this point becomes certain until time travel is invented again later, starting the process all over again. imperfections in this process cause weird phenomena, such as doppelgängers, out of place technology being found in archaeological digs as well as the mandelah effect (among other things)

There are actually 4 ways that time travel could work. The first way is as is explained here. You travel to the past and make a change and now you have created a different timeline and cannot technically return to your own without either a tether point that you're locked onto or stopping yourself from making the change by time traveling again. The second way is where you go back in time and make a change and that completely re-writes history, potentially eliminating the very reason you traveled through time in the first place, thus creating what is known as a grandfather paradox. The third way is where you cannot make any changes. If you go back in time, anything you do was already done by the future you the first time around and you actually don't alter anything. This kind of time travel could easily cause a predestination paradox. The fourth way involves time locations such as the past to not actually exist. The universe exists in an ever-changing now and that's all you get. Time travel to the past in this scenario would involve restoring the universe, or at least part of it, to an earlier state. In this case, all time traveling to the past would actually take place in an altered present and nothing that you do could create a paradox. Not even killing your own grandfather before he meets your grandmother. This is the one I believe to be true. Also, they do explain what Trunks' time traveling does. It's probably been explained already so I won't bother with it.

Three main time travel ideas: Weave(Parallel universes), river(Destiny can't be changed unless with a major event that changes all destiny), and branches (where everything get changes at the point of events and you get all the paradox working due to ghost of other time branches that no longer exist).

For story purposes how time travel works is normally selected based on what will not break the plot. For example because future trunk keeps coming back to the past, changing the future doesn't make sense. It would break the plot because if the future changed, then trunks wouldn't come back. If trunk came back once and warned everyone, then never returned. That is when you could get away with changing the future. Or if trunks was always the main character, then changing the future would make more sense. But in general time travel in a non time travel story needs to be lightly used. Or it will break the story quickly.

Multiverse is about multiple realities relative to their timeline. E.g.: The fact you chose upload episode 41 today, deviates from another possible reality in which you chose to do something else, thus creating atleast two realities; One in which you upload this episode at this particular moment, another in which you didn't. Omniverse is about multiple "universes" in one reality and timeline. Prior to space exploration, the earth was our "universe", then the solar system was, then the galaxy was. Albeit an Omniverse may be different in that, unlike planets, stars and galaxies, we are confined to our own universe. We don't know if there are other universes, we can't physically observe, test or confirm it. But we _can_ think about it. On a philosophical note, everything you can think of exists. For if it didn't, you wouldn't be able to think about it. Although there's a fair and fine distinction between what exists as ideas of the mind and what exists in physical reality. Any "idea" may just be the interaction between neurotransmitters in our brains, but we can't deny the physical existence of a planet beneath our feet and the air that keeps us alive.
